Here is the disassembling of the ABUS Tresor Chain Catena Combo 1385 bike combination lock. Taking this lock apart and inspecting the parts show how well thought out the mechanics of this lock is and why it is difficult to decode. Also this shows nicely how a high quality bike combination lock works and how the different features are implemented. Have fun.

Just binge watched all three videos for this lock. Fantastic fun. I cheered when you got it open in part two.

Thanks a lot for the feedback and your endurance in watching all these videos. This lock bothered me for quite a while - glad that I could master it finally.

Shame on me, I threw it away. ;-) I didn't see any chance and I missed the fun about it, but with your videos I might try a few more combination locks. And when it doesn't work out I will send those locks to you. ;-)

Cheers and thanks for watching - with these little tricks this lock has become really hard to open. Every bike lock should be built like this. Thank you very much for your kind words my friend.

It's sad that the false gate is always a set number fron the real gate. Find the pair and you instantly know that the upper number is the true one !

Is there the possibility of pushing onto the red "combination change prongs" while closed so you get the direct feeling of the bars which make sure that you can only change the combination if the correct one is dialled in? Then there would be no false feedback from the other mechanisms because you don't rely on the central bar at all.
@Potti314
@Potti314 4 года назад
I don't think that you can reach to the red prongs as they are protected by a lip from the part with with the bolt.

i have the same lock .ive tried for weeks cannot decode,,,
@RuneInternational
@RuneInternational 6 лет назад
so the space between the true and false gate is the same on all the rings and all the locks
@Potti314
@Potti314 6 лет назад
Yes, there is equal spacing between the bumps which makes it very hard to distinguish.
@RuneInternational
@RuneInternational 6 лет назад
Potti314 If you feel a gate, you can go 4 down, and 4 up, and feel those 2. If up4 also feels like a gate, you were in the true gate. If down4 feels better, it is now the true gate, and the first was the false
@Swynndla

Very nicely explained and very interesting - thank you! I suppose that if there is a 5-wheel one of these locks (and if the chain was much more cut-resistant & if the lock was hammer-resistant), then it would be a very secure lock indeed. Those false & true gates - can they be probed by putting a thin knife / probe between the wheels and turning each wheel to detect the gates & determine which is the correct number?
@Potti314
@Potti314 6 лет назад
I think 4 wheels a sufficient ;-) The option of a brute force attack applies to all type of locks but with this anti-decoding feature a quick attack with the pull-picking method is no longer possible. The outer wheels overlap (see here for one of these wheels ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NqdGfvaud0U.html). So there is no space for a decoding knife.
@Swynndla
@Swynndla 6 лет назад
Ah yes I understand now - thanks. It's a nicely designed lock! Another (beginner) idea - the red dial that can be turned to set a new combination - is that accessible with a knife? (the end does pop out a bit) - so that you can tension *that* to see which wheel binds on that & whether it gives feedback when a gate is reached? Both the false & true gate might give feedback from it, but only if it's accessible by a knife or something thin & flexible? (but I guess it's not accessible).
@Potti314
@Potti314 6 лет назад
No, the part with the bolt is a bit hollow so the red dial is kind of burried in there.
@Swynndla
@Swynndla 6 лет назад
Okay I'm ran out of ideas - it's a well designed lock. Thank you once again for going over this lock in such interesting detail.

Haha, thanks buddy. Usually I makes updates less frequently but this was kind of a follow up and I wanted my viewers to have the decoding still in mind when watching this. By the way, I usually keep all the youtube notifications about new videos in a sub-folder of my email - inbox and just watch the video whenever I like.

Thanks for explaining this! I had no clue! Could you say something about this video where it seems rather easy to decode the lock: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l_vNiRF_rzA.html ? Is the video fake or perhaps it's an older model of the lock, since the video is from 2010?
@Potti314
@Potti314 5 лет назад
I know this video and even had a little chat with the guy. But he didn't reply on my query to take his lock apart to see if it has these anti-pull picking features. I watched that video a couple of times and you can see the wheels stuck at the right number - so I believe it's not fake but more likely not the exact same design. But there is another possibility which needs a bit of explanation. The same type of combination lock can change the picking properties (feedback) due to normal wear by usage and weather or wear by decoding. I've experienced this several times and also heard that from others. This can make the lock more or less difficult. For this particular lock there was a time where I could decode it reliably in about 5 minutes in the hand. But then suddenly it stopped playing nicely and the feedback was gone. So maybe the lock in the other video had a state where decoding was less troublesome and also the tension seemed to be just right. So it might be the same design but due to specific wear a bit easier to decode. Hope this makes sense for you.

before i watched this video i made 2 things - 1. i watched a video "how to open a Abus Tresor" 2. i opened my Abus Tresor within 20Sec. Then i watched this Video and must hear this @ 0:07 - difficult to decode ? "Within 20Sec" said "NO" ...
