I was yelling “nooooo” when you went to touch them with bare hands, not aware of the super annoying hairy prickles! I’m one of those people who grew up with prickly pears, and they’re one of my favourite fruit ever! You can use tongs to harvest them, or a tin can on a stick if they’re high up. To eat them we cut off around 1cm off the top and bottom end and make a horizontal slice along the “cylinder”. Then you can use a knife and fork to peel all the skin off. Enjoy!

Thanks OWL! I've noticed they spread like crazy, so best to keep a watch.

Congratulations on your first harvest! 😊 I have eaten them before, they grow in my hole country. And it’s because of you that I could see for the first time the cactus! Thank you for that! 🙂 I’m impressed that it can grow in your climate!

Thanks! I'm surprised you've never seen the cactus, here in my city it grows wild in parks and rivers. My climate is truly amazing for growing almost every fruit outside of the true tropics. From cherries and kiwi to citrus and cactus and mango and bananas! The winters are too cold for my liking but most people I've talked to don't mind at all.

@@RealLifeFruitopia Maybe I saw the cactus before and didn't have the fruit, so I didn't know! And all that is incredible! what a beautiful place! I'm in Canada, so your winters are just nice! we go into -20/-30 celsius on winter... So, your winter is just the best! lol

@Gonzalo_M Melbourne winters are definitely the best for most people, not hot and not freezing like in Canada. For tropical climate lovers, like us, the winter is too long without heat.

I got some of those the other day from a friend in a bucket. I found if you run them through a gas flame it blunts/burns those little hairy prickles off and makes them alot easier to handle. I think they taste better than the flashier dragon fruits.

Good friend! You haven't had a proper sweet dragon fruit then, one picked ripe and grown in the tropics.

Lol I only ever picked the fruit with my hands once! Think they call the fruit tunas in Mexico

What u do is cut about quarter of an inch from the top and bottom and then run about 1/8 of an inch deep cut with a knife vertically and it should peel off easily

Hi George! Thanks for showing us very interesting fruit of the world! I had never known such a fruit existed. Looks very juicy. How long did it take for your cactus to fruit? BTW What is your cherimoya variety? Good luck with your choko.

You are very welcome. It took around 8 years to set first fruit, mind you I've never watered or fertilized it.

Damn those glochids bug the hell out of my skin, incredibly irritating. I use gloves to handle them and burn the hairs off with a lighter. You can normally get the glochids out of your skin with a strong sellotape
@RealLifeFruitopia
@RealLifeFruitopia 2 месяца назад
I'm more concerned with the long spikes on the pads. The glochids fall off eventually after a hand scrub and shower.

Those hairs are annoying. I've used a torch to burn them off before, or a leather glove to rub them around until they are worn off.

They are especially annoying when filming a how to eat video, otherwise not that bad. I hand peeled the remaining ones just fine.
