You should do a similar video where you pick the top 5 bottles that you could actually buy throughout the country. No store picks, no allocation, and no regional releases. The top 5 bottles you could step off a plane in any random US city and know you can walk into a random liquor store and buy.
@@nickflohr811 They've done something like that but no, limiting it to $50 is not what I'm talking about. There are plenty really avaliable whiskeys over $50 that are very good.
I've been favoring this sort of "collection" for a while now. I used to do the shelf full of bottles thing but I decided I had too much stuff that I didn't like (unfortunately it's not "content" when I do it) so I spent a year or two not buying anything and just killing bottles. I now have a cheap bourbon that I keep a decanter full of on my desk and coffee table, then I keep one nicer bourbon, one rye, one Irish, one peaty scotch, one sherried scotch, and one Japanese whiskey on hand at all time. All of the nicer bottles change frequently, I almost never buy the same one twice in a row.
I'm working to get to this point right now myself, and it's hard... I think I peaked around 50+ bottles ranging the full gamut of price points and styles (mainly bourbon then scotch), slowly trying to work down to a dozen or less. The only bottle I've re-stocked this year, is a handle of EW BiB to replace a WT 101 handle that is mainly used for mixed drinks
@@rhendog7 Yeah, I also consider cocktail spirits to be separate. I do technically have another bourbon, rye, and scotch that I use only for mixing. It's a nice way to do the collecting thing without ending up with bottles they just sit around for a long time because you don't really love them.
I agree with Seans Four Gate Batch 19 but I agree more with Dans choices. Joseph Magnus, Blue Run and Compass Box choices are absolute hitters. The first Compass Box I had was the Peat Monster and Dan is right that it’s like an angel from heaven comes down and just envelopes you in a soft warm embrace that heals your soul and makes everything oh so much better.
I’m with you on the Elmer 100: it started my bourbon journey. I have an ETLC in my bunker because I couldn’t find the 100 anywhere, and Elmer at the slightly higher proof than normal is amazing!
Of my collection in no particular order - antique 107 (boring) - ocean voyage 17 (only one worth the money) - yippee kye yee (spelling) - desert jewell - IW Harper 15
Hey guys, nice job making this particular video - I actually enjoyed the banter. Regarding the lists, I hate to say it, but the difference maker for me is that I'd choose the Compass Box over the Octomore 6 days out of 7. Keep up the good work
Guys I loved this video! There is something about watching people show off their collection/monster bottles that truly get me excited and remind me why I got into bourbon/whiskey in the first place. I felt so giddy haha. Also, the way Dan talked about Peat Monster Arcania was absolutely poetic. Damn near made a believer out of me. Thinking I might have to run down to party source and pick me up a bottle 😇 cheers junkies!
I feel like I have to live vicariously thru you gents cause I won't hunt that hard for those unicorns..... Never seen any of them in the wild in SE NC 😞
surprised shawn didn't go with a brownforman Early Times BiB to take advantage of the magical refill... The WTWT list didn't include refills, which changes everything. With the refill, I'm keeping my GTS, ER17, EHT Marriage, RR13 (so I could finally open them, all bought at retail) and lastly 1792 FP store pick.
Great list, and I was so pleasantly surprised by your Islay picks at the end! I love Compass Box as well, my favorite is their Tobias & The Angel and it would have to be in my list of 5 bottles. Cheers!
Great list guys! Loved this concept of having a whiskey collection but having to pick your favorites to survive. Some would be impossible to find again, some are your favorites flavor profiles, and some are sentimental. Cheers 🍻
I freaking love Four Gate batch 19! Was getting very sad because the bottle is low and randomly walked into a store on vacation and they had batch 19! Bought two more it is fantastic!
Fun list and great choices! I've got seven of those eight bourbons and ryes on the list and also feel that those are some of the best bottles I have. Cheers guys! 🥃
@@betsypwnsyou I ended up having to pay like $350 cad to get it up here. Which is like $265 usd? The selection here is terrible so it's basically all secondary from groups/people. So for that amount of $ in the US you can probably find better things.
oh I'm going looking for the Four Gate Kev Collab IIII NOW. It was a tie for me. Dan and Sean both had 2 I love on their list, and I haven't dabbled in Scotch Whisky so that's a toss up. I'll actually try it now.
That's a large bottle count of I suspect 80% great bourbons. I believe the best 5 whiskies I have owned a bottle of are - Middleton Very Rare 2016, Stagg Jr, EHTBP, Heaven's Door cask strength (MGP), and Redbrest 12 year. Cream of Kentucky 13 year would replace Heaven's Door, but I only had that as a pour at a restaurant. My honorable mentions are Yellow Spot, ECBP, JDSBBP, and John's Lane release. I dig Sean's list over Dan's. Sorry Savant
I’m shocked…I actually have one of the bottles! Got to try the 1910 Extra Old a few times and loved it. Managed to get one in trade for an OWA and EHT Small Batch. I can find those retail from time to time so it was a no brained for me.
You just picked teams in dodgeball and Dickel is the kid with asthma and glasses. Pick by pick as presented in the video, who won? 1. Dan's JMCB 2. Sean's KoK (and not just because that's fun to say. I have a bottle from that literal barrel and its a killer) 3. Sean's Parker's Rye (that rye is so good) 4. tie. wow. 5. have only had octomore of those two so I have no idea.
What the heck! So far nobody has picked Fireball! And God's sake give Dickel some love too! For no. 3 Wicked Pickle. If Dan was able to make a list for Greeze they'd be on that list!
Nice lists! I'll give the edge to Sean because of King of Kentucky. I just had my first taste of it in Kentucky two days ago...Unbelievable!! Unfortunately, I'll never be able to own a bottle (insert frown here).
I’d say it was a tie for me. Even though I’m and thought at first his list would win for me with the four gate pick. with that Kentucky owl Batch 2 Rye and that compass box Peat monster might’ve just edged a little bit ahead. Awesome video
Seem like great lists. Only have had Magnus and a regular Elmer before…but I think I’ll have to go TeamSean on the 5 id like to try more. Also want that whisky shirt
My 5 would be: Aberlour A’Bunadh Redbreast 12 Cask Strength Riverset Rye Cask Strength store pick JD Coy Hill (mine’s 141 proof) Balcones Brimstone They’re all high proof, which I was concerned about at first, but I figured I can add water if I need to. I wanted one of each of my favorite categories. I’ll miss peat tho. If I could add another it would be Laphroaig 10CS, but I’d drink that less than the others.
No Mario sound but I’ll try again tomorrow! Also Dan don’t you have a OF birthday bourbon from the year your son was born? I was just curious because of the sentimental value of sharing that one day where that would rank! Cheers guys
I’m in NC and can never find the 1910. Finally found me a bottle while in Florida and now trying to figure out if I want to open it now or wait til I get another bottle. 🤯🤷♂️
You should do a video where you pretend you’re getting a “divorce” and then do a “draft” of what bottles you would pick to take with you after the separation
This divorce is the equivalent of Sean getting the kids on weekends, holidays, and summer vacation while Dan gets the kids Mon - Thurs and has to go to all the PTA meetings and do all the homework with the kids.
Ugh, I'm never going to remember these bottles to spot them at any liquor store. I mean, not like I actually expect to get lucky and find one, but damn...there are so many I want to try and not readily available.
Hey guys, I live in Australia and would love you're opinion. I've found an online seller for 1792 Full Proof for $149 AUD (103.20 USD). Cheap compared to other sites. I really like Wild Turkey Rare Breed (72.73 USD) but want to try the 1792. Is it worth forking out the extra dollars or just stick with Rare Breed? Thanks, love the channel!
I thought the original premise was more emotional and sentimental, and less about quality or rarity, like with the Elmer bottle. They don't refill and you can rebuild the collection, don't have to 'round out the selection'. Let's say there's a tornado or earthquake (insurance covers the losses), which specific 5 bottles would you be most heartbroken to lose? You guys wouldn't keep one of your barrel picks? A specific gifted bottle? I don't disagree with your lists, legendary unicorn ambrosia is obviously worth keeping, just wasn't the angle I expected, at least the way you talked about it.
