One of the challenges of rehabilitation of serious behavioral problems is the proper expertise and timing needed at particular parts of the dog's rehabilitation journey. In general, if a trainer is meeting with an owner and doing sessions with the owner to train the owner and the dog together, a lot of information can be missed by the owner and the dog misses out on the highest level of expertise and timing that can help it rehabilitate efficiently. When doing sessions the trainer is working to train both the dog (which is a non-verbal being) and the owner (which is a verbal being) at the same time, because both species require different levels of instruction this becomes a very frustrating scenario for the trainer, owner, and dog in most cases (generally when the standard training progression needs some modification along the way). Additionally, doing sessions with a trainer once or twice per week for an hour or so is okay and some information will be learned that the owner can pass on to the dog, however a lot of information will be lost and key moments in training the dog will be missed between sessions. There are other ways to structure sessions to minimize information lost and minimize time between sessions, however now the owner must have more extensive time available to be able to train the dog between sessions and during sessions. With the board & train style of training the dog is able to be given full attention by the expert trainer, with the proper timing, expertise, and progression adjustments needed to help the dog succeed. The trainer should be vetted by the owner to understand the trainer's level of expertise, there are a lot of bad trainers out there. Additionally, the trainer should not forget about the owner while the dog is with them and should provide multiple updates to the owner throughout the duration of the training program to begin to train the owner for when the dog completes the training program. During the training program, the trainer should be focused on teaching and rehabilitating the dog. Toward the end of the program, the trainer should shift focus to teaching and training the dog's owner / family on how to maintain and continually develop the dog. This technique works extremely well for most people who do not have the time to do many sessions with a trainer to train the dog. The trainer is able to focus on training the dog in a way they understand, then focus on training the owner in a way the owner understands, and synch the dog and owner team together. Everyone will have a different preference in the way to do it, and there are no wrong ways.
