We take a family trip to pickup my newly purchased Lincoln Versailles. This is a very rare car with only 5,000 produced this model year & only 50,000 total production of the Versailles, factor in the fact this car has the rare optional moonroof & optional mag wheels & this is a very rare find! This car actually sat in a field for the past 2 years, it had a for sale sign but with many no trespassing signs & two big guard dogs I guess no one else wanted it as bad as me...(-:

You are exactly right; this was a small Town Car. The fit, finish and ride was very much like its big brother. My mother had a 1979 Versailles and it was great. Very smooth, quiet and heavy, like a luxury car should be!

Just imagine, this car's DNA goes all the way back to the 1960 Ford Falcon. 😃

Michael Bacon Absolutely, this is however the best version of that platform, it actually has factory sub frame connectors.

The heater core in my father’s Mark VI started leaking just enough so when I was up at the lake the windshield started fogging up with sticky antifreeze. I put a couple tablespoons of pepper in the radiator and drove it for a year or so until it got banged up pretty good by a tornado and we sold it.

This one stopped leaking halfway, I think a piece of rust or something just clogged the hole.

Slick Andrews They weren’t about to let that car off the property without a signal from the old man!

@@CarswithNash yes. A very POLITE signal. I kid because, years ago, my band toured through Canada... We were pulled over a few times and damn, if those Mounties weren't the absolute NICEST, most polite cops we'd ever encountered... In fact, everyone we ran into there was SO POLITE... Even in the bars we played, we'd get a big kick out of watching the "mean" drunks getting into fights... THEY were polite... Well, as compared to how people are in the US. CHEERS! Slick

I had a 79 Ford Granada that had all the same options. It was a rare find at the time. Unfortunately, I got rear-ended that tolled it.😢

Even the suspension on a Versailles is upgraded to Lincoln suspension check out the sharks check out the bushings on the on the top of inside the hood where they're connected it's bulky oh yeah it's a Lincoln

I've always loved these. Went car shopping with my dad in 80 and begged him to buy a Versailles and he bought a town car instead 😒
@CarswithNash
@CarswithNash 3 года назад
I believe they were pretty similar in price to the Town Car at the time so I can kind of see his point... They were a neat little car but Lincoln certainly over priced them at the time and that was their main drawback.

ace base Currently I have it in my shop just storing it inside till I get to it. I already bought most the parts I need to sort out the mechanical & get it driving reliably again but haven’t had time. I might not get to that one for a while to be honest, it was an impulse buy & I had a lot of plans ahead of it but I don’t plan to sell it ever, it’s a long term car for me so I will get to it in time & restore it where needed. As it sits I can start it & move it as needed so I rather focus on my none running projects first. Are you on the Versailles facebook group? Very cool to hear of another ‘80, they are a special car no doubt.

dolcevitausa Thanks! I plan to go thru everything on the car & do a massive tune-up before I start driving it, so far it has never failed to start right up when I need to move it, even after sitting the winter it started & idled nicely this spring. Thanks for watching!

A Ford history book that came out in the mid-80's hints that the Lincoln Versailles was a lame answer to the Cadillac Seville. The book called the Chevy Nova-based Caddy a "melting pot of good ideas", but dismissed the baby Lincoln as a "Granada in drag".
@CarswithNash
@CarswithNash 5 лет назад
Michael Bacon Sounds like an opinionated book... I personally don’t think it lacked from the Seville, the Nova platform was pretty old tech by that point, at least the Versailles used a full modern unibody which on my car still doesn’t have any squeaks or rattles etc.
@califdad4
@califdad4 4 года назад
that's because the Seville had its most its own body and interior and a Olds 350 engine, they held their value quite well too. On this car, till Ford redid the roofline, the Lincoln Mercury dealer told me that they never parked one of these near a Monarch , you could hardly tell the difference and in 77-78, Lincoln Mercury dealers had big specials on these trying to sell them, I remember seeing one add that you could buy 2 Lincoln Versailles for like $18,900. I knew of a couple people in my area that did just that, bought one for him, and one for her. Most of these were 302 V8's
@turnne
@turnne 3 года назад
@@califdad4 Well ..I can tell you these were far more reliable than the Seville. The fuel injection system Cadillac used then was half baked..or you could opt for the diesel Olds 5.7 which was almost guaranteed to have engine issues My dad bought a Versailles in 1978 and a friend of the family bought a Seville about the same time Ours never had the shop time the Seville had As for parking these next to a Monarch...sure they were similar as was parking the Seville next to a Nova It would not take rocket science to know that both cars were based on the one next to them There were a lot of differences in the Versailles and Granada/Monarch interior. I would know as my family had both of them at the same time growing up
@califdad4
@califdad4 3 года назад
@@turnne knew many people with SeVilles from this era with no issues and heard from people with the Versailles who did. It's always a luck of the draw , but for my money in that era I stuck with GM, a much better handling car, Ford's power steering system was horrible in that era. It's all over the road unless you are constantly steering and this is going straight. My parents had Ford's and Buick and the Buick was a much nicer car to drive
@turnne
@turnne 3 года назад
@@califdad4 Thats very interesting as my personal experience was very different. As I said my parents had a Versailles and I also drove my parents friends Seville of the same time period. Neither of them handled great. They were both " semi boats". Reliability was better on the Versailles I give Ford the nod in this period as they had not started to downsize and downgrade the engines as much as Cadillac/ GM had Interesting thing...my parents friends traded their Seville in and never bought another American car. My parents went one more American car after the Versailles and didnt buy another one Them GM came out with those downsized boxy full size look alike cars in the mid 80's and they lost a lot of luxury buyers. The area I grew up in( Dallas -Fort Worth Texas) had these old traditional Cadillac buyers running as fast as they could towards BMW and Mercedes benz in the 80's

terje tytland I know it sounds like that but it’s right full and not leaking out. It’s a hydro boost system so a little bit complexed, part of why I haven’t progressed forward with this car yet (it’s in dry storage).
