It's also not inconceivable that Don Vito has and regularly carries a pocket watch. Given his advanced age (figure about 70 years old in 1950?) he would have certainly been carrying one in the 1900s and 1910s when he was in his 20s and 30s. It might have been a hard habit to break for him as a man of tradition.
Nope. The Godfather would wear a pocket watch, not a wristwatch. And almost nobody would know what type because he would never take it out. That is what underbosses and underlings are for.
@@TanBengQiao wrong generation of gangster. Also, Vito Corleone died in the early 50s before the Presidential was invented, or shortly after. Edit. just Googled these facts. So in the original film, or maybe in the novel, Vito Corleone dies in 1955, and the last couple of years of his life he was semi retired, so Michael ran the family business. The Presidential was introduced by Rolex in 1956, a year after Vito Corleone died.
Really cool concept for the video. We've all had enough of just checking "who paid to have their watch on this character's wrist". Your reverse-engineering is way more interesting. I'm wondering about Hannibal's watch, but all the others are absolutely spot on. Btw I love seeing so many completely different watches that I haven't heard of. From time to time it's good to watch something that isn't just a buyer's guide 👌
Weirdly, as elegant as Hannibal is, I don’t see him as a ‘watch guy’. He’d have something decent but understated, as I think anything too horologically _haute couture_ would offend him. He wouldn’t wear a piece that was in anyway intended to draw attention to itself. Maybe a Longines, or considering his history with Japan, a Grand Seiko. Understated elegance, functional, reliable, not too gaudy . . .
It is hard to say if Hannibal is a watch guy or not, but I would imagine that he would either not wearing a time piece or wearing something truly exquisite. When Clarice first met him he could tell what kind of skin cream and perfume she wears, and her cheap shoes with just a glance (mocking her as a rube). The drawing of Duomo with all the fine detail just from his memory, suggested that he is a person with great appreciation of art and beauty (and knows a lot about europe). Another tell was from the scene when he was killing the deputy officers, while enjoying Bach's Goldbery variation. If he owns a time piece, I don't think it would be any main brands like Patek, AP, JL, but most likely from an independent watchmaker. If he is a "real person" living today, I would have to say a Philippe Dufour 's Duality suits him really well (since Hannibal is both brillant and insane).
I don't see it either. The qualities listed are all accurate, but I don't see him having something with that many complications. I see simplicity in function more than something excessively complicated. Something more like a vintage Omega Constellation.
@@jibmo9910 - here's my detailed thinking on the matter; 1) As a gentleman, Hannibal would regard it as vulgar to check the time, or even need to do so. 2) He's retired, so he wouldn't really need to check, and would probably consider doing so contrary to leisurely indulgence. 3) I don't think his preferences for all things 'exquisite' would actually extend to _all_ things. In the books he demonstrates he's somewhat of a car person (Jaguar), but beyond the culinary and artistic, little mention is made of items outside of those pursuits (i.e., cutlery, lacquered picnic hampers, etc.). 4) He might conversely regard any watch - even 'luxury' pieces - as mere 'conveniences' of the people who he would regard as the 'hoi poloi' . . . However, as Harris didn't really adorn Hannibal with details to the extent of bestowing the character distinct and even quite specific brand preferences as Fleming did with James Bond, I agree that there is much room for speculation. It is very tempting to assume that Hannibal would have some extremely elegant, intricate and discreet rose-gold Patek hidden under his cuff with all the secrecy as the Spyderco civilian he keeps hidden under the other . . . But again, I don’t actually see Hannibal as someone who’d be lusting after the best timepiece. Personally I'm guessing he'd have something elegant but also relatively overlooked in horological enthusiast fields, and fairly discreet. I'd think an Omega Constellation - the 1982 ~ iteration with the 'claws' on the side of the case (to mirror his knife or symbolize his predatory nature??). Exquisite, but in a quiet and not really eye-catching way, and flat enough to easily to hide under a shirt cuff. This is my guess! 😅
The Hannnibal Lechter selection is spot on, simply because of the complexity of the watch face. Perfect. Here’s my input: Austin Powers, international man of mystery. His watch, a British Pinion R -1969 . Similar to but not exactly an Omega chrono.
More of these please! I loved the era-accuracy you went for, so much fun and helps provide great context. Also, I’m smitten over Indiana Jones’ and Hannibal’s watch choices🤤
Teddy, loved the idea. Your reverse engineering, as someone put it, works perfectly. Some strong characters from some very diverse movies. Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Lawrence of Arabia, One Flew over the Cucko's Nest, Back to the Future (both characters), Alien, Matrix, Shawshank Redemption to name just a few. I am quite older than your average fan I believe, but always learning something with you. Keep it up.
Absolutely loved it. Bravo! More! That characters available are endless, as are the watches, and the tie ins to modern items available through you. Feel free to access the heritage collections……Tissot……Longines…etc. a smile on 60 yo face on a Saturday afternoon. Bettern Buck Rogers.
Teddy coming up with a toughtful and smart format. A breath of fresh air between all those trending “reacting to watches” videos. Would love to see more
Funnily enough, Teddy's choice for Hannibal isnt too far off for what they chose to fashion Mads Mikkelsen's wrist with for the show. According to the Prop Store auction listing, it was a year/month/day/date multi-calendar watch with a day/night faux-moonphase complication, and falsely branded as a Zenith El Primero in the upper portion of the dial, which implies that the costuming department probably wanted a watch that had both a calendar and chronograph function, similar to what Teddy speculates Lecter would use.
This is a very fascinating idea for a video. The cool thing is seeing how your take would compare to others. I think these choices are well thought out.
Great Video, Teddy! I think your pick of the Patek with Tiffany dial is spot on for the Godfather, and thank you for choosing the Timex over the Swatch for Ferris Bueller. As for Forrest Gump, however, I would go for something like Bulova MIL-W-3818A or Hamilton MIL-W-46374 rather than the Glycine. He was in the Army Special Services, and I feel that the Glycine GMT is a bit too much of a pilot's watch.
I did some research on which brands movie villains wear. I see barely people talk about it. The top brands were Rolex, Breitling, Omega, IWC and Cartier.
I think Ron Burgundy would totally rock the Rolex. The Jaeger is for a serious horologist, which he wouldn't be. The gold Rolex would be far more recognized to the general public. Great video Teddy. Can't wait for part 2.
The man walks around with a flute up his sleeve so I can’t put to rest the idea that he has some appreciation for fine watches haha. Thanks for watching!
Interesting exercise, but for Mr. Burgundy I would have chosen without hesitation the Rolex Day-Date, and with diamonds. I would like to see more of this 😀
I actually picked the same exact watches as you did for Ron, Indiana Jones and Godfather - although for Hannibal I thought something from Vacheron would make a lot of sense, Patrimony perhaps, and for Ferris I had no idea. Really cool concept for a video!
Good choices for the characters, I was going to Sat the JLC is maybe too classy/ understated for Ron someone who literally says ' Stay Classy ' so the gold Rolex was definitely more in character for me! Garish, 70s, his idea of something uber classy!
This is great, Teddy! Really enjoyed it and looking forward to seeing more of this. Only suggestion is maybe you could include the movie titles on top of the Character/Actor name. Some of us may not know one or two of the movies and could pick interest to actually go watch the movies after watching you analyse these characters.
Clever and unusual content that still completely captures my interest. I learned a thing or two as well. Thank you to team Teddy for all the great content on this channel.
For Ferris: consider his parents. He would want the quirky underdog watch but his parents would either buy him a Datejust or a highly expensive digital watch back then.
This was a fun video Teddy, as was said great concept. First watch that popped in my head when you got to Ron Burgundy was actually that anOrdain model 1 plum watch you reviewed about a week ago. That was a awesome watch and ticks all the criteria.
Really really dig this format! I would have gone with the Rolex for Ron Burgundy because it’s a bit more obvious as a luxury item and he would brag about it along with his mahogany furniture… though listening to him grossly mispronounce JLC while bragging would also be hilarious. Keep it up with this format! I think you can even spend more time on the watches themselves or pick one period-correct piece and one modern piece that would work.
I was thinking the same for Ferries Bueller, it would have to be a department store type watch, and both Timex and Swatch were top dogs during the period. Casio as well.
Hannibal: If he bought a watch in the last 15 years or so, I’m thinking Kari Voutilainen, DeBethune, F.P. Journe (centigraph), ALS Triple Split, Patek of course, MB&F for a secondary watch. Great video topic.
Godzilla would need a full size atomic clock to go on his massive wrist as well as fit his theme of nuclear symbolism. The Terminator, being a living computer, would have his own built in timekeeping program within his subroutines, but if he was trying to infiltrate by blending in as an 80s beefcake, I think either the most enormous Panerai he could find, or keeping with his less than organic nature, a digital watch like the Hamilton Pulsar, stainless with red LED display of course.
I loved all the choices! The godfather was SPOT ON! Only change I would make is to give Hannibal a FPJ. I know it's not time consistent, but it matches good taste perfectly 👌🏽
Amazing video! This is cutting edge watch RU-vid content. Please make more of these! Not a big Forrest Gump fan, but perfect Vietnam War watch there, and except for Hannibal Lecter’s watch, which is hard to nail down, but a decent match nonetheless, every other watch is perfectly chosen!
Nice Job Teddy! Everyone else just reviews the same people and the same movies. It’s extremely boring and redundant. You’re effort and approach is appreciated and noted!
Great vid as always! Very interesting to hear your thought process on each character. My only differing view point is on Indy, I really think he would have had a pocket watch
I also thought of that, but I think his pockets would be a little to busy already for them to also accommodate a pocket watch. Because the watch he picked had a pop up lid like many pocket watches used to have, I think the pick is actually spot on.
So we know Teddy did not ask for this in the comments, and after sharing this video with my wife she asked me, "What would Batman wear"; so here goes the definitive list: Christian Bale - AP Royal Oak Offshore black dial Michael Keaton - Ball Engineer Nedu Hydrocarbon Titanium Blue Dial Val Kilmer - Hublot Big Bang Skeleton Dial George Clooney - anything by Invicta
Early 80’s Beuler would have had a digital watch. Not sure if the model with the TV remote was out by then, but if it was he’d have definitely gone with that.
I have to disagree with you on FG's watch. He would not have the patience to deal with the Airman, although I do agree on the multi time zone concept. For Forest, I would pick a low cost hand-wind Timex with a simple three hand Arabic numeral watch.
Gump: Would wear closer to a standard military watch and would still wear it in the 90s. Bulova MIL-W-3818A Bueller: Quirky and techie, I think he'd have the Casio DBC-60.
What a fun video! Would like to see more of these. I had no idea about the Glycene Air Man, so if videos like this introduce me to new watches, I'm all for them. Just want to know what thing; what watch would you put on James Bond?
Great video concept. I would have gone with the Hamilton Team Earth Harrison Ford watch with the coin edge bezel. Perfect watch for Indy, Ford approved.
@Teddy, why don’t you do a wrist check in any of your episodes? Especially the ones where you’re facing camera. Not trying to criticize or anything I truly think it would be cool to see what you’re wearing during these episodes! Awesome video as always
Outstanding episode out of the box thinking, well done...I am going to o go out on a limb here, what about a review of old and new pocket watches? It's rarely discussed, just something a bit different for a future episode..
