I play, mostly, with other seniors, drops are very effective when your arthritic opponents are both back in the court.
@dalevoigt8612
Not certain that I would call that short cut shot a mistake. The results was that one of the best players on the planet barely gets the ball over the net. J.W. judged the results to be good enough that he stays back on defense. One could argue that it would be better to keep working the point by keeping them both back. When they got back to both those players back, they lost the point. The only time one should consider it is if your opponents are deep and preferably if their weight is going backwards too.

Although this drop shot does work with many of the older players I play with, I hardly ever use it because I'd rather just keep my oponents back and attack. I happen to be one of the more mobile players in this group (although I am also an old guy) and although I can on occasion get caught by this kind of shot, more often than not I can 'reach it to get in a better position on the court, at the same time surprising my opponents who aren't expecting the ball to come back.
@IL4aerc
Big T I use that shot (NVZ pop shot to the corner ) in rec play lots! There is only a handful of players that are athletic enough or are prepared to get up there for the return of it. BUT its a really risky shot at times... It can set them up for the ATP or you are off your mark and it lands out!

You've done it again!!

My question is why did Daescu hit Dylan's great get straight back to Jdub? It looked like he could've ripped his 2-BH do the right, forcing Jdub wide and opening up the whole court while Dylan was getting back onto the court. I'm sure it's easier to think that in hindsight, it's just that it didn't seem like Daescu was under any pressure from the hustle get by Dylan, so it seems he would've had time to hit a pressure shot to the right side instead of right back to JDub.

This is an excellent example of what I see often. If you have your opponent's back at the baseline, I try to keep them there, waiting for a better opportunity. Many players will want to drop that shot, but you lose your advantage. I only drop that shot if I drive them back a little deeper and the players load up to hit a hard drive. Doing that, most players have their weight back, making it harder to get to a drop.
@GammonMaster-PcP
I would have done the soft, short shit myself and most would miss it but these guys are athletic and serious pros, amazing play 👌
@wizardnone
I think it's more that JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier made several phenomenal plays rather than Daescu making mistakes. This drop shot would have been a winner without the extraordinary save by Dylan Frazier. How many players would be able to get to this drop shot? Even though he got to it, Dylan Frazier's team's position worsened as it changed from 2-up/2-back to 2-up/1-back (with 1 off the field) thus giving Daescu's team a more advantageous position. But, despite their weak position their continued phenomenal play carried the day. Also, note in the next match against Staksrud/Wright, Staksrud makes a similar slice drop shot as Daescu with 2-up/2-back but this time Dylan Frazier tries but can't reach it in time.
@j4ta680
How do they hit it so high over the net and it still lands in the kitchen? Tons of topspin, or just the right touch? Whenever I hit it that high over the net, my taller opponents just reach forward and put it away.
@okayest_amateur
I understand the drop shot decision however when you are dealing with highly mobile players they will get the ball and then you lose the advantage. better play safe and keep hitting long.
@jimh.4027
I don't use the cut volley drop shot against fast opponents. It just brings them to the net. It works against slower opponents.
@raymondeargle8653
yes, this syle happens often.
@SpicyCurryProd
I just turned 59 a few days ago, which means on Jan. 1, 2025, I will age up into the 60+ division. I've played a few 60+ players who are good, but overall, the wheels aren't as fast as they used to be, so I've been practicing both the lob and this drop shot volley in anticipation of 60+. I've been using it in drills and practices against my older 4.0+ and 4.5+. players, and it works! They often don't even try and run up and get it, and the few times that they do, they BARELY get to it, setting it up for us for an easy put away. So yeah, I plan to use it more and more, along with the lob, to move my opponents back and forth, wearing them out. I won't over-use it, and will use in certain situations, but I'm planning on perfecting it so I have it in my tool bag. ;-)
@j4ta680
When that guy scrambled and popped up the drop shot, his opponent should have put it away. Instead, it hit it right to the other guy who was trying to cover the whole near side by himself.
@kbotelho27
Hard to figure out why Dillion hit those three middle balls after recovering from chasing down the drop shot. Guess it shows you don't have to be perfect all the time, just get the ball back one more time 😀
