Excellent game. Good to see how Rory plays his game. New player impressive. No rushing, no forcing, almost seems like he was relaxed and in control of his game. Well done Rory.
Yes he's good. A week later we played in a tournament. We went seven and one. Unfortunately, the game we lost was the semi-final game to get into the finals. We lost that game 15 to 14. So, we played for the bronze and won that game. It was a money tournament. First place was $500. Second place was $200. We got $100 for third. My partner did not have a dupr rating. Eight games were put into duper and his duper is 4.235. Thanks for watching.
5:05 Rory question. Is his serve legal? Asking because I used to do one similar but people said illegal to hit DOWN on the serve. I see he comes back up AFTER he makes contact but is that legal? Great play for a beginner obviously. What level are YOU ranked? You may have said and I missed it.
It probably is illegal. I have told him about it and he has changed his serve. When I play in tournaments, mostly with my mixed doubles partner, we play at the 3.5 level. We played in a tournament this weekend at that level. They had combined 3.5 and 4.0. We finished second to a 4.0 team. Her duper rating is 3.235. My duper rating is between 3.5 and 4.0. When I get to 4.0, we'll play at the 4.0 level. The issue is, raising, or lowering a dupr rating happens incrementally. It takes a while to go from one level to the next.
Rory loved getting to watch you play. Pay no attention to the haters on your play. From playing table tennis, tennis, and now pickleball I know that there are certain players that play an awkward but EFFECTIVE style of play. They are not smooth and athletic like in their motions and often look choppy and almost off-beat in their steps and rythym. HOWEVER they are extremely difficult to play against because you never know how to track their shots. Timing is sort of "herky jerkey" as we used to say. Now I dont know enough about the game to rank players level and I'm curious what yours is.....but I can assure viewers that its probably alot higher than he may appear in this video. 1. He's playing in more of a teaching/helping role with a beginner and 2. This awkward but highly effective style of play is often hard to judge skill level until youre getting your a$$ beat and realize....this guys good!
Regardless of your skill level or rank your insight and advice is tremendously helpful and your channel is one of my absolute favorites to gorge for knowledge! Keep it up and please keep uploading your games. Remember as a content provider myself I always remember that ALL comments raise your channels rank on RU-vid including the haters....it takes all kinds!
@@pickleballpick-apart9787 Nah, watched his serves at 0.25 speed, distinct upward motion and contact point is legal, we up here in Canada say the serve is fine. 😅 Rory, you sound very funny at 0.25 speed!
Rory, what happened to the previous video that you posted a few days ago where you play against the two college tennis players? I know you took a lot of criticism for your play but I gave you credit for posting the video although it didn’t make you look the best?
Thanks for asking. There was a person in the video who was watching and said I didn't have his permission to put him on RU-vid. So, he asked me to take it down. From now on I will shoot with the camera pointing at the wall and not spectators. I didn't think that would have been an issue.
He did very well. Not that its surprising padel and tennis are very similar, so he has tons of racquet experience. I think I'd be more surprised if he did NOT do well. Haha
@pickleballpick-apart9787 Padel is even more similar. It's basically pickleball with a very thick paddle and you can use the walls indoors. Eddie and Webby (pickleball youtube) tried it and was able to get great games on first day just using pickleball skills. Very high paced, lots of overheads and running. Lol
Rory, although you’re getting some haters from the last couple videos, I want to give you props for the new direction - critiquing your own matches and not focusing on players’ levels. Knowing your opponent’s level does not make you a better pickleball player. Learning from mistakes does. In the last video, questions like why were their lobs so effective and what could you have done differently to defend them? Or in this case, what did Ben do to make Michelle pop up so often and when she managed no to, how did she? Addressing these questions help. Looking forward to seeing more like this. 🙏🏼 Ben is the first Pádel player I’ve seen try PB. Shows how much crossover there is. Now I want to try Pádel, but wow, that looks like a workout!
Rory- you hit some nice backhand angle dinks shots early in the game. I was hoping to see more of those cross court dink rallies but they were rare. Nice playing between you and partner. Very well done.
The new guy did a nice job with the third shot drops considering he is very new to the game. I would be interested in seeing him play full court singles where the drops would be rare and I could see his tennis skills come into play from the backcourt.
Have you ever played padel? He has. I'm not sure how much he's played padel. Maybe that's why he did such a good job considering he's playing pickleball for only the fifth time.
He did really well. If he switches to a topspin serve with more speed instead of that slice, he will be even better. The slice only works on beginners that don't anticipate how far the ball will move sideways.
He did very well for just 5 games. Drop shots and ball handling was very good. I would've expected Michelle to change her approach a lot sooner, given her experience.
@@pickleballpick-apart9787 I'm wondering in your experience playing PB, do you think its a common occurrence for players to not adjust in a match? For instance players who constantly drive or pop the ball up etc etc lose points and think I need to do something different cause what I am doing isn't working. I often find people I play with or against aren't familiar with dropping a ball (to reset), often lose points/games.
My impression also. Serves appeared to be above the waist and not in an upward direction. His hand didn't appear to be above the paddle either. I'd like to see Rory's take. 🏓
Absolutely he was. (3:55) - like totally inside the kitchen almost all the way up to the net, in fact. Not just touching the line - ALL the way in the kitchen.
No way after 2 years of asking, you show us a 3.0 game. You have not shown the ability to do anything you recommend in your reviews of other players. You run around your backhand to hit a forehand in front of your left leg twice. You did not show the ability to consistently hit drops. You tried to speed up off of the first dink you saw. You consistently had weak serves. You are critical of other people doing this and you do the same 3.0 level plays. Overall it is not evidently clear who the beginner on the court was. He set you up for put aways, when he got a short return he accepted the easy drop that allowed you up to the kitchen.
That is a bit harsh on Rory. I was a bit surprised at avoiding the backhand even when the shot was very awkward, but all other shots seemed solid. The speed up into the net happens at all levels and that was not the first dink. He had a very nice cross court exchange including a perfect backhand to the opponents extreme back foot which resulted in an error. Ben was very impressive for his 5th time out. You mentioned it in the video, but it may be worth repeating that most new players with a tennis background rely on power and are uncomfortable with the soft game. Ben’s feel for drops is pretty incredible for only playing five times!
I just wanted to show that a tennis player new to pickleball does not have to rely on a power game. I was kind of shocked how good he was at the short game.
I will repeat what I posted below - Rory takes the role of a sports commentator when he critiques various games. Sports commentators are not expected to be experts at football, basketball, soccer, etc. He doesn't claim to be a pro, and in fact he's been fairly self-deprecating in the past. To be a good sports commentator you need to understand the sport well enough to analyze it. Period. And as for Rory's ability to ANALYZE pickleball, he is EXCELLENT at that. Don't conflate these unrelated issues.
