Some great ideas, but the most important factor in not becoming a target is situational awareness. Whether you are avoiding pickpockets or getting out of a dangerous crowd situation before it erupts, or not becoming one of the victims in an active shooter event, being aware of your surroundings at all times is critical. Those socks saved me in Indonesia decades ago when our bus was held up and everyone robbed. I had enough cash for the day in my purse, which was stolen, along with my watch (not a very expensive one), but my passport was in a hidden pocket in my undies and my ID and credit card was in that zippered pocket in my socks. BTW, I hope your property wasn't damaged by the recent storms.
We started just going to secondary cities in Italy. Man, it was such a pleasant and enjoyable trip that you feel safe and relaxed without worrying being targeted by those big city horrible thefts.
I just got a Baggallini for an upcoming trip! I’ve been using it and I love it even around local hometown places. No worries. It’s all about making yours harder to get into than someone else’s.
I believe the entire bag is slash resistant. At least the Travelon bags I have are. They have small cable wires crisscrossed within the fabric. Absolutely love these bags!
I’m so glad to learn about anti-theft bags and purses! I’ve been engineering a cross-body bag that I was going to assemble before my next trip, but if someone’s already done the work, well, groovy! I’m sure they’re better-looking than my creation would be, too.
After watching a woman get her phone stolen right out of her hand by a kid on a bike in Dublin I purchased a really heavy duty wrist strap that attached inside the phone case. Definitely a good purchase for bigger cities
A wrist strap is a bad idea, instead of just loosing a phone which would be a inconvenience, you could/would be taken off of your feet dragged along the road/pavement risking serious injuries to you. Better to chalk it up to experience and get another phone.
@@SteveMrW in my opinion it makes the snatcher think twice and move on to the next person. Just returned from London and I’d say 50% of people had one.
@@tylerbennett3102 unfortunately the one I bought is not available any more (my husband went to buy one for his phone) but I’m sure any good strap will make them think twice
The comment I heard was to consider those pockets inside your clothes as "Deep Storage" Things that you don't need day to day, like your spare credit card, extra money, passports.... And I agree, the best defense is to be annoying to the thieves, so they move on to the next victim!
I’m in France right now and my travel partner was pickpocketed yesterday. She had a Bagallini bag which did not have the zipper locks. She was jostled on a train and her wallet was gone. The zipper locks with Travelon work!
Awareness is a must when traveling ... Yes, I have thwarted the pickpocks in Madrid! THANKS Lauri for your constant reminders.... because we need constant awareness!
@TravelTipsbyLaurie Laurie... Please add to your list ... while sitting at your Gate, sit against the wall or window and stay away from the concourse walkway ... it just makes sense to do the simplest things to protect yourself! Thanks for all you do ...to make preparing for your trip part of the adventure! Next spring, I am cruising to Spain with friends who have not traveled. They are enjoying and gaining much from your insight!!!
Laurie, I recently went on a Tour Bus Trip to the coast of Ireland. I ordered several of your recommendations (cross body purse and rfd wallet). The first day was scheduled as a "free day" and we started in Dublin. While walking to a restaurant my daiughter wanted to go to, it was raining pretty steady and I was very wet and uncomfortable and needed to adjust my rain coat several times. We were a block from the restaurant when a young woman walking towards us stopped and said to me "Mam, I believe you've just been pick pocked". Everything stopped. I looked down at my cross body bag and it was unzipped, and the small wallet was lifted up - all my cash and my daughter's credit card was gone. By the time we called Visa, these thiefs had withdrawn $1400., and second withdrawal of $900 before the third wallet was denied. Then a trip to Dublin Police to file a report - very expensive lesson - folks, these people are good at what they do. I never felt a thing. Please be aware.
That’s why I don’t carry wallet . Put one credit card and one ID and $20-$30 cash in the inside zipper of your purse . Rest I keep in hotel safe . If a thief gets into outer zipper my phone and only my sunglass case there
I am a big fan of the crossbody bags! Being a bigger buy (6'-1" and former bodybuilder) I always attracts a lot of attention, no matter what I wear. nothing I can really do about it. So I bought a very secure crossbody. It is military-looking, which I'm not too crazy about, but since I draw a lot of attention, I opted for security over looks.
I always travel with a backpack with lockable zips and RFID pockets and I also have a crossbody bag with lockable zips and RFID pockets and never encountered any problems. I have a RFID sleeve for my passport and another for my credit cards which are is easy to use. All of these assist in making you less of a target for an opportunist.
we use passport "booklets" and have no issues-- we pull out the passport when it is time to show it and then slide it back into the booklet as soon as we are done.. I wear a slim sling bag that lays close to my body and our passport booklets fit inside- this way we don't have to worry about out passports getting miss placed or scanned by some RFID scanner
I really like my Scottevest. I also like the secure anti-theft Baggallini bags. My best crossbody is Tumi Langley due to how it opens. Love your videos! 😊
I have the 1st ( traveling) bag you showed for years in my favorite color olive green. Love it. And being a girl from the Bronx, I'm always aware of my surroundings
Hey Laurie, I was shopping this week for clothing my husband can wear for our Italy trip. FISHING SHIRTS!! May have UV protection, very light with ventilation as well as hidden pockets. Some are more obvious than others, but still would be harder to get into undetected. He already has some cargo style pants, but I might check to see if any of the fishing pants also have hidden pockets. I also have a lady’s fishing shirt in my Amazon cart right now with a hidden zipper pocket. I’m a little busty so not sure how that will pan out. Would love some ideas from your husband so we can help keep our guys safe too.
I use a neck wallet and a money belt. The neck wallet can be used as purse wallet. I connect the wallet neck strap to the key clip inside my Travelon purse which is a crossbody. It makes it hard to pickpocket and keeps me from leaving my wallet behind when I am disoriented from jet lag.
Always be aware of your surroundings , instead of a backpack , i rather take a crossbody bag for daily walking with just the things i need and in crowded areas always hold it in front of you and i always watch the direction of the zipper to be forward , nothing easier to steal in crowd from than a bag with the zipper at the backside. If you use bigger purse or backpack , have your phone and money inside a inner pocket of it , and never wide open to reach for it for the wrong eyes to see where you keep them.
Great video when I travel with my passport, I don’t use one of those passport holders. Your passport contains a code that can be scanned with one of those readers, so I actually have an RFID protected sleeve that I keep my passport in. I also have those sleeves for my credit cards too.
Hi Laurie have been enjoying your videos lately and your tips are super helpful. One thing - i don’t carry a separate wallet . I stash 1 credit card inside the inner zipper of crossbody with some cash for the day . I also do not carry a passport wallet . I put passport in a ziploc in inside zipper . So if someone opens outside zipper no wallet or passport to take out and it won’t drop out accidentally either . I use the Kipling cross body with zippers outside and inside . I also have travelon in the past and may go back to it . A whole wallet is not necessary . I just put my id and my credit card in inside zipper . Carry the minimal possible for trips.
I use the Kipling Alvar crossbody . It’s a bit more medium size but it can hold a mini umbrella and a small water bottle too . I have the mini version of the bag too if one just needs sunglasses , phone . It’s important to have inner zippers in crossbody . I have even carried my passport inside the inner zippers .
Hi Laurie, great tips as always, especially now that we’re in peak travel season. I purchased that Travelon bag in blue based on your recommendation & it served me well in Europe this past May. But I have gone back to using a passport wallet after losing my passport the day I was supposed to leave for that trip; after I returned I bought one from Amazon that’s completely RFID-protected AND accommodates an Apple AirTag. Thanks for all of your great tips!
That is super! What part of the wallet do you think will help in the future? I’m not being sarcastic 💙 Just trying to figure out where the breakdown could be with others.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I know you would never respond to a comment sarcastically! The first benefit for me is the AirTag slot that’s already occupied (I activate “Find My” periodically & it works!). I selected a bright, high contrast color for the booklet so I’ll see it easily, even in a bag w/dark lining. And it has a texture that is not slick or slippery so it does stay put in whichever bag I put it into. Checks all of my boxes!
There are actual bra bags. Usually made out of silk or silk-like material with a ribbon or longer strip of cloth to hang on straps or side of the bra. Just big enough for a credit card and/or a few folded bills.
The problem with the scarf with the secret pocket is that it would be way too easy to be forgetful and end up leaving the scarf behind somewhere...with your passport in it.
My passport, ID, credit card, and money were always inside RFID envelopes I got through Amazon and in a security belt around my waist inside my pants. The only thing a thief could get from my purse was tissue and a few pounds.
Use metal chain for a crossbody bag some chains come with a pad covering ther shoulder part of the chain so it's more comfortable and almost impossible to slash
Thanks Laurie for sharing super helpful tips. Please share something more about your canada trip. I would be travelling to Vancouver. Thanks once again. ❤
One tip for women especially with the money belt is to turn it around so it's in the small of your back. So much more comfortable! Also, I sometimes bring a money belt like thing that goes around your calf. I put the top of my sock around it for added security. We've been around the world, and have never been robbed. Like you said be smart, be aware and you'll be fine.
Great tips! It is really sad we have to do this if we want to go to Europe... In China, I can leave my luggage case by a table indoors or outdoors for an hour without any problem, (my own experience)...
Do you have a video on how to wash clothes while in an another country? And how to pack souvenirs so as not to bulk up my one suitcase that I use as a carry on?
Hi, here is one: ru-vid.comdQw4n0r09Kkru-vid.comdQw4n0r09Kk Friends will check an empty suitcase for their laundry so they can put souvenirs in their carry-on.
In Europe you'd normally show your passport at the gate and/or immigration before you get to the gate & not at security. You just scan your boarding pass at security. And of course at immigration on arrival, if you arrive from outside Schengen zone.
I love the scarf with the hidden pockets. I checked it out on Amazon Canada and it is $93 compared to $37 on the American Amazon. Going to have to pass on it.
QUESTION. Love your tips, bought the Lovevook backpack for my personal item and love it. My hubby is looking for a similar item but obviously that one is girly. lol. Any suggestions. He wants a backpack with water bottle holder and strap for suitcase but small enough for personal item. Thanks
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie thanks for the reply but he is looking g for one that is more like the lovevook, one big open compartment like a backpack with side water bottle and slip on luggage strap
PacSafe are terrific products. In addition to/proof straps, their bags are encased in a metal cage so that a thief can't slash the bottom of the bag and steal the contents as it dumps on the ground.
Hi Laurie, I'm so glad that your video came across my feed. I've seen other videos that have luggage where the TSA people can use a pen to open a zipper luggage. Do you recommend luggage that is safer? Thanks
I saw something about the pen in the zipper trick, too. There are zipperless suitcases that have strong buckles/latches that lock. They're supposed to be harder to get into.
@GinnyVOfficial yes I agree. I try and put everything in my one suitcase. And one back pack. But recently I found those cubes to pack my clothes in with the pump so I can vacuum seal my clothes. And what I usually do is pack light and bring an extra duffle bag to use for souvenirs.
I have used money belts for years...latest is RFID, of course, as well as an RFID small thing that can hang around your neck. My everyday card holder is an old PacSafe and it can even put my passport in it, snugly, and close the tab. I keep bills and coins separately as well as keeping my health cards, car insurance, medical card in another holder...I used to carry a full "clutch" wallet, but decided to separate all my important things into different holders, so not everything can be lifted at once! So, I try to be as safe as possible at home, too.
Hey! I was wondering for tsa, for the liquid 3-1-1 rule, is it fine if i use a clear pencilcase for my liquids? The width is the same as those tsa approved bags on amazon but just half the height.
I have long hair so I bought the scrunchies that has zippers so I hid extra cash and credit card there. 16 days we were in Europe and we are ok. The 2 ladies almost pickpocketed my hubby on a crowded train however I managed to deter them and the other locals as well help me out
Has anyone purchased a VISA gift card to use in Europe? Keep the real cards in the these money belts and such. Just wandering how those worked over there? Might be good to use pre loaded cards for street vendors.
