Use a bread wrapper tie to connect your zippers to your o-ring on your purse when you travel anywhere pickpockets may be. Wind it up well. They can’t risk the time it takes to unwind it. I also have a smallish crossbody purse with leather ties on the zipper. I double knotted them to my o-ring & kept valuables inside there. Again, lots of trouble for them to get into. There are easier marks out there. I’ve done this in London, Paris, & Rome and stayed safe. If you need to get at your money, you can take the time to untie it. A bit inconvenient but, rather that than lose it. Never leave anything valuable in a zipper compartment that is not secured. Pickpockets don’t usually get violent but can push up against you and crowd you or cause a distraction or disturbance around you. That’s when they open that zipper, slide into that bag, or pick that pocket. Nice that your fellow passenger helped you out. Most of them are very nice and don’t want tourists hassled either.

I was pickpocketed in Nice outside the train station. In 1983. They are good. Very good. Got into my purse and got my wallet. But all my documents were in a pouch sewn into my back brace. Cannot be too careful. Glad you’re okay.

It was a very good store with excellent prices and sales I loved it. Unfortunately they closed after some local people protested against them since it wasn’t an American store. Too bad many loved it !

Oh Jen! How awful to have such a frightening experience on the metro. As a female solo traveler, I have learned the hard way to put actual locks on all my zippers. I have been in some scary situations, but never with a child. I applaud your strength to keep it together and protect Griffin. I am glad you were still able to enjoy Disney and your Air BnB. Many countries in Europe have those styles of grocery stores where part of it is food, and the other part is lots of other things such as electronics, home goods, clothes, bedding, etc. I've been to some that even sell furniture! I think Target got the idea from European stores, and is trying to introduce the idea into the US, along with Walmart with their Super Stores.

My goodness that is SO scary! Glad you took a safer route and were able to settle in! I'm so jealous of their McDonald's lol Fun time shopping!

I'm so sorry about the experience you had on the metro. When you are traveling in busy public areas, the anti-theft purse is a decent option, but more importantly, you want to put it around you & wear a jacket over top of it, so that it's difficult to tell that you even have it with you (at least that's the kind of thing that was recommended when I lived in Europe - but that was many years ago). Thank goodness you were not physically hurt, although the mental toll it takes on you was probably just as difficult as physical injury. I do hope that the remainder of your trip goes smoothly (& of course, a similar incident could have happened anywhere, whether in the US or abroad, and thank goodness there was a good person behind or beside you who witnessed what happened & was able to get your phone back for you).

Not sure if you know this, but Google has a translate option that if you hold your phone up to the stuff that needs translating, it'll do it! I saw this on the top flight video when they visited Japan and wanted to know what the menu said. Lol obviously I had to find a Chinese menu I have at home and it totally works!

I understand about having to pay for the bathroom usage. When I was in Mexico, I had to pay approximately 10 cents for one sheet of toilet paper. It's so poor there. I still remember we were driving late at night, and kids were selling Chicklets gum or whatever. And flowers. So glad you are okay. My dad will only drive places now.

A little surprised that you did not mention that the Eurostar went under the channel in a 20 minute long tunnel. Sady not surprised by the attempted pickpocketing- it is rife in Paris - even inside Disney! But glad you are all ok. Now you now change formation so that hubby is last so he can see what is happening!

Unfortunately this has happened to me when i was traveling solo in europe, i found out this often happens to people who talk with an accent. I was on a call with my parents leting them know where i was and where i was traveling. Luckily i was not hurt and i reported the incident. It really ruiens a holiday. Im glad your safe

So sorry you had such a scary experience. The Metro is usually pretty safe, but pickpockets seem to have an uncanny ability to spot American tourists. I don't know if it would have helped to make some noise when those bug guys hemmed you in. Sometimes a very loud "Excuse me!!" calls unwanted attention to the miscreants and they'll leave you alone, but nothing works the way it used to.

I’m so sorry that happened. I have a device called a birdie you hook it onto your bag or your belt loop on your pants and if needed you pull it and it makes a loud beeping noise. I recommend getting that for you and your family but if you do buy it, I hope you never have to use it

The fact that those big guys went aggressive on you is so terrifying. I am 18 and never travel solo because of this reason . One of my classmates encountered a similar situation in metro( india ) .
