Tenkara Fly Fishing is relatively new on the scene in the United States in the past 10 years. However, in Japan they've been using this method for the past few hundred years in the high country. Check out this awesome fly fishing set up that weighs only 2.1 ozs...perfect for backpacking!

Hey glad you found Tenkara, come join one of our groups online and learn about it :) For example, when you say "Tenkara is more of a sight fishing..." etc, that is actually not correct. Tenkara is not about sight fishing. Tenkara is a sub-surface method of Japanese fly fishing that dates back centuries... you don't fish to rising fish when you are fishing the Tenkara style. Of course, enjoy your rod however you'd like, and you can certainly dry fly fish. Also the "Normal line" or the "round line" is called "level line" which is a kind of fluorocarbon line. Don't add any extra line onto the level line to make it longer. Just use 3-4 feet of tippet on your level line, which should be about 1 foot longer than your rod. When you hook the fish, you don't raise the rod up, you just tip it backwards, angling your hand backwards. You want to keep your arm down lower, making sure you have room to move your arm up if the fish runs towards you, in order to take up the slack, or you'll lose your fish at your feet. Just a few pointers for you as a new Tenkara angler. But just an FYI, there're many places you can learn about this stuff from - its an extremely well established style with world-renowned professional anglers, and you should check out what its really all about. Try searching "Discover Tenkara" and start with those guys. Tenkara USA has some good videos too. Thanks for sharing Tenkara with others, its super fun!

still love this video a year later! :) I have reduced it all down for myself. I found a Tenkara rod less than 15"...I have a 7,5 ft 7 piece fly rod...I have a tiny telescopic spinning rod...I carry all these in my Orvis Guide Sling Pack - One small box carries all my flies and a few small lures! (and the pack carries my water, snacks, net, and my concealed carry! lol)

Great video. I like the simple grab and go setup. Would mind doing a follow up video explaining your various flies?

Hi Dave, sure! I'll do a quick video about the flies I like to use in my area. I'll plan to shoot it tomorrow when I'm up at Hancock Lake and will post it this week. Thanks for the video idea!

I love all forms of fishing, fly fishing is my passion though, it's the only type of fishing I do. In my opinion Tenkara rods limit what you can do. I can take a multi-piece rod, of any desired length, that's packable for hiking, and do the same thing - dapping, nymphing etc. - that the Tenkara rod does. I can rig a multi-piece rod in less than two minutes without hurrying. But, if I need to make a long cast, or fight a large fish from the reel, giving line if needed, I can't do that with a Tenkara rod. I'm a minimalist too. I can carry everything I need on a necklace, that's not unique to Tenkara. I get it though if you're into the esoteric aspects of different styles, that's great. I'm going back to fiberglass and bamboo, although I love fishing with my graphite rods too. As for teaching someone to fly cast, a traditional rod will do what the Tenkara rod does. I just don't see any advantage using a Tenkara rod. Just my opinion:)

I have decided to research tenkara fly fishing since my flyrod and reel were stolen while backpacking the Sierra. My question is does tenkara fly fishing work equally well with dry flies, nymphs and streamers? I personally have enjoyed nymph fishing. I discovered your videos and have subscribed. I'm retired and have an income and am ready to ditch traditional life as I know it and spend the rest of my years on the road. Planning has started this year....Thanks for the videos...Taimen

Are there any good dispersed camping spots along streams in the Pike/San Isabel? I've been trying to find some on Google maps, but I'm having some difficulty.

Great information here. Is there anywhere in the Buena Vista area to pick up a Tenkara setup?

Hi Barron, I think Ark Anglers carries them but I'm not 100% sure. I got my fly rod from TenkaraUSA.com.

Kk, cool. I'm thinking the internet is likely the best bet. A video on how to choose a Tenkara rod, what to look for / avoid may be a cool thing. Thanks for the reply!

LL Bean has at least one style of Tenkara rod in their stores They have the Sato rod (10’ 8” to 12’ 9” adjustable) and full Starter Kit. About $250. Tenkarausa.com has all of the rods. I do not have one yet but the first will be the Ito (13’ - 14’ 7”). Whole kit is about $250.

Hi Daryl, the small chest bag came with my larger Fishpond backpack that I use for fishing trips. Here is the link to the chest bag - fishpondusa.com/product/detail/san-juan-vertical-chest-pack/2424. Very useful for minimalist fly fishing!

+Colorado Backcountry Adventures Thanks, I added it to my wish list. I've been Tenkara fishing for years but mostly for bass and bluegill. Would love to get up to Leadville CO and try some streams, probably next year. Things here in St Louis, Mo is busy. I'm sorting though my parents estate and working on my truck camper too. Do I need a fishing guide for the area? Awesome videos, thanks for putting them together. It definitely takes some effort.

Yes I clarified that in the video description. Which Tenkara rod do you have? I just picked up the Iwana from Tenkara USA. I really like it.

Colorado Backcountry Adventures I have the Iwana too. I love the simplicity usually carry it when ever I take the dog for a walk along the river. On my end cap I have a bright yellow loop of gutted paracord making a 6 inch loops. When ever I take three cap off I clip it to my little fish bag.
