When Pie gets a gig presenting a new documentary about climate change by eco-filmmaker Franny Armstrong, he thinks he's in for a jolly couple of days by the seaside. For more info and credits go to pienetzero.com
There is actually a couple more that I can think of... I don't remember the first one's name, but he's almost instantly recognisable in that the way he dresses makes him look like he's a time-displaced reporter from the early 1900s, wearing a trenchcoat and a hat with one of those little "press" notes on it... Second one is Amy Goodman.
@@lordwunglerbeckett Just for you, I went on a search for him. And I found 'im. He's known as Greg Palast and is a freelance investigative journalist. I seem to have misremembered the stuff about him having the "press" note in his hat, (haven't been able to find so much as a single shot of him with one of those as a matter of fact, so I guess that's something my brain has always kinda subconsciously added whenever I've seen him,) but aside from that, yeah, he still looks like he's a time-displaced journalist from the early-mid 1900s... He's not perfect, of course, no-one is, but he's good, and it seems to me that he's got his heart in the right place, frequently putting his focus on exposing corporate malfeasance as well as doing everything in his power to push labour unions and consumer advocacy groups to the forefront. A couple of personal recommendations: A report on vulture funds in Liberia from 10 years ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6TtS4AZk6DI.html Bit more recent and relevant; a report on racial voter suppression and vote theft from the 2016 election: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zvgEYp-vxZQ.html Very recent and relevant; how Bernie Sanders and his voters were suppressed in California 2016, and may very well be suppressed again (most of this clip is Lee Camp talking about information dug up by Greg, but Greg himself has some choice words at the end, too): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JSsrRXvD1PI.html
@@lordwunglerbeckett You're welcome. And, uh, I hope he'll manage to restore a little bit of your faith in modern journalism. (We really do need some fresh, new blood there, though; both Amy and Greg are over 60 now and, like Bernie, they probably won't be around for much longer...)
Hi Legend Zero, this is Franny the writer/director/sort-of actor. You don't know how happy your comment makes me - Tom and I had a hunch that what you're saying was true and we set out to make this film to prove it. Totally chuffed that we succeeded! I just tweeted your comment on @frannyarmstrong by the way - thanks so much for writing
________ yeah that's right, say what we need to do is give the government and Google and Facebook and the oil companies and the military industrial complex and the banks and the federal reserve even more power because they're great at protecting our freedoms and privacy and prosperity
I watched Pie from the beginning and I'm always impressed by his ability to deliver without fault, current issues in a comical way, with a serious undertone. This issue cracked me up, but I was pleased to see him getting his hands dirty, litter picking. A problem that I regularly address. Keep 'em coming Jonathan!
This really encapsulates what 'Jonathon Pie' was all about right at the beginning: "What news reporters actually think and do off camera" It's so great to see Pie is still being pie after years, and so good it's for a real cause. Also the self-deprecation section hanging on to the boat was really emotive. It really made a difference on me, and the conclusion: "Capitalism, Baby!" could not be truer. Amazing work as always, but this tops every video made by Pie. Congratulations to everyone involved!
I had a stroke 4 weeks and would like to think your comments would have liked to have what would have liked to have said, so thankyou for your comment, I did my best to convey my thanks!
"or we could just not eat cow" p: "we all like a burger. don't we" "yeah, but we could eat seaweed burger" p: "that's not going to happen" "yes it is" p: "uhhh... how are we doing, franny" I'm dead
@@scotsbillhicks I do love Partridge, too. Hmmm ... Partridge and Pie. A slice of Partridge Pie ...? But no, Coogan may yield to the lure of the BBC but not Pie. IMHO.
@@rootangent2472 Knowing the BBC they will just call it 'Pie and Partridge' because to be quite frank with you anything the BBC does these days is a fucking adventure. I'm joking but I really like your idea! :)
I think the part where he was sitting down having a quiet think about things after his rant and then walking alone on the beach, which you mentioned, was a very poignant moment. It had that, 'well I've spent the day with people who are really trying to do stuff, what the hell am I doing?' feel about it.
Baldrick So true - I hadn’t thought of your point that he might have been realising that he’d been with people who are actually doing something about the crisis. Before that, his rant felt like he was speaking for all of us individuals who feel powerless in the face of it all, but then he actually did something about it, which makes me think I can too.
Tom this is brilliant. In the age where most people are getting their news from talk show comedians because the real news is too depressing, you've managed to find a comedic format that gets across an overlooked topic without undercutting the tone with a studio audiences laugh track.
Haha, I love pie, because its fucking not gonna happen unless you tax the "peasants" out of being able to eat meat, but then if you do that, guarantee you'll lose the next election.
I laughed until it hurt then sat back at the end with a very nasty hollow feeling in my stomach, genius Pie, genius. Thumbs-up to EVERYONE who was involved in this fabulous production.
I've only been watching Mr Pie for a couple of weeks, but I subscribed after watching the first upload. I have to be select when I do due to uncontrollable laughter! Thank you.
When I was younger I stayed in Coverack every summer for 10 years, it's my favourite childhood memory... bizarre to suddenly see Jonathan Pie running around the place doing his usual routine of swearing and insulting everyone around him. Two worlds collide
What did I do? Gave up meat, moved closer to work to cycle or walk, went on UK holidays, bought ethically produced products (where possible), locally sourced food etc... but I don't have kids. I find it truly alarming that often the parents of kids are the ones taking the least amount of action. Thank you pie for highlighting the issues
I love the ending in the beach, even thought the rant in the boat was true, the end proves that sometimes, just sometimes, we do give a little bit of shit 😊👍
I would like to send a personal message to Mr Pie for his great resolve and dedication in single handedly saving our planet. If he doesn't receive a knighthood something is seriously wrong. The world owes him .
Thanks Tom Walker. This is the most honest portrayal of climate change. The last shot was awe inspiring in the sense that with a bit of work we can all do something. So thank you :-)
chokinonashes61 don’t we all, what a let down. And nothing of any worth has come from Labour ever since, except the comedy value of their in-fighting over things that only the most privileged could ever get passionate about.
@@harveylimpopo3042 This is the response from all hardcore environmental activists, they really think they are going to get you to join their insanity, by force if necessary.
@@stephenmason1028 well, Australia's on fire, so that's a pretty strong imperative...But tbh I don't particularly want to totally give up cow, so I guess let it burn...
@@nickjones9867 The funny thing about the Australia situation is it showed everyone the undeniable. The fires were "irrefutable proof" of climate change. Then there were all the arson arrests. Then there was the fact that some environmentalist groups had actually hindered or fully stopped wildfire preventative measures previously. Then the heavy rainfall, which aided with the fires, was *also* "irrefutable proof" of climate change. So, to sum up, if there are wildfires like in all of history it's climate change. If it's arson, it's still climate change. If it rains, it's climate change. And if environmentalist lobbying groups actually made the situation worse instead of better, it's climate change. Riiiiiiiiight
People all over Australia have lost their houses and shit and tons of animals are dead. And the media are orgasming at the idea of using this disaster as a vehicle for their climate change agenda.
NICTATOR for all our daily outbreaks and frustrations, the closer we get to the potential consequences of our actions, the more we’ll stand up. Consider the difference in attitude if you were to remove meat from packaging to taking the knife yourself to the throat of the future making of a sandwich. It matters. We’d be less cruel if our empathy was more advanced and forward thinking but let’s work with what we got
This was excellent on multiple levels ... One learns a few things and then understands how illequiped we are for dealing with the problems we create for ourselves ...
This is fantastic, Tom. Holding a mirror up to our hypocrases, and raising awareness of some actual solutions (in their earlier stages) to climate change. All while entertaining the hell out of us. Top notch, pal.
As video maker from a very small town I absolutely love the style of these videos. Like a being behind the scenes of behind the scenes then back INTO the scene lol. Its really hard to film this way and takes so much planning so I totally tip my hat at your team!
Stonking. Thank you for making this film. We all need to look in the mirror to see what we are/aren’t doing or saying. Jonathan Pie is the perfect vehicle for us. Will be sharing far and wide! Hats off to you all 👏🏻
Truly. Pie deserve to be on stream. Not that he should, and we might be talking about capitalistic gatekeeping again but whatever. He deserves it nonetheless.
What a great tale ! We get to see both extremes and then our pretentious anti-Hero learns a lesson and starts walking a sensible 3rd route. Not for admiration or glory, but to actually do good. Absolutely lovely :)
This is just so absolutely top gear right now. I love how they purposefully screw up and act all funny to actually draw you into it. You don’t get many other countries doing it like this.
The production costs have gone up but the writing is just as good as always - perfect. More informative and funny than anything the BBC are doing about any serious issues faced today.
I...honestly felt the same way. I guess it might have to do with how the video resonated with us. It's like trying to re-stack a row of dominoes as you watch the rest of them tumbling.
Your comment reminded me of a PSA (Public Service Announcement) that used to be played on American television back in the 1970s: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uGu4AwL5Kho.html
It's futile. But that doesn't necessarily have to be depressing I think is the message. Just keep on trucking along doing your best, can't do much else.
It is futile, but Pie (as a character) is an angry man. An angry, angry man. And anger can translate into "fuck the odds" attitude - which is what I think they were going for in that ending.
Deep down his character cares, possibly too much that no matter how cynical he gets, he wants to make that difference. He's angry with the hypocrisy of it all, that's his underlying schtick - but ultimately, he does what he can, as a hypocrite himself perhaps. I think the last scene is the 'real' him (or those of us) just getting on doing what he/we can outside of doing it for the show of it. As always, hilarious but also a stark real message. Clever comedy!
Feigned generosity is better than genuine apathy. This was a surprisingly moving piece. Well done. Also, your messy hair is adorable and you're my favorite comedian.
@@Gstrangeman96 hmmmmm that's interesting, doesn't surprise me though. And it makes me sad because where I live places like these are filled in and built on as fast as possible. And then when the floods come and destroy the houses they just rebuild but put cement culverts in so the water just rushes out to sea instead of sinking into the land and keeping it hydrated. Oh well house prices are booming these days better build build build! 😑
Best thought provoking laugh I've had in quite some time. Been ages since I laughed that hard, or thought about what the fuck I can actually do to help. Thanks Pie...
Absolutely loved this, as much as I'd like to keep JP all to myself on RU-vid, but somebody needs to give him a TV show to reach the masses, he makes more bloody sense the whole of the government & BBC put together.
@@sratus No one owns any genre of comedy. Just like no one owns 'action' films. And you clearly haven't seen, or at the very least understood much Partridge if you think this is exactly the same.
Amazing video, thanks man. It hits the spot with this the most important issue of our times with some quality comedy along the way. I was particularly touched by the ending as I got a blue peter green badge about 25 yrs ago for picking up rubbish on the beach with my dad.
