Quilt as you go with scraps is an awesome way to use up those little bits but it is usually done with just straight line quilting. We can have more fun than that! Grab your free motion quilting foot and let's piece AND free motion quilt all at once! We will be free-handing some straightish lines to piece our fabric together but it doesn't have to be perfect at all--mine certainly arent!--it will all be hidden inside :)
I'm working on an APQS George which is a sit down style longarm. It functions just like a regular sewing machine set up for free motion quilting. There are no feed dogs and I'm moving the fabric all with my hands while the machine stays stationary.

I'm so thankful I found you!! 😂 I have been sewing so long, but I'm still a novice IMO. I love to quilt, but every time I try my hands at FMQ it looks like a train wreck. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Your videos are so helpful and I love the fact that you encourage practicing. I know that's what it's going to take, but sometimes you just need that person telling you something out loud before you actually feel the motivation to keep plugging at it. Thank you so much for your help. I'm now a subscriber! 🥰

Thanks for this tutorial. I’m at a place where I need to move to free motion quilting and am scared to death!!! I don’t know the settings on my machine, I don’t have the rulers, it’s all new to me. So I’m nervous. But you made it look easy and I just need TO DO IT!! Thanks again for the encouragement!!

You might want to refer to the booklet that came with your sewing machine for tips on free motion quilting. It will help you choose the right foot and show you how to attach it along with other important information. Have fun!

This was so fun to watch. The colors and free motion quilting were eye candy. And as usual you have a pleasant and calming way of teaching. I don't use coasters but what an easy way to add some color and personalization to my desk at work or sewing room.

I love quilt as you go projects. As to free motion quilting, I almost always do my own on my domestic machine - I've really perfected the "meander" but I'm not too good at anything else, but I keep trying! Once in a while if I have a really special quilt, I'll take it to a long-armer, but for economy's sake, I usually do it myself.

Great idea for using scraps and practicing free motion quilting. I think it may be a good way to make oven mits and potholders with cotton batting and thread. Maybe the heat resistant material on the back with 2 layers of thin batting. Your videos start me thinking.

What an awesome way to practice free motion quilting. Thanks for the tip. I actually don't like to free motion quilt so I do some kind of straight line because one quilt a year (in my case) doesn't give me enough practice. I've tried practicing on scraps of fabric but it seems so wasteful to me!

Or you could fold up the back to bind
@donnarehrig5808
@donnarehrig5808 2 года назад
Neat method. So how would you join the blocks for a big quilt? It would seem easier than trying to free motion with all that rolled up bulk. Thanks.
@ingquisitive

@Tiny Orchard Quilts Thank you for this video. It was very informative. The one question top of mind though is why you sewed another backing when you already had one? Could you have quilted that block without a backing, so just with the batting and tops or do you always have to have the three layers? If so, why not finish using the extra backing as the binding? It just seems a bit of a waste because the backing you used was very pretty and in the end it is hidden behind the green.
@DH-qz2so
@DH-qz2so 2 года назад
I am thinking that it was done with the extra backing because as a coaster, you may be putting a hot mug on it, so that way, you have extra 'padding' and insulation.... also, if you sewed the project as she did, with sewing off and sneaking down the sides with sewing... all of that will show on the back of the quilt project... the extra step she did with the 2nd backing, covers all the sneaking sewing/sewing off and it would not look pretty on the back!
@TinyOrchardQuilts
@TinyOrchardQuilts 2 года назад
You definitely could have left the original backing and my original plan was to make these and scrappy blocks and then join them quilt as you go style at some point when I had a pile. If you want to make a coaster and preserve the original backing, you could just bind it like a super small quilt. I opted for the extra backing option since it was easier :) if I had planned to do that from the beginning, I would have used Muslin or a random fabric I didn’t care for n
@AnitaSouthall

@@TinyOrchardQuilts at this point I nearly always use old sheets for a batting sandwich. I'm not at FMQ yet, mostly doing straight boxes or diagonal designs for hot pads but the more I create the easier it gets. I think we all figure out our preferred solutions and come up with our unique style, that's half the fun!

How do you get your fabric to move so freely whilst sewing. I have the correct mat underneath my work and it still doesn’t move as freely as yours.

QUESTION.... What machine,are you using??
@annettehillison5255
@annettehillison5255 2 года назад
Before you free motion you tacked down the second strip and when you add you third strip won't that have two lines of stitching in the back of coaster meaning doesn't that take away from the free motion in back of coaster with all the extra straight lines in the back. Make sense ? So now I watched the whole video and I guess it gets hidden with the extra backing you put on but I guess I wonder why you need another backing with all of your awesome free hand quilting.
@TinyOrchardQuilts
@TinyOrchardQuilts 2 года назад
It’s definitely not the cleanest looking back-not like a traditional custom quilting look where the back looks just as great as the front. The piecing aspect does create additional quilting lines. I generally use a thread that matches the back or a busy backing fabric. Or both!
