Got my first copy of PoC many years ago, sent it in with a purge, then found it in hardcover and still have that one! I've read at least three others in the series - once I got that there was a lot of "satire" (such as the death of Baggy Bletchley), the whole thing made more sense!

The term "Piece Of Cake" was originally expressed by the Leader of the Canadian forces involved in the Dieppe Operation. Major-General John Hamilton-Roberts had said that it would be "a piece of cake" The Canadians were slaughtered. Every year until his death in 1962, on the anniversary of the Dieppe Raid on August 19th, Hamilton-Roberts received a package containing a piece of cake.

The Dieppe fiasco taught the commonwealth how to perform an amphibious invasion properly as they learned from the mistakes. The US ignored the lessons the Canadians taught them. The German radar technology captured and examined helped bomber command protect it's bombers so in that respect Dieppe was a success.

The Buchons (D-FEHD, G-BOML and G-HUNN) were owned by Hans Dittes, Nick Grace and Charles Church respectively at the time of filming. Only D-FEHD still flies today, albeit restored as a Bf109G-10. The Grace aircraft was, as you rightly say, the aircraft in which Mark Hanna later crashed in Spain. Spitfires were AR213, MH434, MK297 (USA sequences only), ML417, NH238 and PL983.

The book is great, if you ever get a chance to read it. Only issue I had with the series is that I wish they could have devoted another one or two episodes to Battle of Britain. (Most is Battle of France of course). But then I understand they would only have had a limited budget and that would have determined how many episodes they could manage.
@rmstitanic8163
@rmstitanic8163 3 года назад
@@IbnShahid Not read the book, but I can imagine that it is a good read! I totally agree with your comment about more of the Battle of Britain. It would have been brilliant. Of course another thing that stands out is the obvious wrong Mk.Spitfires for 1940 . But that is being picky. I love the Spitfire , and it is brilliant that in the Piece of Cake series that they used real Spitfires instead of opting for CGI . Even the Static ones on the ground to make up the numbers were great!

But Moggy was an absolute - well, I can't type the word, because it's very rude, but he was one. If any single character in the story (book, at least,) deserved to die, it was Moggy. he didn't care about anyone, to an abusive degree, and he got Dicky Starr killed in France.

I only watched this RU-vid clip because the name reminded me of one of the best paperback novels I ever borrowed from my highschool library. It was named "piece of cake" For the life of me I couldn't understand why the book was so unpopular, infact I was the first to read it in almost 40 years since the previous burrower. It was a marvelous piece of work, the dogfighting, the ground action, the planning, feeling each and every pilot's emotions and so much more, It quite literally fueled my interest into WW2 era aviation history. Now I hear it has a series in it's honour, I'm thrilled, I know what I'm going to be watching when I'm done with my exams Thank you 😂

All "Heinkel" formation scenes in "Piece of Cake" were borrowed from "Battle of Britain" film. And, yes, they were actually Spanish C.A.S.A 2111's with Merlin engines. There was one scene with a single "Heinkel" and a Spitfire filmed for "P o C" in USA, using Confederate Air Forces C.A.S.A.
@AbelMcTalisker
@AbelMcTalisker 2 года назад
As a postcript to that, restorers working on a Spanish CASA 2111 now in a museum that was probably in the film found it to be actually an original German airframe, sold to the Spanish as a pattern aircraft.

What are you talking about? I have recently watched the entire series of, 'Piece Of Cake,' and there is no such scene in it. You are confusing the 1969 film, 'The Battle Of Britain.' It wasn't Christmas dinner either- the Battle Of Britain occurred between July and early October 1940!!! The scene you refer to involved Luftwaffe pilots sitting down to eat at their mess.

Ya know, this is probably my most favorite flying movie. The music is superb, the characters are very believable and the flying is, at the worst, pretty decent. True, it used too many old scenes from the Battle of Britain movie but it also had some new stuff shot just for the series. Personally, I wish they'd redo some of the flying scenes (like when they constantly show the model of the Stuka exploding.....cheap, cheap....) and then it would be a true, true winner! Great series. I bought it and would buy it again if they'd redo some of those flying scenes. PS - I really hated it that Moggy and Hart die.

I have some magazines listing all of the Spitfires and HA-1112's used in both Battle of Britain and Piece of Cake, unfortunately stored somewhere. Anyhow, the 2 seat HA-1112 was not in P o C. One of them was owned by a German (Dittmer, if I remember it right), one by the Old Flying Machines Company and one by Nick Grace. All three had been in B o B. The German plane had restored elliptical wingtips (they were cut for B o B). The OFMC's plane crashed some years later, killing Mark Hannah.

The type has a reputation for tricky ground handling, something the Bf109 family was afflicted with throughout its history, due to factors of engine torque and undercarriage layout, among other things. Most have been damaged in ground-loops. Thankfully there hasn't been any in a good long while, and the airworthy Buchon population remains pretty stable!

@oliverrobertson1123
@oliverrobertson1123 8 лет назад
The reason for this is, when they were making the Battle of Britain film, there was only one airworthy Ju87 Stuka, which they borrowed from The RAF Museum in London. In Piece of cake, they didn't want to destroy the original aircraft, although they did a few explosion scenes with a He111. In the Battle of Britain film, they used little models to do the explosions.
@YDDES
@YDDES 7 лет назад
In "Battle of Britain" they never showed the real Stuka, not even in ground shots. RAF got cold feet and denied "Spitfire Productions" to restore the Stuka to airworthy condition and fly it, sice there are only 2 Stukas left in the world. One in Britain, one in USA.

You can tell this was produced back in the day when we treasured our past, and the sacrifices made by those who were caught up in the horror. A modern remake would have disabled black lesbians pilotting hornets fighters.

During the Battle of Britain, they used spitfire MkI/MkIIs and they did not have 4 blade propellers, and the spitfires in this movie has 4 blade propellers. Supposedly converted from a MK9?

I'm also pretty sure that C wings (with the cannons) were post BOB. In his book about the war, Bob Tuck recounts an argument with Doug Bader in front of Dowding (or maybe Leigh-Mallory?) - Bader wanted to stay with pure Brownings, while Tuck was in favour of adding the cannons for more punch. Bader couldn't conceive of anyone actually disagreeing with him... but back to point: no Spitfires with cannons flew in the BoB, as far as I have ever been able to read.

@@srgmiller340 At the time of filming, there were only three airworthy Hurricanes , two with the RAF and one in Canada, and the RAF were unlikely to hire their two out for filming. Even getting the five airworthy Spits was a huge challenge back then, with far less airworthy Spits than todays healthy numbers.

Loved the book. Wasnt happy when the series killed off CH3, because, reasons...?
@raymondyee2008
@raymondyee2008 3 года назад
I think the answer to that is the people behind this six part miniseries had no plans to produce the sequel ("A Good Clean Fight" which involved the P-40s in North Africa) so they decided to alter the story the way they felt best (even if CH3 or "Hart" was killed off at 03:16).

@IbnShahid
@IbnShahid 3 года назад
All kinds of reasons really. Skill, bravery and leadership of the RAF, the major obstacle posed by the English Channel and the formidable Royal Navy, German lack of preparedness for an amphibious landing of the scale needed to conquer Britain, Hitler getting distracted, first by wanting to bomb cities instead of wiping out the RAF’s fighters, then by wanting to invade the Soviet Union. Those are just some of the key factors, but there were other reasons too.

Great series for its time on a TV budget, nit picking about the wrong details is stupidity, they had to use what was available. There were still a few Battle of Britain pilots around when this was made and they weren't too happy how some of the pilots were portrayed, warts and all. I read the book which was very good, but it exagerated some of the pilots bad characteristics for dramatic effect.
