You'd think after losing it once people would be a little more careful about backing it up a second time.

The German dub of "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" was considered lost media for a while until a rather fuzzy sounding but decent quality VHS copy surfaced in 2016 and uploaded to RU-vid (in Europe, the pre-2010s Charlie Brown specials didn't get region blocked back then). It stayed on RU-vid for two years, amassing around 150,000 views until the uploader took it down themselves for a really stupid reason: He didn't like how the only publicly available copy of the dub was a 480p VHS copy with fuzzy audio... I mean, it's better than nothing, right? Nobody had a copy saved and the dub once again became lost media, with all efforts to track down different copies failing and being abandoned by early 2020. Thankfully, a good quality copy resurfaced in November of 2021. What's also odd is that two months after it resurfaced, it aired on TV for the first time since 2009.

Maybe someone seeing the TV listing saying it'll be aired spurred them to Google it snd they saw it was lost - or an article came out saying it'll be aired and is considered lost? Or it could just be a weird coincidence

Reminds of a similar issue, there's a Spanish dub made in Mexico for the Latin-America audience for a 90s Disney cartoon called "Jungle Cubs" which served as a prequel to the Jungle Book movie. in the Mexican Spanish dub, it's known as "The Jungle Booklet". Unlike the Castillian, French, German dubs, etc all which are available on dvd releases, the Mexican dub was never re-released or re-purposed for dvd sales. This means that the only way you could watch it was if you still had a copy of the VHS tapes. There have been uploads of this Mexican dub but they're usually recorded with a camera/cam-corder so the quality is faulty at best. So, unless Disney + decides to make this cartoon available and included the Mexican Spanish dub, or unless someone who's savy enough to properly VHS-Rip the tape (or even a TV-rip) unto a computer; getting a good quality if not HD version of the Mexican dub right now is going to be near impossible, and ALL episodes of this dub won't properly resurface anytime soon.

Here in Brazil the very same thing happened, pretty much a lot of old dubs of Charlie Brown were available on youtube throughout the 2010s, until around 2018/2019 they began to be blocked, and now we can't watch them anywhere. I am aware that some people still have them saved but they either don't upload it to other sites, or they do but said site blocks it too after like, a day.

Lost media archives usually are better than RU-vid. You don't have to have major currupt corporations pulling a dmca take down on a piece of lost media found, causing it to get lost again. Or just make Cartoon Network and other channels put the lost episodes from they're channel on they're websight wich is harder. Preservation is key.

Yeah honestly I’m surprised. Sega and their affiliates have plenty of characters they could use as a vtuber for promotional reasons. Sophie from Persona 5 Strikers also come to mind, since Atlus is a part of Sega. In fact I think Atlus did something similar for the reveal of Soul Hackers 2, though not sure if that counts. The whole vtuber thing makes it shockingly easy for companies to bring their characters to life as if they actually worked for them. It’s kinda amazing.

The fact that lost media being found and then lost again is such a common occurrence just goes to show that if there's a video, image, or what have you that you like be sure to save it. And don't just keep it in one place. You should always have 3 or more back-ups if it's something you find really important. One copy on physical storage that you will always remember the location of, one copy stored off-site for safe keeping in case of a fire or other disaster, and one stored on a digital archive like the Internet Archive. Give a physical copy to a friend or family member if you really want to be safe. Just because something is on RU-vid or Google Drive doesn't mean it'll be available forever, so keep your links safe but your data closer.

Viacom has a history of taking EVERYTHING down. Even if it's just something with one of their network screenbugs on it. This was a BIG problem for the Classic Sesame Street preservationists in the earlier YT days, as clips from Noggin were subject to the big take down. Things like The City Gone Wild make me realize how much we take the media we have today for granted. All the films made today are preserved in a digital format, so they can always be preserved. Aside from that, we have internet, streaming, and home video to watch our favorite movies and shows at anytime. When films first began, and even during it's Golden Age, films were like performances: fleeting. Rarely would any footage stand the test of time. People can work as hard they can to retrieve them, but it's safe to say that not all lost media can be found. I also don't understand why Warburton couldn't get permission to make Operation: TREE. Isn't parody under fair use, regardless?

The original silent Gatsby is another interesting one. I bring it up since you showed it in your video. My dad's english professor in college (who was like 70+ yrs old in the late 1970s) said he saw it in the theater and that it was bad. It focused heavily on the flashier parts of the book like the parties and sidelined the story. There was a copy rumored to be in Moscow, but it has never resurfaced, only the trailer (which you showed). So many of those silent movies have missing cuts (for censorship reasons) or are missing all together. Of the silent era we have maybe like 10-20% of them (if that)

It's always important to remember that 99.9% of corporations don't care about a preserving media only making a buck and holding on with a death grip onto copyrighted/trademarked media. Which is to say nothing of the problematic stuff that they would rather bury for obvious reasons. At the time CDs were still the rage and people were like no, that’s not going to degrade like books and stuff. But here we are. Books, films, music, and a lot of other things are just gone because the hard copies are destroyed. Even streaming has this issue because if a server and backup fail it’s gone forever.

This is pretty small compared to other stuff out there, but three music remix stuff that always stuck out to me after listening to them for so long years ago only for the channels/videos to disappear, was a Dracula9AntiChapel remix of Castlevania's Bloody Tears in MMX2 and Z4 style, a remix of Sonic Advance 2's True Area 53 by WitchChao, and the entire SYNTHLORD channel, which always made cool TEKKEN remixes. Of all these three, I only managed to get a small bunch of Synthlord previously lost remixes as I found someone's video with them on a Tag 2 playlist and asked him to reupload those songs since they were gone (thank you FightersLegend, you're truly a legend), but Dracula9, while mentioned keeping the old project files in case someone wanted, hasn't brought it up again when I asked him about that missing upload (since he took it down due to "not being up to his quality standards today" or something like that), and that one WitchChao remix seems outright lost in time as there's not a single mention of it surviving anywhere as the remixer also disappeared and only a few other remixes from it were reuploaded. ...so yeah, even your favorite remixes of video game music you can hear for hours and days can end up just...disappearing overnight, with a chance that you might not ever hear them again...

You know what sucks about lost media locked behind a password? Be it fan made or official? There's a high chance it can't be recovered because it was probably tied to either a video or a website or in the case of 3D fan models, originally was free to use on common Japanese websites like NicoNico but eventually became impossible to use due to either needing a password or even a password *plus* money to access. Touhou, despite what many think, is still a *very* small and niche series that has a *very* dedicated fanbase. 'Cause when new characters get revealed you can bet the fans are going to make a 3D model of those characters and there's going to be *tons* of fanart for said characters. Lucille made three models for the Touhou community, one of Marisa Kirisame (which is *very* recognizable and well known thanks to the semi-fingerless gloves on Marisa's hands), one of Patchouli Knowledge and one of Hong Meiling. Both Marisa and Patchouli have been found and archived (and I also have the .zip files for both models) which also includes an earlier version of their Patchouli model (which I also have the .zip file for) but even to this day no-one has found Lucille's Meiling model. Unfortunately at some point Lucille went and put their Twitter profile into protected mode which means no-one can view how they've been and what they've been doing. Lucille's Marisa model was made back in November 28th, 2009. Patchouli's model was first made in June 9th, 2009 but then was deleted and remade in August 23rd, 2011, AND FOR GOOD REASON. The original model is *very* unnerving to look at compared to the remade model having a face that looks like it came from LSD Dream Emulator while the rest of the model looked *very* basic. Unfortunately we don't know *anything* about Lucille's Meiling model, there's a high chance it was made the same year as the other two models as the first known image of Lucille's Meiling model is on their old Pixiv account has an image upload on July 2, 2009 at 12:32 PM. There's also an image of the model itself included with the files for Marisa's model, but until we can get the model itself (as well as any other models they've made.) the collection of models they've made for MMD is pretty much incomplete unless stated otherwise.

@@auqustfire Well there's that and the original creators either putting a password or a paywall in front of their models. Passwords are easy to obtain, they're either in the NicoNico video description featuring the model itself or in the url of the page the model is hosted one. But getting the necessary funds to pay to use a model is a real pain in the butt for folks outside of Japan. Either way, unless someone has the models already and is willing to give them, it's near impossible to obtain models from the original creators that are either gone for good or locked behind a password that isn't easy to find anymore. I guess the same could also be said for fanart given that unless there's an archive on sites like Danbooru or Gelbooru or even Archive.org's image archive or someone has it downloaded there's a high chance it's been wiped from the face of the Earth.

They were up on daily motion and YT since around 2016 and have stayed up for quite a long time. That is until Turner took down every single one. Now they’re all lost except for the episode “Opposite Day” which has been reuploaded thanks to Gary21115(RIP)

Something like this happened to me with a personal piece of (now) lost media... there was a policy trailer at a local theater I used to go to that I had memorized word for word. They'd uploaded it to their RU-vid channel and I had it saved to my favorites, but I never thought to actually save the video to my computer- and a few months ago they put it on private. I keep trying to contact them to ask about restoring it but I don't think it's anyone's top priority, haha. Back up your stuff!

I vividly remember AKA Cult Cartoons, it used to air on late nights on Cartoon Network back in my country (Portugal) It brings back so much memories and the funny thing is it sorta introduced to me about hiphop and turntablism (art of mixing with record turntables) since it was a "gag" between switching on cartoon episodes. I remember a youtube video that actually had a 20 minute piece from one of the episodes but after searching it seemed that it was either taking down by copyright or deleted unfortunately. AKA was probably one of the best video editing by any form of media before the internet or even youtube got popular!

See, the thing about saving every media that is interesting to you is you risk becoming like that lady who saved literally decades of vhs recordings of multiple television channels to the point it would not only be impossible to watch them all, the hoarding literally pushed her out of her house. I forget if by the time the Hoarders show got to her she was living in a corner of her kitchen, still adding to the ‘collection,’ or if she had moved into either a shed or trailer next to her full house. (Though I did think it was a shame they didn’t offer them to some sort of archivist, y’know, just in case.) Though at least now I can just use thumb drives to save stuff and not have stacks of cds cluttering my shelves.

Unfortunately a lot of lost media is lost again due to copyright, understandable, but at the same time, if you're not going to make it available to everyone through some means, be it paywalled, or on a physical release, or whatever... why bother? There are so many shows and movies that are coming out now and have been out for some time (Phineas and Ferb being the example I'm mad at Disney for, for never releasing the full series on a non digital format) that are digital only. Not everything is popular either, so it really does depend on the magnitude of how far something spreads. There's a bunch of Flash stuff that is lost as well. Unfortunately.

This really is a good example of why you should archive stuff. I actually have a lost media story that's about this kind of topic. You see, back in 2018, I was actually pretty good at archiving stuff. I would always download stuff on the school computer, and when the school year was over, I archived everything I downloaded onto OneDrive (Including the videos I'm about to talk about!) But there was one thing that I didn't archive correctly... Around September of 2018, I found these funny "Kirby Right Back at Ya" dubs in a RU-vid playlist. I LOVED them. I thought they were the funniest videos ever back then. Now luckily, I knew about Viacom's wrath of terror back then. So, knowing these dubs would be gone at some point, I went through the effort to archive all of them, and the rest is history. Actually, I lied because I made ONE terrible mistake when archiving them. I didn't really know about lost media at the time. So, while I did archive the dubs, my goofy ahh 💀 decided to only archive my FAVORITE dubs. Didn't even think about the other ones. Sadly, I didn't even realize this until I found out about lost media. And at that point, the dubs were LONG gone. Realizing this, I decided to upload these archived dubs to the Internet Archive. I archived the dubs on 9/25/2018 and uploaded them on 5/6/2020. You can watch them on Internet Archive by searching up my account name (NovaXS) and going to my uploads. I would put a link, but RU-vid doesn't seem to like links in comments. At this point, I didn't even remember who made them and I was hoping whoever made it would find the archives so I could credit him and hope that he reuploads all the dubs onto Internet Archive (i think it's pretty obviously how that turned out) So here I am, another 2 years later telling this story. At this point, I'm 99% sure the rest of the dubs are gone for good. I don't remember how many were available and I don't even remember who made it or when the dubs were even made. Considering how it's been 4 years since I found the dubs, I'd have to assume that even if I knew the creator, the rest of the dubs are probably on a hard drive that has been sold at some garage sale or destroyed. Not to also mention that these videos weren't very popular, most likely gaining around 500 to 1,000 views, so there's probably no other archives of the dubs. If ANYONE has any possible archives of the rest of the dubs, please let me know. Anyways that's my lost media story, sorry if it was pretty long.

Well before I'd even heard of lost media I was recording TV shows and commercials. I grew up in the days right before DVR so I learned how to use the VHS recorder. Little 6-9 year old me was scared one day they'd be gone, and boy was I right. I'd archived loads of Nick Jr's Face, including his final appearance and bumpers where Moose and Zee were introduced. My biological dad has them all now and I've been desperately trying to get my hands on them! I asked for "tapes" and he gave me a camcorder with a bunch of old family videos. Not what I was looking for but I'm still grateful. Hopefully I get them back someday, a mom messaged me about them and I was hoping to swoop in ages later with good news. 😰

The Space Channel 5 thing has a wrinkle that makes sense. Sega was actually sued by a woman named Kier Kirby, who had performed with a band called Dee-Lites who made a hit called "Groove Is In The Heart", and who claimed that the character of Ulala was based on her. Luckily, Sega won the lawsuit in 2007, probably helped by the increased popularity of anime in the United States meaning that people could find the anime art style that inspired Space Channel 5 more.

The comment about interational content being lost more or having less interest just made me think of an old show here in the UK on Jetix called PXG. PXG was a video game based show that acted as a sort of video game news report and reviee type of deal back in the mid 2000's. It was hosted by a Japanese guy named Kentaro and a CGI robotic girl in an anime style who's name escapes me. The show would give descriptions of the newest games that were coming out, featured reviews with scores out of 10 for games the creators had played and I vaguely remember a sort of cheat code segment where Kentaro would tell the viewer how to do certaon cheat codes in video games to help them out or just for fun. I distinctly remember this show being my first exposure to any kind of news about Kingdom Hearts 2 waaaaay back in 2005 as I was a massive fan of Kingdom Hearts 1 ad Chain of Memories. Like I can picture in my head the standard show borders around ths clips of KH2 which showed off Auron from FFX fighting Cerberus and just being super excited as a kid. Nowadays I don't think the show has had any kind of DVD release and I think Disney basically got rid of any archive footage for it after they replaced Jetix for Disney XD.

I want to find a short I saw when I was a kid in late 90's early 00's. I watched it on a channel called LOCOMOTION (I don't know if it was a channel just here in Latin America or if it was an international version of other network). That channel used to stream content mostly for young adults. There was a segment that aired mostly near midnight called LOCOTOMIA that showed short films and animations. The short I'm talking about was in "clay motion" (it reminds me now that chicken movie made in this format) and I recall it was about a society in which everyone does what they're supposed to: everyone goes to work at the same place, everyone goes shopping at the same place, etc. At some point the main character notices a window and is unable to see what's "outside". After various days of walking by that window with the rest of the people at the same time, the main character takes a peek out of that window and goes through it and ends up "outside" where there's a beautiful sight of a sky full of stars. Then he looks back at the window and sees how all the people inside goes from one side to another at the same time and at the same rhythm. The short ends here. The whole short had no dialog, only sound effects when needed, like people walking, working and being at home. I remember being a kid and thinking that some of the shorts that aired in that segment (LOCOTOMIA) used to be so long but I guess that being a kid enjoying some TV made me think they were long. I remember this short in particular because it meant so much to me at a young age to get a message like that: DARE TO GO OUTSIDE. It defined my way of thinking from there to the present day and I will carry that message with me for the rest of my life.

One piece of lost media that was briefly uncovered that I'd love to see again: You may have heard of an urban legend about "Well to Hell". Supposedly, a Soviet research team drilled far deeper through Earth's crust than anyone had ever done, and lowered a microphone down the hole. They captured some screams of the damned. (It vaguely references a real experiment, the Kola Superdeep Borehole. Real thing, though they never recorded anything of this nature, of course.) This tall tale was popularised in some American publications. However, when people started tracking this thing down through the chain of citations, they eventually followed the trail to some really small American Christian publications which ultimately got the original story from really freaking obscure Finnish Christian and New Age publications. And at some point, someone produced an actual scan of the first known instance of the story! ...hosted in a university student's web page in a "temporary" folder. And nobody bothered to make a copy, dammit. Well, hopefully those newsletters still sit in some library somewhere, but someone needs to repeat a whole bunch of legwork.

And not to mention the whole thing with video game collectors, they buy something that the people are looking at and wants preserved, and it disappears forever into someone's private collection. And it's even worse if it's something like a N64 development cartridge, because if I recall correctly, they have a habit of erasing themselves, so dumping them is even more important, it's a nightmare to think about how much data has been lost forever this way

From what I've seen, the entire third season of that dub was apparently released online back in 2019 before being taken down, and only several episodes of it were archived and uploaded to The Internet Archive. I even saw a Reddit post from 2020 that mentioned there were episodes "104 onwards", implying episode 104, which isn't on The Internet Archive, existed online at some point, as well as probably episodes following after it. Basically, it was found, and then lost again, and only a few of them managed to survive.

RIP girls just wanna have fun and santa baby- covers by bulldog eyes. i really miss those songs. if i ever see em again, theyre getting downloaded and put on my 5 flash drives. maybe someday theyll reappear..

A few years ago I tried finding a commercial that aired on TV about a video game rental service IIRC, I remember it distinctly started with Sonic the Hedgehog 1 running into spikes while a pitched-up version of "Stayin' Alive" played, them zoomed back to other video game death screens or characters getting hurt in gameplay. I found it once when appealing to a Facebook group, someone linked it from a site off of RU-vid. Unfortunately the group was lost and so was my link for the commercial. I wish I had more details for it again.

Man, Paramount throwing that film away hurts. I get why they did it; nitrate film had a tendency to burst into flame once it started to decompose, but, still, it HURTS.

There is actually a piece of media I consider lost that I've been unable to find in my unprofessional searches. There is a song called Quite Spectacular by the musician Hint, and there used to be a music video for it on youtube I believe uploaded by Hint itself. It was almost like an animatic or slideshow drawn in traditional media (colored pencils and the like) starring a knight that tries to save his village from a dragon, but ends up messing it up. I have no idea why he took it down but I've been unable to find the video since. I know the second it is found, if it is, im going to download it and never let it go.

Apparently _AKA Cult Toons_ also has some non-Hanna-Barbera animated show clips. I saw a couple of frames from _Freakazoid_ and _Foghorn Leghorn_ thrown in there in this video.

It feels so weird that lost media can be lost again. It feels like when Scrat from ice age finally has the nut but then he loses it again.

I believe Space Channel 5 was sued because of the likeness to a 90's one hit wonder pop singer named Dee-Lite. Not sure that's spelled right but I remember reading about that in 2005 in a video game magazine.

wouldn’t you think that once lost media is found people would take more precautions in backing it up and saving it in several places to fall back too if something were to happen again.

Don't upload Lost Media to RU-vid! Like NEVER! Videos get taken down constantly, it's not a safe site at all! When do people learn this? :(

@Mister Metokur That's good to know, hopefully they can get the game archived again.

@Digi Data I ran their website through a translator at the time, they had a post explaining that they were threatened by the Korean equivalent of a copyright lawyer over one of they games they uploaded, and they password locked the rest out of understandable fear.

It seems very worthless how they copyright claim any media that cannot be found easily

The idea of silent movies being lost makes me so sad. My dad and I used to watch a bunch of Keaton, Lloyd, and Arbuckle films so I have a lot of nostalgia for them. It’s weird in a sense to watch something from 100 years ago, before the Depression, before WWII… so much history.

The film stock used during the silent era releases highly flammable gases when it decomposes. That’s one of the reasons why so many silent films were destroyed in film vault fires. That being said, I don’t understand why they wouldn’t try to transfer this film to safety film stock or do something to try to preserve it.
