Mike Cave and myself travel down to Portland in the hope of catching some wrasse but the weather is against us and we need to rethink for somewhere more sheltered. We decide on Swanage Pier which had the added bonus of a cafe and parking. After parking right there on the pier and tucking into a full English breakfast we set to work with the LRF gear.
With rods jangling and a constant stream of fish of all different varieties we soon start to see amazing creatures of many bright and amazing colours. it is truly an aquarium down there.

If you are using light enough gear the takes and rod knocks are amazing. Very addictive. 🎣

Bravo. More of this Mark. It's a different branch of sea angling and superb way to bring youngsters into fishing and an interest in the wider marine environment. I'm sure there's thousands of us journeymen sea anglers that haven't much of a clue about these mini or juvenile species and what a great way to relax at a pier or jetty at the Great British Seaside. Cafe... .did someone mention a cafe 😂

It is already on my list of venues to return to before the summer crowds get too busy. Nice cooked breakfast and a few hours on the mini species before ending up chasing garfish under a float. There will be other videos similar but from different venues this year.

It made me feel like a kid again and proves it doesn’t have to all be about bigger and better. If you scale everything down the thrill is the same. 🎣

The Ballan Wrasse was a Corkwing Wrasse, and the Goby was a Tompot Blenny. Glad to see a traditional angler so excited by LRF :)

Thank you for the corrections, the mini species are far from my usual catch. Using the light kit and catching the smaller stuff gives the same interaction only scaled down, what’s not to love. 🎣

the fish shown on 5.27 was a male corkwing wrasse, it had green wavy lines on its face.😁.. nice to see you doing a bit of lrf, my fav style and lots of fun.

Hello, Mark from across the pond! Just subscribed because I think you are the most unpretentious LRFer out there. I'm doing same here as you described and some online snobbies think I'm using bait is not LRF, like I care what they think. You sir proofs having fun fishing ALL that matters. Thumbs up!

Small hooks for the small species but they were also float fishing for Garfish. Baits were suspended about 9’ below the float and a very slow retrieve.

It is loads of fun and with a light rod and line the bites look really aggressive. Have a play, you won’t regret it.

@@seaangling Hope so Mark. I don't tend to see young ones now like I did years ago. Mind you, a lot of the lads I used to fish with up here in the NE, have packed in, or gone puddle chucking. It's getting dire up here.

@alanevans4232
@alanevans4232 Год назад
@@seaangling Hi Mark, glad to help if I can, some simple I.D. tactics, a Blenny has a continuous dorsal fin, a Goby has a split Dorsal fin, A Tompot has "eyebrows" and a Tompot without "eyebrows " is a Shanny/Common Blenny, couldn't see what Gobies you had but, your Wrasse I.D was pretty good apart from the "female" sandy coloured one, that had a faint black spot (I think) on top by the tail fin and makes it a Goldsinny Wrasse. hope this helps. I shall PM you soon.
@alanevans4232

Sorry Mark just had another look and, what I thought was a Goldsinny is in fact a Baillons Wrasse, my bad.
