Boulez is an exceptionally precise conductor. Nothing vague. Great sizzle from the bass trombone at the end of the Firebird.

Целую ручки фрау Шафер. Безупречный вокал. Надеюсь, она в добром здравии. Но кто же вместо нее будет исполнять современную музыку? В европе точно никого, надобно в России поискать.

With all due respect to the Berlin Phil of the 1960's, I think this was the best quartet of principal woodwinds ever assembled: Mathieu Dufour, Alex Klein, Larry Combs, and David McGill

Funny you should say that. While I'm not as familiar with the CSO's winds lineup, whenever I'm listening, I've always considered it the BP's top competitor.

Was the first trombone missing on some parts in the last movement? The beginning passage only Mulcahy was playing and the first plays an octave higher. Also, in the middle there are some glissandos IIRC. Havent played this since high school.

Stravinsky edited The Firebird several times. This performance of the original ballet music lacks some of the trombone parts added in the 1919 edit that was part of Disney's Fantasia.

I was there, it was the Triennale 2000, in that season all the famous orchestra's performed in Cologne, CSO even did 2 programms, one with Boulez and one with Barenboim. I think even for such a festival, it was too much for the audiences. I saw in that season from april till june: WPh/Previn, WDR/Bychkov, BPh/Abbado, NYPh/Masur(also 2 programms: Mahler9 and Shos7), CSO/Barenboim/Boulez, SFS/MTT, Boston/Osawa (also 2 programms (Turangalila and Mahler2), Cleveland/Dohnanyi, Philadelphia/Sawallisch.

It makes total sense. The prices are at least 4 times as high as they during a normal concert when the local Cologne Orchestra is playing.
@packer812
@packer812 4 года назад
High prices and and a non appealing program? If they had thrown in some Mozart and ditched the Lulu peace, people probably would have been more willing to pay the high prices.
