On the first of October 1995 Pierre Boulez conducted Het Nieuw Ensemble, in our tv studio De Plantage in Amsterdam near Artis. Remembering Boulez staring out of the window with a big smile on his face. Then he turned to the host of the programma and said: “you should make a programme in the Amsterdam Royal Zoo”. Boulez was one of the most humble persons we ever met. It was amazing that he had made time to speak and conduct in our programme, because he was rehearsing Moses and Aron by Arnold Schoenberg at the Dutch Opera.
Eleven years after the premiere in London he conducted his composition Dérive I in our studio on sunday morning. It is hard to imagine contemporary music of the past century without Boulez (1925-2016) and the institutions that he founded or co-founded. We acknowledge him today as a composer and conductor, but he often also wore the hats of administrator, activist, advocate and pedagogue. for many years.
