Some downright astounding playing there from M. Vichard. I wonder how many flutists would like to play this piece, but don't have access to a pianist who can handle it?
The funny thing is that technically it's not so hard - it just requires long stretches of deciding which hand goes where and practising the muscle motions to reach for those notes. Nothing in Boulez is harder than Messiaen, and yet pianists reach for Messiaen all the time...
This was originally intended to be performed by JP Rampal whom I befriended in the mid 70's. The piece originally didn't even have bar lines. Rampal called Boulez requesting the bar lines. Even though Boulez grudgingly added the bars, Rampal never played Boulez's "sonatine". Some years later I asked Rampal if he had performed it by any chance. His answer was: "c'est une merde inutile" I personally think he was right. Congrats to the players!!
