Sure, they might have big income in one year, but that doesn’t mean they are generally very wealthy. A small business owner might well work for years to establish his or her business, barely subsisting for years because they are re-investing in the business. Finally, they get an attractive offer and sell it. It doesn’t take much any more when selling a going concern to sell it for over the threshold for the tax. So the person who toiled and strained to get the business going and living hand-to-mouth waiting for their time, now gets that time stolen by the CRA.

So when she and Poilièvre got married, the first inclination was to sell it and pay off some of the mortgage on the family home, or invest it for retirement, or whatever.
