Pigeons Nesting in Our Garden

Please excuse the 'louder than I would like' music I have had to swap in a couple of places, meaning I have lost any ambient audio that was originally present.
The 'Royalty Free' music I originally used has now been claimed back by the composer.
It's annoying when this happens but it does occasionally.
Fair play to the composer. Just wish, if they're going to offer their music 'Royalty Free' they give it some thought first.
After the event can cause a few problems to any that have used it.
A couple of pigeons choose to build a nest in a tree in our garden during my fortnight summer holiday - so I was able to capture some video.

Wood pigeons like these have their own traits compared to standard rock pigeons. Rock pigeons, like the ones that we see everyday, have a gorgeous iridescent on their neck. These pigeons don't, however they make up for that by having nice colors on their plumage. Wood pigeons are wild, however, so you should cherish them! :)

I do. Pigeons nest here most years, at least once, and in the conifer next to this tree - and in a tree in the front garden.

@@steverg1st there is some sticks! They came like 3 days ago. I saw the male bring sticks. They usually fly away for the night at 4 pm and come back in the morning at 9 am. Also got some footage of the male bringing sticks! Once the nest is finished ill upload the video.

@@steverg1st Steve, i have a question. I accidentally scared a pigeon ( Rock Pigeon, Maybe Dad or Mom Pigeon) while (i think) it was flying to my balcony. Will it come back? Also the nest is getting bigger. The pigeon has not been on my balcony for like 1 and a half hours. Thanks!

We should never shoo away pigeons or doves when they come looking for shelter. They are not native to North America - they were stolen from their natural homes on the cliffs of Europe by people and brought here in cages. So it's harder for them to survive compared to native birds. Food is also very difficult for them. That's why I've started feeding them. I encourage everybody else to do the same. They eat regular wild bird seed, as well as grains like corn and split peas. You can also buy pigeon food at most pet stores. I love them - they are beautiful!

I didn’t usually and I don’t at all now. At the time I didn’t realise they were nesting. Once I did, as you can see, I encouraged it. Thanks for watching 😊

Hi Steve! Its me again, quick question and a update. So i saw more frequent stick transport, and i went out to the balcony to see the nest. It was good and almost done. So heres the question, Will the pigeons ( they are rock pigeons ) come back after i accidentally scared one. I went out and i saw a pigeon fly to my balcony i think. Will it come back? I really want it to come back. Does it take time for it to come back? Also another update. I saw preening. They both preened their feathers and cuddled. Is it a sign? Thanks alot! Ill be keeping you updated!
@steverg1st
@steverg1st 4 года назад
Sorry! Only just seen this - and, obviously, your query has answered itself. I never saw any sign of cuddling between our pigeons, so that's a good one. They mate for life and often use the same nest for future broods so, as long as there's no major disturbance, they would not normally be scared off from the current nest and will quite likely return later this year for a second lay. Possibly next season too - so don't disturb the nest when they've left. They'll do any necessary repairs if they come back.

@@steverg1st i did not touch anything. Thanks! Also the female layed her 2nd egg so im being careful not to disturb them
@Crazybob07
@Crazybob07 3 года назад
I appreciate them as birds and like watching them sometimes but not on my property again. Once you let them nest once they and their offspring will stay and return to that spot indefinitely. They will always try nest close to a easy food source. Destroyed my garden with guano which is unhygienic for many reasons and can lead to mites so i had to get rid. Id just be careful where they are allowed nest.

Get rid of what? The nest? If so that's very much against the law. It's illegal to disturb nesting birds in the UK.

Juli AJ They usually lay eggs all together 1-3 and will do shifts for incubation - female at night 8pm - 10am approx, then male takes over. They won’t normally leave them unattended. They’ll do a swift band over, initially at least.
