Filmed in 5 foot of water using a WaterWolf V 1.1
After positioning the camera close to the near bank I dropped a live dace in using a paternoster rig.
The bait was immediately taken by a small pike.
The water was very clear, and I could see everything that was happening. This is why I did not strike immediately as I could see the pike was just holding the bait and did not have the hooks in its mouth. After the first strike the pike released the bait, but came back and took it again.
Never neglect the near bank, and if you miss a take, always put the bait straight back as the pike my take it again!

How do you catch your livebait? Even beter how do you keep them alive longer than a day??

I catch them using float fished maggots on the same river that I fish for the pike. I only keep them for the day, in a small net in the river, and release any that I don't use at the end of the day.

I had a problem today that I never had before. Something kept biting my live minnows in half. I tried hooking the minnow in the tail, in the back and in the lips all with the same outcome. Bobber wouldn't do what a pike normally does for me. The bobber would just jump around maybe take off for 10 feet so I try to set the hook and end up with half a minnow. Any suggestions? I'm also thinking it might be a pickerel or a long nose gar instead of a pike. I'm not 100% sure but that's the only explanation I have.

Hi Steve, we don't have longnose gar or pickerel here in the UK, so it's difficult for me to comment if what you are experiencing is from those species. It could be from a smaller pike, or maybe a perch, that is just grabbing your minnow by the tail and running with it without taking the bait deep inside it's mouth?

The Pikester that's true it could be. So if it is a small pike or a perch should I just use a smaller minnow?
