My Dad was from Littleton, south of Denver. When we went to visit his family back in the 50's and 60's we were always going to go to the top of Pikes Peak. I still haven't been there. I still want to go but your very nice video will have to do for the present.
You make some of the coolest videos with the most amazing view points and not to mention the history behind what you're filming. Awesome work, keep it up!
Brian, I'm blown away by this. I'm also p*ssed that I was in Colorado last month and opted to re-visit Mt Evans instead of Pike's Peak. Perfect weather and perfect video. I will be going back...
Mandatory brake check station, wheres the fun in that, haha Looks like a great drive, we have nothing like that here, well as high but we dont have brake stops either. Thanks for putting this up, love your work mate.
Thanks for nice video clip. Do not pay attention to peeps that dislike video, or comments that suggest some editing or improvement. You did one of hell, fantastic, job recording video and commenting. Thanks again.
Wow dude, this is pretty gnarly, to say the least. I honestly don't see myself ever driving this, as it simply dead ends, but this is definitely a fascinating drive. I'd probably stick to the speed limit on this one, seeing how there's no guardrails; scary chit, man!
Awesome video! Me and 3 other guys are riding up there in 4 more days from Kentucky, one of the guys in my group said he always wanted to ride pikes peak, I need to double check my brake pads and maybe bring and extra set just in case. Lol
During summer time, temps vary between 45 and 55 (5 - 10C), so bring a jacket, and if you spend any amount of time on the summit (say > 30 to 60 minutes), wear sunscreen. Despite being chilly up there, the sun hits quite a bit harder and you'll burn much faster
Yeah it would be amazing. They are doing a race there in the next couple of weeks. ONly problem is that there are cars and no guardrails on many of the corners. Beautiful road
Oxygen 53%= can't breathe. Oxygen 57%= still can't breathe *pant pant*. Oxygen 62%= this is what a fish out of water feels like??? Thanks for the trip- Colorado is on my bucket list for sure.
take this drive down pikes peak road from the top to half way down. Last time Irene and I drove it was in the early 90s in our 1985 ford station wagon. It was gravel then and no guard rails. turn on your sound for this. Enjoy
Actually they had way more guardrails than a period of time not so long ago. Back in the 90's, the section of road from the brake checkpoint to the summit used to be unpaved, and there were no guard rails at all. In fact, the gift shop at the summit used to sell these Pike's Peak t-shirts that said "Pikes Peak, 14110 ft. Real Men/Women don't need guardrails"
@railclaimore I think the auto vs. manual debate is crazy because they're the same except for mileage, but I'll say that when going downhill for a long time all you have to do is switch to low drive (D1 or D2) and you're fine.
I'm an American, and I am not fat, or a fuck. But I am also not normal. I challenge myself to be better than I was before, and in some ways better than many of those people around me. I am not lazy, I appreciate the fine arts including classical music in addition to mainstream media, and I try to learn as much as I can. I am also part of dying breed and I do agree with both you and "gubevares" in some aspects :)
Wow beautiful video. I could never do that drive, instant vertigo! Some of the people seem to be driving way to close to one another (tailgating ) as well. It is amazing how many people have zero common sense while driving. You'd think they would put more gaurdrails in at some point...
i would think a manual trans would be better on down hill grades like this keeping it in a low gear and letting the engine work as form of Jake break what is % is the grade?
I was just there last week, 2/3 way up, fog/cloud coming down so bad, we can barely see a car a head of us. There is no way to turn around. We slowly "crawled" up at 10MPH. When we got to the top, we din't even know it. The cloud was so thick, we can't only see less than 3 feet. No guide from park ranger at the top. We can't even see where to park. The gift shop was completed cover under a thick cloud. To find it was a challenge, like being blind folded. It is truly the most dangerous drive worst than the drive up mount Rainier. I did't think we would make it back! NEVER AGAIN! It's a "death wish" highway!
I am a retired German trucker. I did not see any truck. is this road closed for trucks? I could understand it because there are many people without fear of heights and mot all trucks are equipped writh disk breaks and especially with retarder breaks. A wonderful video. What a gorgeous scene. I am thrilled. Greetings from Germany
This road leads only to the summit. It is a touristic road, it doesn't give through access to any city, village or factory. So I think that other than trucks servicing the road or the peak facilities, there is no reason for any truck to attempt a drive there.
