With Pikmin 1 + 2 now on Switch, us Pikmin fans have access to every single Pikmin game on one console! Let's discuss the changes made to the Pikmin 1 port and see how it adds up!

NOTE: Some people are wondering why the bundle in my video is $70; that’s in AUD. It’s like $50 USD. ALSO: I forgot a couple things worth mentioning: - These ports fixed the crushing/bridge glitches that caused frequent random deaths of Pikmin - You can hold A to keep plucking instead of spamming like the originals Thanks to @sirsqueeko, @marioluigibros.8176 & @PSIkid for reminding me. I've also gotten pretty comfortable with the swarming (holding L while using the right stick), it just takes a fair bit of time to get the hang of it.

No, the only version of Pikmin 1 I have ever played is the Wii version and it definitely has the crushing glitch. It is a huge deal that this is removed. I hate that glitch with a passion as it is so frequent, at least the way I play.

Also also, I don't think you mentioned how you no longer have to spam A to pluck pikmin, to be more consistent with Pikmin 3 all you have to do is hold A. The change confused me the first time lmao. Loved the video!

The whistle in the original releases of Pikmin is really tricky. It only becomes active after fully expanding, or when you end it early. Updating it to be more sensible like Pikmin 2 is great to see.

Another small detail I noticed is the gender of the Dolphin in the German translation. In the original game, Olimar referred to the Dolphin as "der Dolphin", so with the grammatical masculine article. I would guess that this was chosen because "Delfin", the German word for a dolphin, is also masculine. However, in later games and the switch version, Olimar's ship was called "die Dolphin", with the grammatical feminine article, which is more common for ship and space shuttle names. I just started replaying the first game about a week ago, so I quickly noticed it. It's really a very small detail.

Nintendo seems to be changing their localizations to be more faithful to the English and/or Japanese version, its honestly a little strange. They just changed abunch of character names in chinese from being translations to being transliterations, mainly donkey kong peach and daisy. 桃花 (taohua, peach blossom) ->碧姬 (pee chi, transliterated from japanese)

@@thisnameisbad3609 In the Netherlands we once had a commercial that a lot of foreigners found really inappropriate. It was a little kid saying "Mama, die, die, die" translating into "Mama, that one, that one, that one", but when you see it big on a billboard a lot of people who didn't understand Dutch were incredibly confused.

12:00 It's a real shame that Nintendo games lack more options for controls. It really isn't difficult to have the camera and swarming switched, or to have the camera controls reversed. I'm guessing that the physical release wouldn't have these options as standard even if they're added soon to the digital version,.

It's the same SKU; any updates one gets, the other will too. Meanwhile, Game Cards are printed with the latest version. So if they add more options before the Game Cards go to print, they'll be on the Game Card!

@@josephboehmer1245 Even with the system settings rebinding, Pikmin 1 and 2 are impossible to get back to how they control on GC due to the ports using the NPC! versions, and by extension their controls, as a base.

6:05 When they look up into the onion while they put something in, if you really don't want to wait, you can dismiss all of your pikmin and they become dismissed to so you can whistle them and they will immediately join back into your group. (you can also probably do this in original pikmin 1, but who knows)

I’ve never played pikmin before, but seeing the trailers for pikmin 4 it’s got me really interested about the games. I think I’ll play the demo for that and if it takes my fancy, I’ll definitely be buying 1&2, and then 3&4 if I fall in love with the series. (Which, I hope I will!)

Just connect a Wii remote and nunchuck to your laptop and play the Wii versions of the first two games using Dolphin emulator. You could even get the GameCube ROMs and connect any controller to your computer and run those games through Dolphin. Using Dolphin is super easy, runs super well on any computer, it can be set up in 15 minutes and there's tonnes of RU-vid tutorials to help you with starting it up. With the price they're charging, don't give your money to Nintendo for very little improvements. Nintendo hardly ever has their games go on sale either.

I believe the reason that the motion controls turn off when you're not pressing A or B is so you can reset your positioning. Pikmin 3 Deluxe uses the R button to reset and Skyward Sword HD uses Y. The Wii and WiiU didn't need those because they use the IR sensor bar as a fixed point of reference. Also the gyro remains active for a few frames after releasing A so you can still keep throwing without the cursor resetting to where your stick is placing it.

Yeah but leaving the option in there for always on pointer controls like Pikmin 3 Deluxe would have felt a lot better. After playing Pikmin 4 I get the impression that Nintendo is actively trying to discourage such pointer controls after everyone basically refused to use the tablet controls they worked so hard on in Pikmin 3 because the pointer controls were just always so much better.

5:50 This clip of you fighting the Wolly... hop got deep into me. I could never imagine fighting that swiftly with that thing, even with blues instead of reds. It seems like a standard clip, but it really hits home to people that played the original versions of Pikmin 1. It is even better at 6:39, the fact that they answered immediately and none were crushed seems wild to me.

as someone who never played the old versions, making camera controls standard on the right stick as absolutely the right choice since I used them constantly, although I have no idea why nintendo doesnt let you remap the controls

As someone who played the originals more than any other game in my life, you really don't need the customization. These controls are infinitely better there is just no reason to tie one hand behind your back and have to use the trigger to adjust your camera angle.

@@bennettnez4711I think what OP was saying that maybe holding L and using right stick could be camera control, like skyward sword HD is when using button controls, and the stick by itself would be swarm. I think holding L for swarm is fine though, I haven’t played it yet. But I get used to controls easily

Really appreciate the comprehensive look at this port from someone so familiar with the game. I'd like to pick these ports up, but $50 seems steep for a couple of pretty barebones and somewhat quirky ports. I'm one of the few who still has all my old consoles (and CRT TV) hooked up, so I'll probably just stick to the GC versions for now. Great video though.

I have both my Wii and Switch set up, plus my Wii U as well. ;) By the way Jimble, you forgot to mention that the crushing glitch from the GameCube and Wii versions was patched out in this port, so it's automatically the best way to play the game!

I wish they had a chosen to put the swarm ability as the default thing for the right stick and then made you press L to rotate the camera with the right stick. Like you said they prioritised the wrong thing lol.

I think the bomb rocks worked BETTER in this version, somehow. I had way less trouble fighting the final boss then I normally do. Maybe I’ve just gotten better at it? Not sure, but I figured it was worth noting I had an opposite experience from you.

The forced throwing makes bomb rocks better for the final boss definitely. The yellows hesitate less which makes it easier to hit the tongue. It’s a very nice change in that aspect. However for walls having to take twice as long since you can’t drop them and having them ALWAYS prioritize enemies over walls so if a snitchbug or wisp appears they’re throwing it away from the wall, likely into your squad, sucks.

@@tnzwelk curious how you managed this - I tried the final boss yesterday and I think only once the yellow successfully threw the bomb at the tongue, and it felt lucky. All the other times it got eaten.

@@randomjar6934 It's better if they don't - in the GC pikmin 1, if you call the yellow pikmin back at the right time, it would drop the bomb and the boss would only eat the bomb. This stuns it for significantly longer than if it ate the pikmin. I haven't figured it out with the new system where the yellow pikmin decides when to throw the bomb.

@@zLumiNeonz I just threw it right as/before he started the attack. I've played the game probably 30 times and gotten the bomb throw maybe once in my life before switch. On switch I got it every time without trying. It was wild.

That's neat you noticed the whistle changes. I played a TON of Pikmin when it was released, but didn't play it until several years ago before the Switch release. The game felt more responsive somehow, but I really couldn't put my finger on how.

Good video! Glad to hear that the Switch version of Pikmin 1 is good! It is nice to see all the main Pikmin games on the Switch! I hope some of the more well-known Pikmin 1 & 2 hacks/mods can eventually be ported to the Switch versions! Would love to especially see Pikmin 1 Randomizer on the Switch version!

@@NoCloutJoey That isn't even remotely true. People have been modding the Switch for years. As long as you stay offline and don't connect to Nintendo servers, you're pretty much safe to use whatever mods you want.

Oh I still got the Wii set up man. Leave that Wii U plugged in for Wii/Wii U games!! But great video, lots of little details in your run down. Pretty crazy I would also be annoyed by a bit of those changes against the original as well. It is so awesome to see tons of new players trying out Pikmin for the first time. I still own the originals and I want to play through these versions, waiting for the physical release! Been enjoying all your Pikmin videos!

The term for inverted vertical controls is "Flight Stick" controls, because they mimic how a pilot pulling back on a flight stick causes an aircraft's nose to point upwards, and pushing forward does the opposite. (The reason why is because the control surfaces on an aircraft that controls pitch [up and down direction], the elevators, are on the tail fins of the aircraft, behind the centerpoint of its lateral axis, around which the plane rotates its nose up and down. Pulling back lifts the elevators up, force of air over the elevators pushes the back of the plane down, and because the lateral axis acts like a fulcrum, when the tail goes down, the nose goes up, and visa versa when the nose is pushed forward.) It's also how a cameraman would push down on a control lever attached to the rear of a camera that is set up on a pivot mount, which causes the back of the camera to go down and inversely the viewpoint of the camera to go up. Since I grew up on flight simulators, it is ingrained into my brain at a primal level that you pull down on a mouse/stick to look up and push up to look down. Rather annoying that 20+ years on from the GameCube era, Nintendo is still not providing many basic optional control settings for their games, especially when they switch how the controls work from an original title in a port for it today.

I think this version is just the best version in every aspect. Would have been nice to have more controll options like inverted but I think all the changes they made are improvements. Even the motion controls only activating when you press the button is pretty smart as I would always have to resync in Pikmin 3 Deluxe so thats a nice change that doesn't require adding a reset button.

As a BIG pikmin fan thanks to Dazz, ZachScott, Atacking Tuscan (idk if I spelt them right) but I never played the og 2, didn't have a wii or GameCube, however now I can play all 4 games on my switch! (I do have a wii u anf yeah I did pay for 3 deluxe, my disc scratched on wii u and I just wanna show the pikmin franchise the best that I can

Since I started with Pikmin 2 and havent gotten to 1 yet I'm not sure if this crosses over but there's extremely minor text changes which range from neat to extremely confusing. It seems like the pattern is that its either done to have a more modern sanitized nintendo comment, grammar issues, or to bring in some parity between the US, EU, and JPN versions. For instance, the gemstar wife and husband have been renamed to Red and Green gemstar and the Ship's sale pitch has been modified to specify that "any pairing of the male and female gemstones" will make them long for each other rather than specifically male and female. Olimar also no longer mentions his mom and dad in the priceless and worthless statue descriptions, and wollywogs are now wollyhops. A handful of other treasure and enemy names were also changed. Unfortunately the weed leaf was also changed to a maple leaf in all languages, which was very expected but mildly sad to say goodbye. Obviously it really does not matter much at all but if you've played these games a lot and recently it might give you a monent or two of confusion where whats said doesn't align with what you remember. and also, the lie down feature went from almost never used to damn near overpowered simply because its instantaneous, which makes it much faster to lie down while walking to get up immediately rather than dismissing, especially when fighting enemies like the sheargrubs or water dumples.

I understand why they changed the textures on the treasure but I was disappointed as it was part of its identity. I'm very conflicted now that you mention those other changes, as it feels like Nintendo is trying to gaslight me.

@@GoldenLeafsMovies The amount of changes is unfathomable, almost every line is altered. I don't understand why in most cases, it feels like a constant mandela affect lmao. Unfortunately it ruins some of the old jokes. I get they had to modernize the game but it feels a little excessive, kind of would have preferred they were light on dialogue changes when it changes the original text. Pikmin 2 is such a weird and dark game, it should be allowed to express weird and dark themes in its text as well.

The lie down dismisses pikmin? I just started playing the original pikmin 1 (I’m waiting for physical copy of switch versions), I guess I’ll try that. So laying down and getting up to dismiss is faster than pressing X? I’m not sure I understand what you said

@@halami2149 In Pikmin 1, it doesn't dismiss the squad. In Pikmin 2, lying down causes your Pikmin to dismiss without sorting into groups. In the original game, this was slower as you had to hold x to lie down. But in the port, it happens immediately due to the fact that it is not bound to the right stick being pressed down. Additionally, if you lie down while moving, you will immediately get back up. this is really useful because dismissing normally causes Pikmin to spread out a ton, and there's a slight delay. It lets you kill enemies like Water Dumples faster because when the Pikmin are dismissed they will immediately lock onto an enemy, meanwhile simply swarming takes much longer in many cases

I do think the controls are better on the wii. For the wii you had complete control over the reticle, but now when you want to move left but keep the pointer to the right, it instead follows olimar which is very annoying. You can't move and leave the pointer where it is. It instead follows olimar

The pointer motion controls were miles better on Wii, since the Wii had a sensor bar. In Pikmin 1&2 HD, the cross hair eventually drifts inches away from where you're pointing after around 15 seconds of moving it around in multiple directions. It doesn't cover enough ground either, and i can't believe NIntendo didn't bump 1&2 up to 60fps. Lazy ports.

Great writeup! Thanks! I think you still have to swarm pikmin to get max throw speed. Mashing A without swarming is way faster than in the GC release but you can increase your throw speed even further by swarming.

It's funny you mention about the right stick camera because, having not played the original/Wii versions for well over a decade, using L+RIght stick for the swarm felt natural to me. I guess it's what you're used to. But more control options would always be an improvement

Sad to hear about the lack of options, would've been really nice to be able to customise it as close to gamecube controls as possible, but it isn't much of a surprise given how often Nintendo games lack options, particularly control options

They did the same thing to us with super mario all stars, particularly the inverted Y axis change in the remastered sunshine. Its very frustrating when you try to play a remastered game with the muscle memory for the original and the controls have been changed in a noticable way. Especially when there isn't an option to change the controls.

@jasonreed7522 the difference is in sunshine, it is objectively worse because you can do less. You can no longer use the gradient feature in gamecube controllers, the triggers are activated or not. In pikmin, you do not lose the ability do ANYTHING, but gain the ability to throw farther and more accurately (this is objective and can be measured) all while controlling a fluid camera like a game made in this decade.

It also would take under an hour to impliment a simple toggle to invert the behavior so that you hold a button to pan and swarm by default. (Swarming is objectively far more important than panning the camera) And the swapping between top down and chase mode for the camera was a lot more intuitive as a simple button rather than a slam on the c-stick that is reversed from expected and isn't simply a toggle. Besides theirs only 1 point in the game where thow distance is genuinely needed, and that's the long throw at final trial to bomb the rock wall between the bridges. (Carry and run then throw) The new controls are not "objectively better" they are simply unnecessarily different and a change for neutral gain isn't worth the opportunity cost of changing.

The original Pikmin is the only one I had played until recently, and it was a lot of fun going back and playing through it again before I play 2 and 3. Not having to spam A to pull up Pikmin is nice, but there are definitely some parts that are worse than I remember. Like, the AI seems extra stupid for some reason. Sometimes while sending Pikmin back to their Onion, they will walk to the stem and then their state will get stuck and they will sit there doing nothing instead of going inside. As well, the hit boxes seems to be kind of broken. Throwing a Pikmin at some of the enemies and hitting them directly is a OHKO, but sometimes the hitbox doesn't trigger and they go right through, land on the ground with no idea what to do, and walk back to Olimar... Really wish these were remakes, but the game is an undeniable classic!

Ran into a bug on 1 yesterday where my Pikmin were invisible and were dying as I tried to pull them out of the onion, then when reloading the save I hit a few wrong buttons and accidentally deleted the save file. Not my proudest or smartest moment.

Something I noted in Pikmin 1 HD is that they changed the sound effect for the onions when they spit out the Pikmin sprouts unless they did that for the Wii version I’m not sure I only have the Game Cube version. It sounds lower pitched for some reason?

I fit condition 1..I never played 1 and 2 but when i tried the demo for the 3rd one i immediate wanted them over on the Switch..I can't believe i skipped this series on GameCube..I was tempted sooo many times to buy them on the Gamecube but i decided to wait and hopefully Nintendo would release them on the Switch.Glad i held off from getting now i have all of them on the Switch..Looking forward to your 2nd video

I was very excited when Nintendo announced this! Can't wait for Pikmin 4 and never played the first two Games, because I got into Pikmin on Wii U with a Demo of Pikmin 3. I watch the Wii-Versions of both on ReBuy but they were too expensive all the time concidering I have to play them on my Wii U which is kind of dying. So I went to the eShop and never looked back. Glad I have them now - and soon all (major) Pikmin games on one console. And finally I can play Pikmin 1 and 2. I have played a bit of Pikmin 1 and think it is just fine. I'm not disappointed in any way, I love it so far! Well, of course I'm kind of spoiled with some advancements Pikmin 3 obviously got but that's ok and I concidered beforehand anyways. I pretty much share your view point and subbed because I like how you approach and talk. See you later.

I imagine the area thumbails were taken in engine so redoing them 1:1 would be pretty tricky, and i imagine they just didnt think to keep those files after the development ended

I think an easier way to get used to swarming with the l button is to swap the mapping for the l and r buttons, I did this and after a ingle play through of the game it’s like second nature for me

ok, i literally just replayed pikmin 1 on gamecube like a couple weeks before this announcement, and i swear you can whistle them almost immediately after they deliver something to the onion. in the switch version they just stand there forever, staring up until you can call them. it feels significantly different.

Nintendo's Gamecube emulation for Super Mario Sunshine was kind of shoddy, so I'm concerned with these two games - What is the "crushing glitch"? I tried searching for it yesterday, but couldn't find it

The crushing bug was a bug that crushes pikmin randomly with no sound or indication, the Wii version made the problem worse actually. The switch version fixed that. The emulation work is actually really good, no problems anywhere. They’ve even fixed a lot of small problems like mistranslations and bugs involving the UI. It’s surprising higher effort than 3D all stars

I've never played the Wii versions of these games, so I was really looking forward to trying the motion controls this time around. I have no clue why they didn't go the Pikmin 3 route and have character movement and cursor movement completely separated. My Pikmin 3 muscle memory had me constantly expecting that I could throw or whistle Pikmin while running in the opposite direction and it was frustrating trying to unlearn that. By the halfway point of Pikmin 2, I swapped to a pro controller and turned off the motion :P

The reason for the change is to give the reticle a point of reference to return to when you aren't actively using it. Ultimately it's less annoying than needing to constantly press a button to re-center it like Pikmin 3 Deluxe clumsily does.

I really don't like the fact that they used AI upscaling for the level select... it just looks _bad._ I really hope they don't use AI for stuff like this very often, or at the very least I hope its _exclusive_ to ports of older games. AI stuff is usually less high quality than human-made textures and art, and I don't want them to make a habit of it just to save money...

Actually on the wii version you couldnt throw them further unless you used the glitch where you move in the direction you are throwing so the pikmin has more forward velocity (for some reason). You could wistle further tough, wich was helpfull when you threw a pikmin out of your normal wistle range because of this glitch (i actually lost pikmin due to that on the gamecube version)

I don't know if i missed it or not but was the crush glitch fixed. That glitch was where i lost a majority of pikmin in 1. I don't like the sound of the new controls so if the crush glitch is still present I'll probably just save my money and stick with the wii version

If you play using the mclassic on dock mode it makes the game look absolutely perfect! All jaggies are gone and the colors pop even more.

I absolutely loved the motion controls, and I definitely preferred them to Pikmin 3 Deluxe. I hope this version of the hybrid gyro controls are an option in 4.

I'm waiting on the physical copy. I didn't complete pikmin 3 deluxe but i still want to support the franchise. I played so much 1 and 2 as a kid. I hope the next gen of kids find the same enjoyment

Oh, wow. I was right about the creature roll credits, and I’m surprised Nintendo actually remade it. I think this port is the better way to play Pikmin 1, even although it lacks extra options for swarm and camera. I’m glad the older games are available for everyone and all on one system. However, I don’t think $64.99 (plus tax) for both game aren’t worth it personally, because I played both games on GameCube recently and I might have to wait for a sale or use my Gold Points towards both games on the Switch. I’m curious on how much is added or changed in Pikmin 2, other than the brand products. Anyways, really good review!! 👍

I just booted my gamecube version, and I feel like the pikmin actually respond faster there after carrying something to the onion. So unless I'm crazy, it's the only thing that's actually slightly worse on the switch version regarding the responsiveness of the pikmin.

About the motion controls: just finished a playthrough of Pikmin 2 with the motion controls on and I gotta say, they really grew on me. I found the motion controls in Pikmin 3 Deluxe to be quite clunky since the cursor constantly gets desynced and you have to press a button to reset it. Pikmin 1+2 fixes this issue by making the controls more of a "hybrid" style between the Gamecube and Wii versions. You aren't supposed to solely rely on the motion controls like with Wii controls. Use the stick to get the cursor close to where you want it to be, and then use motion to make small adjustments while throwing. Then the cursor resets when your done so you don't have to press a button to reset it. I feel it actually works really well when you get used to it.

I finished the first I’m playing the second one and wow it’s even better than 1 and even better than 3. I had never played 2 back in the day even though I’m a huge fan. It looks incredible. Well worth the price.

I'm reminded of how at the launch of 3D all stars Sunshine had troubles with being compatible with gamecube controllers because of one button lacking too, I find it weird how Nintendo has fumbled this aspect twice or more huh.

You are thinking of how they inverted the Y axis when controlling FLUDD. Or maybe the fact that the switch has digital triggers but the gamecube had analog triggers so they couldn't replicate the partial spray power the same. (This one was atleast a hardware limitation so we just had to get used to it) Nintendo seems to be making a habit of remastered beloved games and screwing up the controls without adding an options menu to adjust the controls. (Something so many game have today, and even back then.)

I just got this game yesterday. I've never played a Pikman game before, but I heard good things. I like it but the 30 day limit bothers me. I'm on day 3 and am already behind, I got 2 parts, but didn't get the yellow pikmins till day 3.
