My theory is that Onions are actually just female Pikmin. Pikmin have evolved EXTREME gender dimorphism - the males are the laborers and fighters, while the females, in addition to handling reproduction, also provide shelter and mobility. Their morphology changed so much to specialize them for their tasks that they no longer resemble the male Pikmin in most ways. Although the Onion design has undergone various changes, it always has a flower, just like how Pikmin have flowers (when mature). I think Candypop Buds are themselves actually different kinds of Onions, only with their bulbs being underground.

I just assumed that the reason why Olimar isn't turned into a pikmin in a the bad ending is because he's an alien. The onion might just not be able to properly process him as his biology could be very different to anything that lives on the planet. As for the second game's ending, the tips of their stems glow faintly when they are idle. I guess that every pikmin came out of the onion to say goodbye, and so hundreds of dimly lit pikmin combined created the blinding light seen in the ending. As for the onions, my favorite theory is that pikmin are essentially just the babies of the species, while the onion is the adult capable of reproduction. The candypop bud could be a sort of transitional teenage state, as it does resemble the onion when it closes.

Maybe the onion turning olimar into a Pikmin be more proof that it's intelligent and wanted to preserve his life to help better the Pikmin as a species or something idk

I like to think that the onions are the actual conscious(?) entities, while the individual pikmin are just part of a hive mind and are sent out as literal eyes and ears to collect information and return it to the onion.

Maybe the sun that olimar holds is meant to represent his heavenly spirit/power, or maybe since he always commanded them to return to the onion at night, he was the one that gave them sunlight, makes sense considering he “woke” the onion up in the first game.

This is a great video man, and I love the part on Onions, you just gave me a big idea regarding the Onion itself. I think the Onion is sentient, just like the Pikmin. It explains how it knows certain things, and I believe the Onion is the Pikmin Mother. Think about it, Olimar first referred to the Onion as the Pikmin Mother ship, comparing it to an Alien Spaceship essentially, but what if it's a LITERAL interpretation of that concept, the Onion is a Sentient Female Parent Organism that knows and cares for it's offspring it produces. Like we tend to just look at the onion like it's just a space ship with no personality consciousness or identity, but that's just because the Onions can't speak and don't have Eyes. But they are alive and they do think and are conscious of what's around them.

Pikmin are based off of ants, as they are both small eusocial creatures that bring back corpses and food to their nests. My theory is that, just like ants, there is a sort of class system for the species. The Pikmin are the workers, each color type having a natural resistance to their environment, and I think Onions are Queen Pikmin. Worker ants live anywhere from 4_12 months if their lucky, but Queens live 10-15 years, only having to breed once and be able to lay fertile eggs for their entire lifespans. I think that Onions have hundreds of fertile worker seeds within them, but only let them out into the world once the Onion can confirm it is in a livable environment. The way the Onion will confirm this is by sending a lone Pikmin to scout the area. If the Pikmin doesn't return by sundown, The Onion goes elsewhere, if the Pikmin can supply nutrients to the Onion, the Onion will settle in that area. We see in Pikmin 2, The Red and Blue Onions have a handful of Pikmin hunting nearby, while the Yellow Onion is currently trapped behind a poison wall and a Fiery Bulblax. We see in Pikmin 3 each Onion is trapped in some way, Encased in Crystal, Low Light Level Environment, Spiderweb etc. The only exception is Pikmin 1 so far, and I believe the Onions where in a statis or they lost hope before Olimar arrived, hence why each game Afterwards we see The Onions in Action/attempting to be in Action. Ok so before I go into the lifecycle of the Onion, I'll go into the Queen Ant's first. When a Queen decides to make another Queen, she produces this special food called "Royal Jelly" where the caretaker ants feed the larva it and those larva become Elite Ants, being much larger in size and able to breed. The males will die shortly after mating, but the females will live on to become Queens. I think when the Onion decides to make a new Onion, it'll do special process to turn the regular worker seeds into Onion seeds. Now this is where I personally think Candypop Buds (CPB) come into play. I can see the argument that CPB are a parasitic, mimic, or relative to Onions/Pikmin, but I personally think that they are the 2nd stage of the Onion's lifecycle. I think Queen CBP are a relative species to the Onion, since they live solely underground to my knowledge, but in the case I am wrong they could be the 3rd stage in the Onion's development. Next I think is the Onions from Pikmin 3, and I think this is an earlier stage due to the fact they can merge with other colored onions, which may imply a higher count of stem cells, allowing the Onion to become which color based on its environment. Then finally we have the Onions we see in Pikmin 1 and 2, locked in to 1 type of Pikmin, ready to settle in one area, only leaving to avoid nocturnal predators and follow the various Captains as they are the best chance of prosperity for the Pikmin. TL;DR: The Onions are Queen Pikmin that store countless fertile eggs within themselves along with the Pikmin. They start out as special seeds that grow into Candypop Buds, which them may grow into Queen Candypop Buds, which then turn into the Hybrid type Onion from Pikmin 3, then ending as the Monotype Onions as seen in Pikmin 1 and 2. The Pikmin we know are workers that supply their Queen with Nutrition. An Onion will search for a place to continually release its workers by sending out a handful to hunt, testing the waters so to speak, in order to determine if it is currently in a suitable Environment.

Loui's comment on the flowers being super spicy might be because that's the flower's defense mechanism against predators The same way spicy plants and fruits develop that taste so only desirable predators feed on them and keep away any other herbivore, the candypop flowers might be like that in order to keep creatures from eating them and be able to surve long enough to receive the nutrients from the pikmin

I like to think it is the glowing antenna on Olimar is why the Pikmin obey him, as the Great Glower.

Mamutas are definitely weird mfers. I feel like their connection to Pikmin, which is corroborated by the japanese names of them and the Smokey Progg, is something we need to see more of. One idea I have is that, since Pikmin are safe while planted, they could have been a sort of symbiotic species in the past. Mamuta likes the pretty flowers, while the Pikmin thrive nearby Mamuta as it keeps them safe. Maybe the onion evolved a similar marking/pattern to their arm band as the Pikmin associate that pattern with safety or home? If that was the case, it would seem that Mamutas have been left behind by the Pikmin.

The odd thing with the onions turning Olimar into a pikmin-like creature is that Olimar can lie down in both of the classic games and can be picked up by the pikmin and brought to one of the onions. The onion then sucks Olimar up and spits him back out with some fireworks

What if the bad ending were how the Bulbmin were created? The onion is shown to have somewhat parasitic abilities by converting anything into the Pikmin family.

Maybe this is just Olimar's lifeless corpse being piloted by one of these parasitic pikmin... Olimar's notes say "By burying its rootlike limbs into the nervous system of the host bulborb and infusing it with natural hormonal excretions, the bulbmin is able to control virtually all of the host's bodily functions". If this could be done to a bulborb, how much of a stretch is it to say it could be done to a Hocotatian? My theory is that this only appears in bulborbs and Olimar because the process seems quite complex and may need lots of familiarity with the host. Bulborbs are probably by far the most common threat to pikmin and so they would have knowledge of them, and by the time Olimar dies on the planet, the pikmin will have gained quite a bit of familiarity with him as well... I always imagined the reason behind all the different Onion designs, is because of the different regions and areas they live in. They adapted to different climates and areas and have changed in their design because of that

When thrown into a candy pop bud, pikmin get deflowered, so maybe, candy pop buds "feed" from the buds or flowers (hoping that pikmin don't just have laeves) and use this to re-grow, after they die

i think onions are kind of like queen pikmin perhaps in the right circumstances a pikmin could become an onion or it could even become a candypop bud

Here's a thought, the Quaggled Mireclops might be distantly related to the Pikmin. It's a plant based enemy with 3 legs, the reason I bring up the legs is because the onion also has 3 legs. This is just something I personally noted, might not be the case, but fun speculation.

The plasm wraith, waterwraith, and smokey progg all give very similar vibes, so I would say it is definitely plausible. The progg is also a bit destroyed on the bottom, which hints to me that its the lifeforce of these creatures (or at least what makes them develop) and the progg would be vulnerable when green, instead of gold or purple.

I propose a life cycle. Pikmin are born. When fully mature, they root themselves into the ground and become a candypop bud. When the candypop grows, it becomes an onion and begins producing more Pikmin seeds. Once it has produced enough Pikmin, the outer shell hardens and it undergoes metamorphosis, absorbing the Pikmin inside to become a Mamuta which then hunt to gather nutrients for other onions and takes care of them and their Pikmin as they mature. This is also why the Mamuta doesn't kill Pikmin that attack it, but simply incapacitates them by burying them. When a Mamuta dies, its body is taken by Pikmin to create more seeds and the cycle goes on.

The idea of Pikmin praising Olimar like he's their savior makes me really rethink the entire franchise

What if the stone creature and the pikmin have a symbiotic relationship where it turns the Pikmin to planted flowers and then, if given enough time to grow, the planted pikmin flowers turn into the flowers that can turn pikmin into different colors using their own energy, which is why these flowers die if used a lot, and if those flowers are left to grow they eventually develop into onions? I also thought ab the possibility that the onions turn into the stone creatures but the egg/smoky progg kinda throw a rench into that theory. Given the marking though I don’t think it’s impossible

Maybe the landmarks of where the Drake should land were just made by the pikmin because they expected a return of Olimar, and thus indicating where his ship should land

The Pikmin 4 demo actually has the Family order listed, Onions and Flarlics are listed in the Family: Candypop, so the theory that Onions and Candypop buds are related is proven, Pikmin do not evolve into Candypop buds or Onions though as the Piklopedia states that Pikmin are in the Family: Pikmin, it also states that Pikmin and Onions have an extrodinary symbiotic relationship meaning they just work together and help each other out (Mutualism is the form of symbiotic relationship they have, the Pikmin bring food to the Onions and the Onions provide a home for the Pikmin (there might be a queen Pikmin inside the onions all the time we never see and thats what actually produces the Pikmin rather then the Onion since they are based on ants))

my theory is that pikmin are actually seeds. A pikmin planted long enough will eventually turn into a candypop bud, and then finally an onion, hence why the mamuta are considered the lords of pikmin, because they allow uprooted pikmin to travel and then be replanted elsewhere, for example the red onion is found in the only place a mamuta can spawn in pikmin 1

I think that a Candypop bud is displaying a resource it has an excess of with it's color, and when you throw a pikmin in, it takes out the resource that makes that pikmin it's specific type, and gives it some of it's excess of the resource it has too much of.

Maybe pikmin are like a creature that changes sex as it ages? So like pikmin are workers, who generally wont reach full maturity. Candypop bulbs are teens, but they actually function as *males* spreading their genetic matetial to pikmin, who temporarily take on the function of sperm, and can return the flowers genetic material to an onion to create seeds for new onions. And part of the rapid evolution of onions between games was the pikmin organizing enough to start doing reproduction between different previously geographicallly locked onions, creating gradually more elaborate hybrids of onion.

something to note about the Smoky Progg is that it specifically is noted as the "Lord of Pikmin" above anything else, even the Puffstool, a creature capable of taking forced control of other characters' pikmin, as well as the Mamuda itself, which is capable of causing pikmin to flower (which actually lends credence to the idea that they're artificial gardeners created by some species to tend to the earth, I however don't think it was humans that made them due to how different they are from normal human architecture as well as just how small they are, if a large bulborb is supposed to be around the size of a cat... then the Mamuda are insanely tiny)

In the Pikmin 4 piklopedia for the Smoky Progg, it's revealed the Smoky Progg eggs are actually Mamuta eggs. Saying that perhaps a Smoky Progg is a Mamuta that hasn't developed properly.

I like to think that when a candypop bud when it reaches the end of its life, the remains if met on the right conditions grow into a Pikmin onion - gaining the ability to produce Pikmin when nutrition is brought at the cost of losing conversion. And I also think that the Pikmin are a hivemind (or at least a bit), with a queen Pikmin being the heart to the onion

A lot of interesting things coming from the Pikmin 4 demo already. I'm just SO interested to see where it leads, as it currently seems to be an offshoot of Pikmin 1 instead of a continuation of the story and honestly? I'd be very happy with that. The original trilogy has a very strong and weird story with a great ending. Koppai won't starve and Olimar gets his ship back.

In pikmin 4 you get a white and purple onion but in pikmin 2 n 3 there's no such thing so maybe olimar hadn't come across the purple and white onions also in the secret ending of pikmin you can clearly see that there was a white and purple onion.

Thing about the Mamuta armband marking being similar to the onion connection is that with each game, the onion marking been getting more and more subtle In pikmin 4 (and hey pikmin) they arent even there Does that mean that connection has been retconned?

I think it’s very possible that the Pikmin are the result of intelligent design. The onions look inorganic, especially in 3. Couple that with the fact that all life on PNF-404 seems to have evolved to keep the Pikmin population dwindling. Maybe they were intended to be some kind of life destroying bioweapon, or could even be the very reason humanity is out of the picture.
