Pikmin 3 - The Best Min I've Ever Pikked

The “Hard” mode of Pikmin 3 Deluxe is actually just the same difficulty as the original WiiU version. The game does the annoying thing of the “Normal” difficulty actually being the easier mode they created for the Switch port. “Ultra Spicy” difficulty is the game’s actual hard mode, but all it does is limit your max Pikmin count to 60 and give you half juice (which is still 50 days of juice total so still way too much.) But if you want an actually difficult version of Pikmin 3 since you like playing mods I highly recommend checking out “Pikmin 3 True Spice” a mod by Gunnadahun that makes the “Hard” mode of Pikmin 3 actually hard with new enemy ai and locations and giving you even less juice to where it’s actually possible to run out. And in that mod “Ultra Spicy” turns into “Maximum Spice” where the game becomes so hard and you get so little juice that it’s barely possible to beat. I’d recommend jumping over to that mod for your second playthrough of this game rather than going into vanilla“Ultra Spicy” mode.

Now that all of the preamble is done we can finally get to the GOOD Pikmin games, like Hey! Pikmin

Funny thing about the difficulty: Pikmin 3 on Wii U only had one difficulty, and I always felt that the game needed two steps up worth of difficulty to get challenging. Imagine my surprise when it turned out that Pikmin 3 Deluxe added Hard Mode and Ultra Spicy Mode! And then I found out. Found out about the fact that what they call "Hard Mode" is actually the original Pikmin 3 difficulty, with Normal Mode being an even easier mode. Truthfully, I wouldn't be surprised if some new players played Pikmin 3 Deluxe on the recommended Normal Mode, found the game too dull because there were barely any consequences to their actions and ended up dropping the whole game in disappointment. Ultra Spicy is cool and all, but still only about a half step of what I would have wanted.

People who take issue with Louie being a food guy REALLY need to research the character, he has an entire piklopedia on how to cook enemies in 2, plus the WHOLE PLOT OF PIKMIN 2 HAPPENS BECAUSE LOUIE ATE SOMETHING VALUABLE HOW IS HE NOT A FOOD GUY

After seeing his reviews of the first 3 games, I've come to the conclusion that he is REALLY not gonna like Pikmin 4. 😅

I think the juice system would’ve worked better if either fruits weren’t the main collectible and you had to go out of your way to get them, or you consume more juice as you get more captains.

Pikmin 3 is certainly the most accessible of the Pikmin games, but it's way too short and easy, as you point out. Even on the hardest mode, you can completely ignore the whole juice concept as you're going to build up a huge overstock too quickly to ever care. They should've at least had you consume one juice per captain per day instead of just one per day. Then maybe the hardest difficulty would've maybe caused you to come close to caring about how much juice you got. The lack of being able to control the swarm direction of pikmin around you was off-putting at first, but I like all the other control improvements too much to mind its removal. They couldn't translate that to the re-releases of Pikmins 1 & 2 because they both had parts that relied too much on the swarm feature not to squeeze it into the controls. The great controls make it the perfect game for new Pikmin players to start with. I also love that they finally added coop. Pikmin 2 should've allowed splitscreen coop in the main story. If the Pikmin 2 re-release had coop added, I'd consider getting it. Leaves & buds keeping up with you is only positive. Flowered pikmin also hit enemies for more damage, and they stay in a tighter formation to the captain making them still better for dodging. There's still plenty of good reason to upgrade them. On the topic of game length, it's close, but Pikmin 3 is shorter than Pikmin 1. The average first time player will take a little under 20 in-game days to complete Pikmin 3, but a little over 20 in-game days to complete Pikmin 1, and those numbers are assuming you collect everything, including all of Pikmin 3's fruit and notes. The short length is my biggest complaint about Pikmin 3, but it's a good sign for a game when the biggest complaint is "I want more!". Ultra-spicy mode just makes the days shorter (6.5 minutes instead of 9 minutes), gives you half the juice per fruit, and maxes how many pikmin can follow you at once at 60 instead of 100. Even with those changes, it's still super easy and you'll still get too much juice to care about the juice.

You didn't mention it (Not that I expected you to) but on top of all the other things that Pikmin 3 does well the multiplayer mode is awesome! It drops you and another player into regular Pikmin maps but each of you has a bingo board filled with different things to collect and your goal is to get a bingo while also making sure the other guy doesn't get one by doing things like collecting things he needs to get a bingo before he can even if you don't need it yourself there is also an option to add a capture the flag element to it as a secondary win condition

You must be naturally and incredibly talented at playing Pikmin by ssaying it's easy. I didn't click with 1 or 2 but 3 is my favourite and a game I like to replay. I found it incredibly stimulating for my mind and loved the sense of exploration and how managable it all was via the three captains. Maybe 3 is the perfect Pikmin in terms of accessibility Thank you for explaining why 3 is the best (so far, maybe?)

I'm close to beating the game on ultra spicy and I can confirm that I frequently forget I'm playing on the highest difficulty. There's a mod that makes the game much harder called True Spice, so maybe look into that. I think that's how I'm gonna play the game next time, especially because Pikmin 3 works really well on Yuzu.

With the go to system or something, it could be use for luring a dangerous monster away for the others to escape or luring them into a trap with the cost of sacrificing a pikmin.

Ah, the Pikmin game I played the most currently! I played it once when it first came out on the Wii U, a second time when it came out on the Switch, a third time about a month to prepare for Pikmin 4, a fourth time when I realized there were other difficulty options so I tried out Hard lol, and probably a final time where I play the Ultra Spicy mode, which I’m excited for for an extra challenge because of the harder enemies and 60 Pikmin limit! Btw, I honestly think my favorite part of the Pikmin 3 is the fact that Nintendo actually made new protagonists for this game and not just made us play as Olimar again, and I honestly like all three of them, I mean, I think I personally like Olimar, Louie, and the President more for how much darker their humor together is, but I do like Alph, Brittany and Charlie a lot too just because how sweet they are to each other a lot of the time! And also, I think it’s really interesting that pretty much Olimar and Louie are so involved with the plot, but you don’t really realize it until, like, halfway through the game, that was such a huge surprise to find Olimar’s logs as a kid as someone who’s first Pikmin game was the Wii version of Pikmin 2! But yeah, overall, I really like this game! And I think the main reason why I don’t like it as much as Pikmin 2 currently is just because of how many times I’ve played it in a month! LMAO But honestly, I still had a lot of fun with how many times I played it, seeing myself completing the game in less and less days, so that was fun! Glad you have your favorite Pikmin game, man! Can’t wait to play and see you review Pikmin 4!

Just beat this yesterday. Just woke up to get the fourth game! The ten year wait is over! Pikmin 3 takes the best from both games and makes for an awesome Pikmin experience. Even with four’s demo 3 is still the best for me. I do miss the chaos of 2 sometimes, but the bosses really make up for it, as well as the back half of the first level, unlocked later on in the game. That being said, I do feel that Deluxe caps your Pikmin throwing, and lock-on was weird yesterday. If anything, GET Pikmin 3 Deluxe, there are so many extras included like all the DLC and extra Olimar modes. Lastly, I recommend doing a No Pikmin Death Run. It’s a true testament to the skill of the player, and really fun to do for each game (3 is probably the hardest, then 1, then 2). Thank you for reviewing these, I look forward to your thoughts on Pikmin 4!

If you’re looking for a Challenge in a pikmin game…Ultra Spicy mode is obsessively underwhelming. The main thing that changes is you only can have 60 pikmin on the field. That sounds challenging, but it’s still more than enough. The only kinda hard part is the Quagled Mireclops bossfight, because pikmin drown substantially faster.

I enjoyed 3 and all but... It misses the vibes man. Also its very easy... Like the easiest Pikmin game (haven't played 4 yet or Hey Pikmin which i will never play because Hey looks like it sucks ball ngl) I did enjoy Pikmin 2's difficulty and i think 3 overall lacks that. Sure there are some fun fights but I wasnt really challenged by any of them. Overall though I'd say it is better then Pikmin 1 but easier however not as great as 2 in my opinion (though tbh i like all three a lot overall)

Having 3 be your favorite is absolutely insane to me. It's by far the easiest game, even on the hardest difficulty and it's way too short for a game that came out like 10 years after the first 1. The first one benefits from being extremely replayable, but when I beat this game I just have no desire to ever play it again. The only note I can say that I like better than the other games is that I like how it handles bosses better, but that's honestly it.

I resonate with you and have played Pikmin 3 excessively over the last the years, optimizing my bonus mission scorers. imho it is the only game where the bonus missions surpass the main game. It is just so much fun being inside the game. My favourite game from my childhood is Shining Force 2. Pikmin 3 is my favourite adulthood game now. Pikmin 4 is also amazing but I don't like the night missions that much and the sticky cursor gets in the way sometimes. Pikmin 4 feels like it has more maps and play time in comparison. Yes, Pikmin 2 is also my least favourite of the series.

Fun fact: The Deluxe version's "hard" mode is actually the original default difficulty. So the new "normal" mode is actually an easy mode.

One thing I feel like I should mention is that Retro Shooters (or Bumer (Bumer? Bummer? Boomer?) Shooters if you prefer) like Doom, Quake, Dusk, and others are more or less the Sonic of FPS. I mean your character certainly moves faster compared to tactical shooters like Call of Duty, Crysis, and Metro. Those who have played Doom Eternal, Quake, Dusk, and Ultrakill may agree with me.

Why is this the second Pikmin 3 upload one hour apart

Pikmin 2 is easily my favorite game in the franchise and I was left wanting more after finishing it. I loved the increased difficulty of the game. Micromanaging my squad. Figuring out the best ways to traverse the overworlds. Spelunking through the randomly generated caves and having to fight a huge boss at the end was simply epic. The game expanded upon and refined everything from the first game and gave players a truly memorable sequel with tons of replay value. Waiting almost a decade for Pikmin 3 was absolutely agonizing and I was so hyped when it was announced. But when I finally got to play it I was left with nothing but crushing disappointment. This game feels unfinished. It's way too short. The journey is way too linear. The game as a whole was insultingly easy and held the players hand way too much. The controls and lock on feature just plain suck! The interesting treasures were replaced by what you would see at the fruit aisle at your local grocers. The Piklopedia was flat out GONE (until the Deluxe port, but even then it was nowhere near as good compared to Pikmin 2's version). And Nintendo committed the ultimate sin of removing the caves entirely! This is what they're trying to pass off as the sequel to Pikmin 2??? Where is the rest of this fucking game?! How could they get away with releasing this half baked Wii U tech demo at full retail price? Even the first game had more content than this crap! Pikmin 2 may be unfairly hated on because a bunch of braindead Gen-Z'ers with Dandori Issues find it too difficult. But this game is an outright insult compared to the previous games. I would rather play Hey Pikmin! over this absolute joke of a sequel! FUCK THIS GAME!

I do find it annoying when you have to purposely make the game harder for yourself for a challenge. I wish it was more dynamic like zelda where can just not get hearts or resident evil 4 that makes it secretly easier or harder depending on how well youre doing

Pikmin 3 betrays that formula with the aggressive micromanagement, linear and larger stage design and the needlessly cinematic bosses which distract from the microscopic, ecosystemic scale of the first two games, and each game in the series gets steadily worse with each entry
