Trailer dissection and speculation videos are fun on their own, but it's always so much better when that analysis comes from a place of genuine appreciation for the topic. You clearly have a love and dedication to Pikmin, so I'm looking forward to seeing what else you talk about in the lead-up to Pikmin 4 and your series retrospective. I'm sure everyone will learn a lot when that time comes. Really enjoyed this video, Steve.
I really hope they haven't ditched multiple playable captains. Multitasking in 2 and especially 3 felt sooo good. It was so great being able to leave a captain by the onion to pluck pikmin while you're off doing something else. Then you could send them to you with reinforcements with "go here". I also hope caves are a bit more...thought out than in 2. I see no benefit to the procedural generation. When I played 2 for the first time years ago, I didn't even realize the caves were random like that. If I had to replay a cave, I didn't have the layout memorized anyway, and the caves are so samey, that I didn't even notice that it was different. I'd rather the cave layouts be hand crafted to keep the quality up and make them more unique.
One of the reasons I think they're downsizing is because while there are four captains in the trailer, it just doesn't quite make sense to have four playable characters at once. Two or three is the sweet spot I think, so it makes sense that they want to give two characters a shot again with a totally new spin on the concept. I also hope the caves are a little more varied. I honestly completely forgot they were procedurally generated as well. It was probably a cool gimmick back when the game first came out but I don't love it anymore. That being said, as long as the above ground level design continues to improve I won't be disappointed if the caves don't advance that much.
@@wizawhat I agree that four playable captains is too many. It was nice having a third, but it was rare for me to make good use of all three at once. I just hope it's not just a single captain plus Oatchi, as it looks like Oatchi can't do much on its own.
I've only ever tried the Pikmin 3 demo but may end up having to check this one out. Your passion for the series really has me excited and they seem like they would fulfill a unique niche of relaxing problem solving
For me Pikmin 4 is a perfect scenario because it was announced like not even 2 weeks after I started High School and is going to come out in the summer only about a month after the end of Freshman Year. I mean I was like 7 or 8 when I first played it on the Wii U so that gives you an idea of how long it’s been.
I have put together that oatchi will be for scouting areas, something for planning out the next day. Ice pikmin are used to make bridges for the pikmin to take stuff back to the onion. With blue pikmin seeming unnecessary, i think they will be used for going deep underwater. Imagine there's some treasures at the bottom at a giant kiddie pool, the ice pikmin can't freeze it because there's too much water, and oatchi can't dive underwater. The blue pikmin could be used for grabbing those treasures.
the theory of the new playable character being the child of alph and brittany doesn't hold up when you realize that alph and brittany are from koppai but this new captain is from hocotate, you can see that in the fact that this new character has pointy ears, people from koppai have round ears, so yeah the whole theory of koppai and hocotate trading technology doesn't hold up cause every captain we see in the trailer has pointy, hocotatian ears (also the text on the ship says hocotate)
I haven't been so excited for a Nintendo release in years. And although I missed Pikmin 3 with not having a Wii U; I'm more than happy to pick up where I left off. Pikmin 2 was one of my favorite games growing up and I couldn't agree more when you said that this series is at it's best when it's strange. Wacky and surprisingly hopeful will always be the two main ingredients I look for in Pikmin, and I'm smiling ear to ear knowing that's exactly what we'll get. Fantastic work as always.
At least they gave fans who missed out on Pikmin 3 on Wii U a second chance by releasing Pikmin 3: Deluxe Edition on Nintendo Switch. 😃 Pikmin 4 does have some exciting stuff to look forward to, including things returning from Pikmin 2!
WAIT a deal between hocotate and koppaite could be right! They might have made a deal to go back to PNF 404, as we saw in the trailer there were fruit AND treasure, so maybe the koppaites get the fruit and hocotate gets the treasure? Or maybe we use fruit to survive more days and treasure is what we need to repay our debt or whatever we do in Pikmin 4!
Personally I think pikmin 4 will be about you being apart of a rescue team (hence the seemingly trained dog Oatchi) and you're on PNF-404 with the objective to rescue some people who ran into trouble and the other three captains you see in the trailer stay on the big ship and take care of people rescued and other story stuff. Though this doesn't quite explain why you're also grabbing treasures. My other thought is maybe you're a space explorer
I really like that idea of them being a rescue team. Instead of collecting ship parts, treasures, or fruits, you're just collecting castaway captains all across the map that each are their own character. That would be so cool!
@@wizawhat yeah I think some castaways might be playable but some might be npcs you chat with like the daily messages. I do wonder how many there will be and if we'll get a time limit to rescue them before their suits run out of resources
I’ve never played a Pikmin game to present, but hearing you speculate so passionately as a lover of the franchise was very enjoyable, Wiz, thank you for sharing this ✌🏻
2017 - Super Mario Odyssey: I’m the best-looking Switch game! 2019 - Luigi’s Mansion 3: Are you sure about that? 2023 - Metroid Prime Remastered: A new challenger has approached 2023 - Pikmin 4: Hold my Pikmin
Pleased to see someone else who thought that this game looks like a sequel to pikmin 2, whereas 3 was more of a sequel to pikmin 1 (especially 3 deluxe)
i hope this has a coop mode to, loved playing pikmin 3 with my brother. laughing as the asshole fed the guys less so she could get more, laughing at each other for failing. good times
She can't be Alpha and Brittany's child because her ears are like that of Olimar's, hocotate ears, not koppai ears. All of the new characters have pointed ears, koppai ears around rounded
Fun fact: Oatchi is based on an official concept art of an adult bulbear bulbmin that was supposed to serve the same purpose that Oatchi serves, there is a video about it and some other concept pikmin. Edit: Here is the link to the video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pOdtbUBT0Sw.html
Keep these videos going! Can you analyze the bosses of each Pikmin game and their real-world animal counterpart? Also in-game unique behaviors of bosses.
Pikmin 2, in my opinion, is my absolute FAVORITE entry in the series (so far); while I love all Pikmin games very much, I actually liked the brutal dungeons of Pikmin 2... I personally hope Pikmin 4 doubles down on it, but even if they don't, I'd still get Pikmin 4... I'm glad they're doing the Pikmin 2 approach to then series again!
Yeah I definitely agree we're getting more than just the one (or two if the playground is a different area) map we might get the inside of the house as an area after finding certain treasures or maybe find a way into the attic or basement
I sure hope you're right - Pikmin 2 is my favourite Pikmin game by far. The caves and intense bosses were so fun, and playing through them was some of the most fun I had in my childhood. Beyond excited for this game!
I found it quite amazing how much you got wrong versus how much you got right. You understood the all encompassing ideas more than the minute details, which is going to make your analysis of the actual game all the more interesting,
@@shellpoptheepicswordmaster755 yeah but when they made it back in 2013 I'm sure they didn't think that side stories would be a thing, so I don't think they would go to the future to grab that Intel just to put it in.
Correction: The new main Captain is 100% not Alph and Brittany's child since if we analyze her ear shape her ears are completely identical in shape to Olimar's ears in Hey Pikmin so she is definitely a Hocotation, the only captain who doesn't seem to be Hocotation is Collin as his ears are sqaure in shape which doesn't match Hocotation's Pointier ears and Kopaites Rounder Ears also I am 100% sure the other captains will be playable since they seem to be a part of this mission as well and why would they create full on character models and so them with the main captain and stuff if they weren't playable
I slightly predicted this I had a theory since the third game is more like the first than the second The fourth will fit the other even number and be like the second
@@wizawhat I don't want to say "everything" but there is very little about the game that met my expectations. Creatively, it felt like just more of the same, with major steps backwards in many key areas. Visually, I wasn't impressed and had hoped they'd have used the system's extra power to allow more pikmin on screen, but that didn't happen. The thing that probably turned me off the most was that... (now I played the previous games very defensively and took great care to minimize any loses)... The changes to 3's controls and the pikmin AI caused these stupid little buggers to find all sorts of creatively ways to get themselves killed. The extra level of micromanaging caused by this made the game unfun to play.
@@bethanyh1637 Good take, however, there's some issues with your suggestions of pikmin 3. I hope you don't take this seriously, because this is just something i want to talk about. First of all you are probably a purist, which is fine, but i do think it's not gonna make the game do anything to evolve the series all that very much. I think it's confusing you are saying about allowing more pikmin on screen, because isn't it? and the wii u has limitations, so expect it to be understandable. I think the AI thing is taken a bit too seriously, because actually the managing in Pikmin 3, they are near perfect, and monsters/Bulburbs aren't that powerful anymore, and you did say the controls makes the game flawed, but that is different to the ways you play it, and Pikmin dies in all dumb ways, amiright? I disagree with your extra managing take, because Pikmin 2 has likely even more treasure that is annoying to get, however, you are probably a Pikmin 2 lover, i get it. it's okay to dislike a game, but talking it in the wrong ways can make it misleading.
Pikmin 2 is one of my favourite games ever. I see it as one of Nintendo’s highest quality and polished releases, alongside Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door, on the same system. I liked Pikmin 3, it was okay. It felt more like a sequel to the first Pikmin though, which if I’m honest I’m not really into. I really hope 4 is the sequel to 2 that it appears to be, and one I’ve been waiting many, many years for.
Ok crazy theory but hear me out: This is Alphs mother and the game is a prequel to all the Pikmin games. This one taking place before earth was completely wiped out of any human life, so some man made structures still stand.
Who else noticed blue pikmin aren’t in screen when ice are I doubt it but what if blue pikmin are ice pikmin or it’s like the buds kinda and you need blue pikmin to ice ones
Interesting. I love the first game and completed it multiple times. The second game was a bit more of a grind or slog but I did complete it though not with everything. The third game I never completed. Perhaps by that point in my life I just didn't feel like doing the grind. So I'm curious to see what will happen with four.
That's interesting. I would particularly associate Pikmin with grinding, maybe 2, but definitely not three. They're all fairly short games so maybe you just weren't vibing with the design in those two games
I've played an insane amount of Pikmin 3, I'm looking forward to 4 so much! I hope that I'll be able to get a decent amount out of it even though I haven't really played the earlier ones. Edit: I hope 4 will have coop where one player plays the best boy.
I’m certainly worried that the blue Pikmin won’t have a use now, considering the ice Pikmin and Oatchi can interact with water. I hope the blue Pikmin have a better use, unlike the yellow Pikmin.
I wouldn't worry too much as there were plenty of deep water areas for blue pikmin to interact with in Pikmin 3. Blue is one of the core types so I doubt they would really mess with them.
I'm kinda worried about the balance of Pikmin types Blue Pikmin seem to be unlocked _after_ Ice Pikmin Why traverse water with blue Pikmin if Ice Pikmin can freeze it and allow your group to cross regardless of type? Maybe Ice Pikmin can only freeze shallow water? But then again why use Ice Pikmin if Oatchy allows you to traverse these bodies of water regardless of depth?
I very much agree to you about this, you are very embracing on the different looks of pikmin 4. While i like the purist fact you told me, it does show a fact that the pikmin community hasn't changed. I hope a new era of pikmin could be happening, but what do you think?
I think the Pikmin community is bigger than ever before, thanks to the release of Pikmin 3 Deluxe. It's the best selling Pikmin game already which makes me believe that the interest in Pikmin 4 will be higher than any other Pikmin release
It's possible, but I think the history makes it unlikely. I think the reason the Pikmin designers decided not to bring back Purple and White Pikmin for the main story is because, yeah there would be some redundancies, but more importantly having upwards of SEVEN Pikmin types on the field at once would be too difficult to manage, especially with the 100 field limit. If you wanted to have an even party you would barely have enough Pikmin of any single type to fulfill their niche. That's why I think five types is the sweet spot, it allows you to carry 20 of each type.
I hate to be *that* guy, but c'mon Heff. It's modern Nintendo we're talking about. If you honestly think there is going to be an ounce of interesting character depth or lore to this modern Nintendo game, then I simply must point and laugh. It's just going to be another "Oh good gameplay with nonexistant storytelling or writing" that Nintendo is going to continue to act like they have always made, when instead they have proven through nearly every IP they are capable of telling interesting and GOOD stories.
