This is what I try to tell everyone. If you watch Pikmin 1's best ending, you can see that Olimar didn't abuse the Pikmin, but rather he helped them learn how to survive on their own.
Olimar literally revived an extinct species, or at least almost extinct. If you played Pikmin 1 you will know that there were no Pikmin at first, until Olimar inadvertently activated one of the onions, awakening it and generating a ray of hope for the species. Thanks to Olimar the Pikmin returned from extinction and not only that, as seen in the good ending, his help taught them to defend themselves. So Olimar is a hero
I used to prefer to restart a game rather than lose pikmin. Not terribly useful, but that's just how I rolled. And god were some fights ridiculously difficult to win without losing pikmin. Hell, that's one of the reasons I ended up with my forces being 40-60% purple all the time no matter what.
I remembered this recently and had to find it again. I've always interpreted the ending as the last Pikmin, knowing itself to be doomed, making a wish on that star for some kind of help, not for itself but the future of its species--and lo and behold, there comes Olimar's ship. Sort of like when everybody wishes on a shooting star at the end of Paper Mario, and that star IS Mario's little ship thing. Maybe it's literalizing the metaphor, but for me at least it's a powerful idea. And because of this strange, dark little animation, it's a core part of the identity of the Pikmin series for me.
love this unoficial prequel to pikmin 1. its a sad representation of the pikmin before olimar. it explains that pikmin 1 was not a story of slavory but of saving a entire species from extinction.
Folks really don't give Olimar enough credit for just how much he has helped the Pikmin. Even with the casualties along the way, you'll end the game with *WAY* more Pikmin than you started. And ever since the first game, the Pikmin race isn't totally extinct every time you see them. It shows the Pikmin benefit from him every bit as much as he does them. He brought them from the brink of extinction and taught them how to hold on for dear life. This mutualism even continues in Pikmin 3. Sure they're being used to farm fruit but the 3 captains are cultivating their race nonetheless and they outright save the Winged Pikmin from total extinction. Shame there aren't more videos that elaborate on this element.
I know, It is *shameful* that most of pikmin fans sees olimar as "evil-like slave-maker" rather than "the hero that saved little alien species from extinctation".
@@demonpikmin2343 It is especially sad when knowing that Olimar and the Pikmin saving each other is the intention... It is proven already with the lyrics of the official Strawberry Flower songs.
The official Pikmin short films are cute and all, but this right here was is and always will be the OG. This is what playing Pikmin for the first time at 6 years old FEELS like.
I remember seeing this video back when I first started getting into the Pikmin series, and being someone who's played Pikmin 1 to 3, this makes me really sad. You get attached to them, only to have them inevitably fall in battle or in some other way most of the time. But hey, they're fighting and living on for a reason, so their deaths aren't in vain at least. :c
A masterpiece. When I first saw this as a 7 year old I wondered if there would ever be another pikmin short. The way the art conveys the story is outstanding. I would love to see another.
Another interesting note is that it's outright said in Ai No Uta that the Pikmin follow Olimar and the others purely for selfless reasons, they wish to be helpful and never even expect love or respect in return, all because they LLLOVE ya! Makes sense, with them having been saved from near extinction.
I’ve been playing pikmin 2 and every time I see a pikmin get crushed, drown, burn, get electrocuted, poisoned, fall into the abyss, explode, or swallowed by a beast it really makes me feel guilty. Seeing those poor pikmin lose their lives just for captain Olimar. Although it does also warm my heart knowing they actually cared about Olimar. And they worked for him and Louie.
Through Google Translate, the description translates as such: "College work, 4th Academy Awards Animation School of Beijing Film Academy Award for best student work." Pretty awesome!
This is so good I lovely how creepy and eerie this is, the black and white art and it’s sort of old timey feel just adds to this and how you showed to creatures from the pikmins perspective shows how truly terrifying these must be to them and how when there are just the 2 left it’s really gives of a feeling of isolation and them being a alone with no were to run and monsters trying to eat them at everyturn and that choir singing really just adds to it so much great work
Wow Something keeps bringing me back to this video around twice every year, sadly i do not remember when i first watched it, but maybe its the nostalgia, or the very very deep story behind this "Masterpiece". Well anyway to the point, Pikmin will always have a place in my heart along with this, this lonely animation to have sad emotions upon me and you that is if you read this and watched the animation, and i will be ending on this note. Always keep in mind this video-
It's so realistic how this animation with manga-art style represents all the pain, distress, death and suffering the Pikmin have in all the Pikmin saga (Most specifically in Pikmin 1+2, Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4) during gameplay but I don't know why Nintendo promote the Pikmin saga as "cute" games if they're supposed that these are war repressenting Nintendo videogames (And even more this animation was made in the same year as Pikmin 2's release in 2004)
Hello, creator. I want to say that I absolutely love this animation. Everything is perfect, but there is something i'd like to know. It is about the song that played in this animation. I would be very glad if you agree to share us the title of this song. Perhaps, any youtubers/visitors here can help me to find/tell me the title of the song. I want to hear the extended version of this song so very badly. Thank you for your attention.
zihe CG Oh my! You mean, you are unable to remember the title of the song?? Oh no, what should we do? Any youtubers who read this: please help us to find thr title of the song! (It's played in minute 02:25)
Awh, it's ok, red! Pikmin cannot even feel love!!! :) Wait, how is that happy? Well, I mean towards each other . They can love or hate different species from them.
Creation Realm No, Pikmin do feel love, as shown in the song Ai no Uta, which is about Pikmin loving Olimar and wishing that he would give them his love in return.
This is so sad...but why? Pikmin are the most amazing aliens ever, why must they be broughten down in such a sad video? KIll everything my lil' colored carrots
My theory is that before olimar crashed the whole planet was filled with nine million pikmin one day hundreds of pikmin died Maybe surviving pikmin discovered onions and learnt how to use them and pellets The pikmin of each type went into the onions for hideing and they waited for days because they believed that somebody would discover them After pikmin 1 the pikmin killed the queen and king of the bulborbs for revenge because of creating a pikmin massacre.
Pikmin are the most powerful race on the planet but they have to have a strong leader in order to prosper. That is why in the time of Olimar's absence there were not as many Pikmin at the beginning of the second game then there were at the end of the first. It makes you think that in a way all these Hocotate inhabitants coming to the planet and leading them in a way prevents the species from dying out completely. Now if Olimar did not show up then there probably would not be any Pikmin.
I don't know about the game, but this movie is really outstanding. The scene where the last one running and the sequence and detail after that, I can't see it without being deeply moved. Great Work! Yeah this one makes me cry...
It was sad but did anyone notice that at 1:26 the pikmin that squished is the same pikmin that went with the other pikmin? Also I felt bad for the blue pikmin that had crush a bud red pikmin and that same blue pikmin(The red pikmin boyfriend)died and the other one was one of the last ones alive.
This is easily the saddest Pikmin video I've ever seen... and the best. It made me love Pikmin even more. I wonder why I don't play as him in brawl. His playstyle is just too awkward for me.
I read somewhere that all the "predators are actually herbivorous and the Pikmin just so happen to be made of plant matter. Doesnt make this any less horrifying though.
This is pretty damn old, huh? I probably wasn't tech literate enough to have watched this as a fifteen year old at the time it came out. Still, good stuff. It really makes the arrival of Olimar appear as a miraculous heroic saviour, as much as it is a disaster for himself.
Thanks to this video i now understand the story of the pikmin and why they are helping olimar. Thanks for sharing. And dudes... dont hate him... he just showed us a inofficial background about the pikmin
Olimar taught the Pikmin the values of Teamwork. With that, even the toughest enemies can be overcome. This let the Pikmin go from near extinction, to thriving, as we see in Pikmin 2, the first instance of wild Pikmin. In Pikmin 3, they pass this lesson on to the Kopaits, who are then able to save their planet using this lesson.
That...was....BEAUTIFUL! I really liked that. It's very cool. :) That's a good explanation of how Olimar just saw one Pikmin in the beginning. Very sweet story here~
The argument against that of course would be the massive number of pikmin seen at the end of the game but this could be explained by Olimar's presence-under his leadership many predators were killed off causing the pikmin population to jump When Olimar returns in Pikmin 2 the mass number of pikmin have dwindled back down to the scarce numbers they were before, showing that without his leadership they could not dominate
also this will make the next time I play this game so much more satisfying because I will remember every last pikmin they mercilessly murdered and I will make them pay.
Chuggaa should respect him a little more don't you think i mean he's only a trooper because of his loss and now he wants to murder every last demon that murdered his friends but i do think that steve deserves a little more recognition from Chuggaa
here is the translated version of the desc College work , access to Beijing Film Academy Animation School 4th Academy Award for best student work award
not me. it just shows a much darker and deeper side of the whole story.. how defenseless the pikmin were before olimar.. how olimar found them through deactivated onions that spurt out a single seed, which only happens when a species goes "extinct".. and then when the game ends and the pikmin are able to organize themselves on their own and fight. it's just a new spin on the cute franchise.
