Pilatus P-3 Formation Flight through the Swiss Alps!

Together with a very experienced lady pilot I flew in an old proven Pilatus P-3 through the Swiss Alps! Two other Pilatus P-3 were also with us, so it came to a sensational formation flying. It was an incredibly fantastic flying experience, with magnificent views of the Swiss mountains. Flights took place at St Stephan, an old former military airfield in the middle of the Bernese Oberland. We did two more rolls, an indescribably great feeling of freedom.
This Pilatus P-3 was manufactured in Stans in 1957, a piece of Swiss aviation history. Until 1995, the aircraft flew with the Swiss Air Force as the A-815. Since the withdrawal from the military service, it has been privately operated as HB-RCQ. It is equipped with a Lycoming GO-435-C2A2 engine, has 250 hp and has a cruising speed of 252 km/h.

Now that was a great video, and what a fun experience that must have been! Super cool you were able to get up in this PC-3, and so much more special to have it a formation flight with two more of these beauties. Looks like a special little air field to fly out of and those mountain scenes were awesome. Oh, and those rolls looked like fun too! Thanks for taking us along on this special flight Matt.

Thanks for this nice video. I have a few hours in A-815 (and some of the others) back from my days in the Swiss Air Force. Flying out of Locarno/Magadino, I still remember our excursion to Samedan, flying solo one way.

I hadn't heard of that cute little plane before. Must have been one of the earliest designs from Pilatus. Excellent visibility from the cockpit. Has a pretty good rate of roll! And nice to get some selfies of yourself! 😁

Thank you Andrei. This aircraft was manufactured in 1957. So yes, it is one of the earlier built Pilatus aircraft. But it is definitely a most wonderful aircraft to fly with. Absolutely great flight experience!

How amazing would that be! I love the P3. I always see them at LSZL. The runway is short and they always seem to take off with a very small rate of climb unlike other aircraft... Great sounding flat six!

Matt my good friend, wow what a blessing to get to fly in this plane & what a beautiful view of the alps & all of the other scenery. Reminds me of a cross between our training fighters the Texan Ta6/8 which is slower than the PC 3, & the P51 which is much faster than the PC 3. Couple of questions, did the pilot giver her reason for her call handle of Unicorn?, also, do you have to manually lean your fuel at higher altitudes( I'm guessing) or is fuel leaning done automatically since it is fighter( I'm assuming by design) with piston/carburetor?, just curious pal. Hi Steve, always great to hear from you my good friend. It is a Lycoming GO-435-C2A2 engine with 250 horsepower. Six-cylinder boxer engine, Carburetor. I think all those peoples have a special name, hers is unicorn. Not exactly sure why but I think it is very suitable and a lovely name :) It definitely was most spectacular to fly in this Pilatus P-3. The view of the Swiss Alps was marvelous.

@@matthiashaenni Matt, yes, everyone usually has a call name like hers was unicorn, it usually means or stands for something. Mine was sidewinder( like the rattlesnake) my middle name is Wayne, so swl, name sidewinder for my first 2 initials, flight looked great, God bless brother, btw, did you or were you able to find out if the PC3 was a manual or auto fuel lean?, some planes were being converted to auto in that time frame if I'm not mistaken ?

Hi Steve. Thanks for your questions. Like Matt already wrote its a Lycoming Engine with a carburetor which automatically leaning the fuel by the altitude. And by the way, my name Unicorn I got from my wingman. Don’t ask really why unicorn…it’s a longer story! 😅 Greetings Natascha (Unicorn)

You are a very nice lady & good,safe pilot, Matt & Jesse are my best friends in regards to Aviation videos, I have a few in the food networks also as I like to cook. I'm 58, majored in Aviation at a university in the U.S. starting in 1981, but I am grounded due to health conditions & cannot pass our FAA physicals. Danke vielmals! Flüge kannst Du auf Winlgy buchen: www.wingly.io/de/flights/1912430 Die wunderschönen P-3 sind hauptsächlich im Tessin stationiert. Du kannst also von dort aus fliegen, muss auch wunderschön sein!! Flüge ab Sankt Stephan oder Buochs sind eher selten und meist nur ganz kurz im Sommer buchbar. Viel Spass!
