My uncle told me the reason for the long nose was because the engine was so light compared to a combustion engine it had to be moved further forward to get the correct cg for the wing.. It also allowed a better usable range of the cg for loading of goods and moving things around.. I actually always wondered why it had such a disproportionately long nose, well I guess I know now lol...

Yes, that's right. Same thing with some piston engine Cessnas converted into props, you can't miss their long nose !

@@asthalis It's 'sarcasm'! I owned a half-scale Corsair a few decades ago and I couldn't see anything over the nose! I'd s-turn while taxiing, periodically dip the nose on climb out. But landing and take off was accomplished by looking out the side for runway orientation. After a while, I learned to land without a final approach: a descending turn and roll out on the runway.

one of the most glorious sounds I've ever heard is a PC-6 startup. one of the most impressive sights is a PC diving to and straightening for a runway landing at 200ft . Irish Parachute Club, Edenderry, Eire

marksandsparks1 Blue Skies from DeLand. So happy to have jumped from one for a few weeks here. Our DZ-owned Porter crashed on take-off some time back but we borrowed one for a short time later on.

We had two with the Police in Oman. (A40-AK & A40-AL I think in 1975/6) Great aircraft! When we were at the factory they demonstrated their 'steam rocket' for even shorter take-off. Magic!

@@mikeh2520 HI Mike. The 'steam rocket' was a tubular device below the fuselage where the water was super heated by the engine and then released at high pressure to produce added power which made the Porter almost virtually leap into the air without pollution.

I absolutely love the ability to back up! I have a Seabee with reversing prop. But 'Mermaide of the Skye' will never take off like that!

Made that way. If you have two spare parts (fixed surface and control panel), you can replace left or right hor. stabilizer and elevator or ver. stabilizer and rudder!
