Takes a lot of guts to not just talk about your "learning moments" but to show the actual video. Incredibly humble, amazing pilot, great teacher. Keep up the great work!
What I like about aviation is the openness of everyone involved. I can't imagine another industry where professionals so openly demonstrate and talk about when messed up.
Heck yea, My instructor said the first thing one should do after really screwing the pooch is go tell someone, at worst he said you will find you ain't the only one to ride that particular pooch and at best you'll keep someone else from it.. usually a win-win.
Can you imagine how much could be learned and the lives that could be saved if all pilots were humble enough to show these videos of their mistakes? Thank you my friend 👍🏽
I don’t think I have ever had this much respect for another pilot in a long time. Thank you for sharing these experiences with us. You make us all better for it. Safe travels.
Still remember that landing at Arlington. Was a rough one, I remember looking at the grave yard right next to the runway thinking, "wow, thats an odd place for a graveyard", then BAM, we hit like a rock lol.
This was your finest video yet! Knowing that mishaps occur to even the most accomplished pilots is a great service. Helps keep the ego in check. You are truly a humble pilot! Thank you!
NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE COULD POST THERE MISTAKES ONLINE FOR THE WHOLE WORLD TO SEE, IT REALLY TAKES AN AMAZING AMOUNT OF CHARACTER AND HUMILITY TO LOOK BEYOND YOUR MISTAKES FOR THE SAKE OF PEOPLE WHO ARE LEARNING TO FLY! I CANT EVEN BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW TRULY INSPIRING YOU ARE, AND I TRULY THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMPLETE HUMBLENESS, ESPECIALLY IN SUCH TOUGH TIMES. GOD BLESS YOU, AND I THANK YOU!!!
Love how you recognize your mistake and get back on it and correct, landed short once, incurred a terrible bounce, saved it then was seething about my foul up.Regrouped and did 3 more landings, lesson learned.Would fly with you anytime.
It’s very easy criticize but this guy has been clear and humble about his mistakes. Actually nobody wants to talk about their mistakes. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 great job
I appreciate you sharing these. Too many RU-vid pilots are creating a false reality in their flying but you always keep it real and it helps educate fellow pilots like me so thank you.
Thanks for sharing your mistakes! Many pilots don't like to recognize when they're wrong, but in aviation, you cannot get that luxury. Learning from others mistakes saves lives.
Thank you for putting your pride aside and sharing your experiences with us! If I learned anything here, it’s to value my bad landing experiences more than the good ones.
Thnx for share this video. There are two ways to learn: studying and erring. You are a great pilot and I know that to become one you have had to make these mistakes. This makes you great.
Remarkable video! As one who has flown the remotes is all corners of the globe, I have to say that I truly understand this fellow pilot and like a brother. We have had many saves in our days and it's only a split second sometimes between a smile and a frown. I just don't break my own rules, my minimums are just that and there is a reason for it. About 25 years ago, I found myself in the soup in a non instrument aircraft after taking off in early morning fog. There were several water towers and other obstructions that could have taken my life that day but, God was good and I did pray hard. That day is ever etched in my mind my foolish mistake of trusting a WX report rather and talking off too early nearly cost me my life. This video is one of the best that I have seen and it should help us all to remain humble and honest with ourselves. Thank you , Backcountry182
Great video. Had me remembering some of my own humbling moments. “Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards.” ― Vernon Sanders Law
I really like that most pilots have this introspective view and enjoy learning from their mistakes. Humility will only help us in the end. Thank you for posting this great teaching videos.
Thank you for sharing your lessons learned. I noticed you said you went back and tried them again. What a way to learn. This is a great example of what we should all do as pilots. Learn from our mistakes and share! This encourages me to follow your lead. Also, I fly mainly in the SE US, and I’m jealous of your backcountry flying!
I had a hard landing one night and I should not have tried a new technique I had read about which was trying to pull the oak completely back on landing and I ended up dropping above the runway I'm not sure how high I was but the airplane dropped and hit hard likely no damage
I really appreciate that you've put all these examples up onto RU-vid for others to learn from. Really excellent sharing of your experiences getting into and out of these challenging strips. Thanks very much.
Thank you for posting these clips. I'm early in my PPL training (11hrs) and still struggling a bit with my recent landings, which adds a little discouragement to the mental learning aspect. I very much appreciate you sharing these, which promote improved error recognition and correction. Thank you
Brave to show your mistakes and shows you value to learn from them rather than hide them. Mistakes are more valuable than all the things that went right, we can all learn from this. Thank you for sharing and displaying good airmanship.
Thank you for your great video. Takes a lot of guts to put all your mistakes out there. I'm replaying all my bad landings in my head. Humbling. Thank you for sharing. Good lessons here.
Thanks for sharing your mistakes. I certainly made plenty. I had almost finished my private pilot's license before health issues grounded me. Looking back now on my cross-country solos I'm not sure I was actually ready. 40 hours as a pilot had taught me how to fly an airplane in the most basic sense. Throw in all the technical aspects, weight and balance, radio and airport procedures, navigation, on and on. I felt like I had developed a bit of knowledge and skill but if anything really challenging had come up I have to wonder if I could have handled it. It's a monumental task to be a good pilot.
I really like the way you are sharing your experiences with the rest of us! This video is a great example of a collection about bad happenings and i think it will help everyone of us to learn and partly avoid bad landings and other dangerous moments! I thank you very much for a pretty cheap flying lesson!!!
36 years ago my examiner handed me my certificate and said " This is a license to learn ". I haven't quit doing what he said all these years later. Excellent job on this video. Doran Jaffas Central Lower Michigan USA
Bro I just gotta say, the fact that you actually upload your own bad landings, and admit they were bad, is probably the most humble thing I’ve witnessed a fellow pilot do. Almost every pilot I’ve encountered acts like these situations do not or can not happen to them, nor have they ever been in one. That type of shit makes me not wanna discuss the bad landings that I’ve had, because it seems like the result would be that I’m a horrible pilot, a danger to myself and others. It’s basically a voodoo topic with a lot of pilots. I love seeing shit like this. You got my subscription.
As a Pacific Northwest lad, I lived near a rural 1200 foot grass airstrip where my Dad kept his Piper J-3 Cub. A Cessna 180 was also there. The 180 never had a problem taking off but it made a terrific howl! The noise would echo off the surrounding woods. I loved that. Eventually the runway length was extended a bit into an adjacent cow pasture, in the process intersecting a local roadway. Yellow signs on either side of the extension read "Airplane Crossing." Once a pilot from the nearby Naval Base landed a Beech T-34 Mentor. On takeoff, he used that entire length of the runway and I really thought he wasn't going to get off in time. He did. But I can guess he was thinking the same as me.
Many thanks for sharing, truly enjoy your perspective of continual learning! 🏆Commentary, narrative and video are simply incredible. Happy Landings!!! 😎✊
Congratulations Backcountry182, this is how we (pilots, race car drivers, etc...) learn. Thank you for humbly sharing your "lessons learned", you have a lot of courage and I applaud your honesty. Fly safe, Ciao, L
I was very impressed with your video, hardly any pilots have that sincerity. Nothing better than training to improve your performance, I always say that a pilot is like an Olympic athlete: can never stop training! As you said, in aviation you never stop learning, it is a fool who "thinks" knows everything. Congratulations on the video, continue training always. Moacir Helicopter pilot for 42 years, always training and learning.
Thank you. People often don't understand why I want to read about accidents or mistakes made (or watch videos like this one) but as a pilot, the best thing we can do is to keep learning and try to determine what you could have done in the same situation, or how you would react to unforeseen problems (like iced over grass, etc.)
Even as a non-pilot who loves all things aviation, I can still appreciate your willingness to post a few mess-ups for the sake of preventing others’ similar predicaments. And just taking in that breathtaking scenery from a video - I can’t imagine what it’s like for real. Wow!
Thank you for sharing your not so fancy moments! I almost killed myself because of bad judging and pure young cocky stupidity. I was the pilot in comand, and had all the responsibility. I tried to find other things to blame but myself. I found out quite fast, that I was the one to behold responsible. That also goes for ALL other things in life. Again, thank you for sharing! Keep up your good work Sir.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I'm glad that all turned out alright for all those flights. Thank you for making these videos. See you around the NW.
Excellent video and thanks for sharing this. Many pilots wouldn't not admit or openly share their mistakes, but you do in an attempt to help others and improve safety.
Great video. Bravo for 3 takeoffs and landings after the bad landing! When the horse bucks you out of the saddle, get back on and ride again. May God give you favorable winds!
Fantastic video and some excellent learning points for all of us. That first one was a bad situation of your own making but the decision making and execution after touchdown were superb. You could have panicked and made things so much worse. You kept your brain on the problem and saved the day. Outstanding!
Thanks again for sharing your "moments". Learning and sharing this is very important to others, to be humble, learn and not simply forget mistakes! Thanks man!
Nicely done video. It takes a real aviator to lay out their errors in front of everyone. Who knows, you may have saved lives by doing that. Deepest respect for your flying. Great job!
Thank you so much for posting this! Makes me feel less ashamed about some of my own sub-optimal landings. It's a regrettable part of learning, but if we're too ashamed we risk not learning the lessons.
It’s shows your character the fact that you are showing your mistakes may we all be humble like you. Thanks for sharing the why as well. Fly safe friend !!!!!
I would love to learn but I don't have at least $10K lying around. I am stuck to the simulators for the long-haul. Though, I look forward to FS2020. It looks great but more importantly all the weather and plane simulation that seems to be more advance than anything else.
@pbilk1 I flew one (on average) lesson a month and sold my blood plasma to take flight lessons. It took me two years of consistency after a six year(s) hiatus, before I finally got my ppl. If you want it bad enough you'll find a way.
Thanks for sharing your mistakes. I'm just getting started, but I am determined to get my pilot's license. It helps a lot to see people admit to their mistakes instead of just making excuses. I will be rewatching this video many times so that I can absorb the lessons you're teaching.👍
Thank you for sharing your mistakes as well as your successes. We can learn from both, and sometimes it takes a bigger man to share his mistakes than to show off his victories. Thanks for sharing both.
Wow, what a fantastic video! I want to get involved with SE mountain flying, so this was a great watch. Thanks for sharing your mistakes, that definitely takes a fantastic pilot to be so humble and willing to put it put there like that.
Great collection of honest mistakes / miscalculations - thanks for sharing, all very relevant, good lessons - from a B737 Line Training Capt in Europe 👍
That was a great video! What a great wonderful, humble attitude. Thanks so much for sharing. Have a wonderful day! I’m taking lessons. I’m really close to being able to solo. It’s still a struggle for me to land. And I will get there pretty soon I believe. I enjoyed watching your video and getting some tips to use.
Thank you sir for not only talking about what you did wrong, but showing us what it looked like from your seat All off airport pilots need to learn from your mistakes. Thanks again and keep the shiny side up
