I did that the other day in front of my grown kids... I didn't mean to.. It just rolled on out as if Tony was right there with me! (and I guess he was, wasn't he!) They looked at me like I was nuts. But then, I've seen that look MANY times before...

The Dalea and Eysenhardtia look so similar growing together. It's hard to imagine the Pilostyles isn't harming the plant, the stems are totally covered in flowers. I will be keeping my eye out for new east coast Australia Pilostyles, I see we have 3 species here but all occur only in the west.

Drones are not just great for getting awesome footage, don't underestimate their usefulness as a scouting tool. I take mine fishing, hunting and foraging and its awesome. I can explore a whole section of river and know where the salmon are instead of spending half the day hiking in heavy waders. Or explore a burn and find the likely spots morels might be growing. I haven't gone this far yet, but the camera is plenty good enough to spot bedded down deer, and it's still legal to do so here. I know whitewater paddlers who use them to scout rapids on unfamiliar rivers. In your case, with some careful piloting there's no reason you couldn't scout for your target species before hiking out and save some time searching. I realize it sounds like it goes against the very spirit of being out in nature and away from modern distractions and whatnot, but it's just a tool like any other. Nothing wrong with making your time in the wilderness a little more efficient, maybe a little safer, maybe a little more fun if you like technology.

I love your enthusiasm for sequence analysis - it fuels my will to work on my dissertation when I get tired and lose interest in it. You do have to be careful with what databases you’re using to BLAST, though. Many of them use putative sequences generated by rough sampling and predicted sequence assembly. Real pain in the ass. I’m trying to compare CYP79A1 and CYP703, two “recently” diverged P450s. One codes for an enzyme critical in the production of sporopollenin - a component of the dermis of pollen, that helps to make it resistant to desiccation and UV damage. The other codes for an enzyme that is used to produce dhurrin, a defensive cyanogenic glycoside famous for being the culprit of cattle poisoning. I work in Sorghum, but it helps to get a phylogenetic spectrum that encompasses more of Plantae :P
@RalfStephan

Up to some 5 years ago some/many whole genome sequences of animals/parasites in Genbank were contaminated with bacterial sequences because uploaders didn't check. I did an unpublished survey on that. But now NCBI apparently checks all uploads. Also contaminating bacteria species are mostly known so it's even easier.
@MrTheWaterbear
@MrTheWaterbear 2 года назад
@@RalfStephan Yup, always a good idea to screen your BLAST outputs for known contaminants :) Reading the methodology is also important, because plants are criminally under-sequenced. It’s expensive to do, because of polyploidy and generally massive genomes, and an incredible array of genera, species, and varieties. Therefore, a lot of plant sequences are predicted, putative sequences. Which aren’t usable as material in publication, let alone in a thesis or dissertation. Even rarer is expression data - but that which is available (mainly crop plants such as Barley, and Arabidopsis) is superb. Hope your work is going well.

Just a few guesses. Number one. Pollinators. If you have an outdoor cat, or dog that comes home covered in burrs, or jewelweed seeds you know what I am talking about. Number two. I notice that it is windy where you are filming. Maybe the seeds disperse like fungal spores, and enter through the base stem, or roots. Just shooting in the dark.

I've been a plant lover my whole life.. and now im in love with you.. you are the mist fantastic person in the whole world.. to me that is.. you ever come to Hawaii to do some episodes on plants here.. I would love to just hear what you got to say about some things here.. from native species to introduced.. Hawaii has a contentious relationship with plants.. most of our plants were introduced.. some are socially acceptable while other people have basically gone to war over certain plants.. I've seen some of your episodes where you got commentary on invasive species and whatnot.. maybe you already have done an episode here in hawaii and I just haven't seen it yet.. if that's the case please reply with a link.. otherwise.. I insist you make your way to Hawaii island specifically.. granted all the islands are different and you could hit them all up if you wanted... there's a lot of plant related things to talk about here.. from botanical gardens with fantastic species.. to the arboretum.. Hawaii island alone has nearly all the climate zones.. which is why I love it here.. the plants here have an intriguing history as well.. from the canoe plants.. the plants that polynesians brought here.. which tells a lot about where they've been.. I say they even though I am part Hawaiian aka polynesian.. so they are my ancestors.. but anyways.. it's all so fascinating to me.. I've never been outside the country as I'm a felon.. it's a long bogus story.. I should have never plead guilty to a computer hacking charge.. I know nothing about computers.. anywho.. so stupid.. I hate myself for not standing up for myself.. I was just a dumb kid that was basically scared into taking a plea bargain.. that shit fucked my life up before it really got started.. but yeah.. it probably also inspired to leave Skagit County washington and make my move to Hawaii. . One of many ridiculous incidents.. I haven't been back to my homeland in 10 years maybe.. it actually gives me the creeps being there so I may never go back.. that's basically a warning to anyone and everyone to not get caught up in Skagit County Washington.. but back to plants.. and Hawaii county where I now live.. I bought land because I got sick of carrying all my plants around from place to place.. so here I am setting roots.. I guess.. me my 3 dogs.. 2 of them were magically conceived on my birthday and born approximately 2 months later the same day we had a massive unprecedented eruption here in Leilani estate's. . May 3rd.. the same day as the owner of their father's birthday.. doggy daddy is the same breed as your dog.. none of this was intentional.. hence why I say magically.. but yeah.. plants are cool.. speaking of which I should get out to my garden.. I'm trying to grow a castle with non native invasive species that are already established here.. the only draw back I've noticed is the rats.. it makes so much space for rats to creep around where cats can't get.. and they are eating all my passiflora right at the nectary.. or whatever it's called.. I have a collection of passiflora.. many I lost after the 2018 eruption sequence.. turns out that the "vog" aka volcanic fog from the high humidity and Sulphur content in our atmosphere from the volcano.. anywho.. the fog was acting as a natural fumigation and the bio controls weren't working too well because of it.. so after that eruption the Sulphur dioxide levels dropped with less gasses being emitted.. there was no vog to protect my acid loving passiflora Tarminiana or tripartite not sure.. whatever it is it's also known as banana poka here.. anywho all mine just died after the vog went away for that year or more before the lava came back to halema'uma'u.. without the vog the states biocontrols actually worked.. for a minute.. life on a volcano.. I'm half tempted to look for some fruit to try growing it again now that I've got some sort of equilibrium in my garden since the funk ravaged my yarden.. which brings me to that topic on invasive species again.. not only is it part of hawaiian culture even as a weed technically but it has a local name... like I said banana poka.. or passiflora suberosa which is found at old Hawaiian fishing villages.. it's also locally known as hoehoe haole.. aka the corky stemmed passiflora.. it was used as cordage for hukilau.. which is also a very Hawaiian traditional fishing method.. more like fish farming.. wrangling.. oh God I need to get off of here.. im having a hard time getting out of bed today...I need to let my chickens out.. peace.. ✌
