We usually only laugh when a pilot makes a cabin announcement on frequency - even the other pilots give them a hard time when this happens.

I’ve been flying for the airlines for 23 years and this is all good info. I would say that being prepared and familiar with airports and procedures is huge. Knowing what to expect ahead of time helps everyone. 👍🏻

I'm only a flight simmer, but I think that's really good advice. In simulators, I find myself trying to study the layout of airports from the map available in-game so I don't get confused by the atc calls. And in reality it's even more complex than in a sim. Nowadays pilots have apps and tablets they use for planning and I think that's a great aid.

Technically, we’re not allowed to use “at your discretion” when issuing altitude clearances anymore. It’s now: “when ready, climb/descend...”. We still use “climb/descend/altitude your discretion” with VFR in/out of YBW when you, as a controller, couldn’t care less what altitude a pilot wants to fly at. Saves a little bit of back-and-forth on the frequency.

This is fantastic Emilie, thank you. I sometimes struggle with ATC and i'm not able to pick out or jot down all the information in one go, so I end up having to kindly ask them to repeat. In those situations I basically struggle to hear clearly and/or keep up with the instructions and my brain then just hears noise. I probably need to get used to the sound of radio chatter and get better at focusing on the important parts, but either way that short form at the end of the video is really going to help.

Great video as always Emilie. I had my first solo last Sunday at cybw. I can tell you I was more nervous talking to ATC than the flight itself. The circuit started well but when I contacted tower on the downwind they asked me to extend it. Now I am heading for Edmonton! After a couple of minutes, hearing nothing I asked if I should continue to extend, and they said, “oh, you can turn base now”... so I had a long final 😀. But nailed the landing and got the bucket treatment when I returned to the Flying Club. A day I will never forget

I really enjoyed this style of video with the Q&A I think the questions are really interesting and your answer as a pilot is a cool insight to see. It’s super informative and you’re really knowledgeable and I hope there can be more of these Q&A videos with different themes! Another idea which may be a stretch is to do a sit down interview (kind of like Captain Joe did) with one of your favourite controllers and I think it would be so cool to see you two chat and talk about experiences! Especially the question of what annoys ATC coming from a controller cause I’m really curious! And also at the end it’s cool to see how pilots take notes on clearances cause I always wondered what they write! Also thanks for reading this far if you did and I just have one more question. I hear PDC and they sometimes say this instead of the full clearance. How does this work is it a shorthand thing?

I did my ppl solo at LFRC Cherbourg in France. I took off on Rwy 28 which meant a full runway backtrack. Tower knew I was first solo. As I took off a local charter KingAir bound for Paris asked for departure from Rwy 10 . This request was cleared and he started to roll as I prepared for my base turn. This all took place in French. I was simply instructed to "make my heading 360" He meant make an orbit. I understood what was going on from observation, but in his case local language atc comms was a Fail....

Dallas/Fort Worth ATC here. Great video! Different things annoy different controllers. For me, it's when a pilot cold calls me and gives me ALL the information on the initial call. Call with callsign first and wait for a response. Then go into all the details. Questions from pilots regarding their instructions are not annoying though. If you're not sure what you're supposed to be doing, ask for clarification. Even if you get a response that sounds a little annoyed. I assure you, the controller would be much more annoyed if you don't do what they are expecting because you were confused with the instructions. Yes, we absolutely laugh at you sometimes lol. BUT we laugh at ourselves and each other more because we talk a lot more on the radio and make mistakes too. We have just become a lot more comfortable making those radio mistakes.
@pilotedgeATC

Good insight and analysis, Emily! Although, maybe Canada’s ops are a bit different, but per 4-3-20 in the AIM regarding switching to ground after exiting the runway: “Immediately change to ground control fre- quency when advised by the tower and obtain a taxi clearance.” This is a common mistake that pilots make often (real world and on our online network), but it’s important to know the correct procedure because the tower controller may have a reason to keep you on their frequency (traffic, reduce ground’s workload, etc...)

I didn’t realize so many ppl have questions about ATC aside from “are you the person with the flashlights”. Pilots asking questions to clarify is essential. I just saw a flight plan where the pilot put “please speak slowly” in the remarks....a good idea for pilots not used to a fast paced control environment.

Love my job!!!! Love working with pilots: new, vets, GA, commercial, corporate, and military. The only thing that ever gets to me are “Cold Calls”. In other words, calling us and only saying who we are and who you are (especially when it’s slow and we’re not busy)(i.e. O’Hare Ground, Citation 1-2-1 Charlie Mike?). Say who you want to talk to, who you are, where you are, and what you want. Saves us a few transmissions (i.e. O’Hare Ground, Citation 1-2-1 Charlie Mike, Signature ramp ready to taxi with information Alpha). We are trained to handle multiple tasks at once and to be on the ready for the next call, so you don’t need to “Cold Call” just to get our attention!
@elpiloto100
@elpiloto100 3 года назад
Interesting! I wouldn't have thought cold calls are annoying. The equivalent is when you call someone on the phone, you don't just go "Hello Mike, can you do this-and-that for me?" right when someone picks up the phone. You say "Hello" just to make sure you have the other person's attention first. Also, it just feels rude, so if the airspace is not busy, I usually make the initial call by saying "O'Hare Ground, good morning. Citation 1-2-1 Charlie Mike".
@azayasund
@azayasund 3 года назад
@Edmund completely understand where you’re coming from, but aviation is different. We operate off of prescribed phraseology, so a little different than having a normal conversation with someone. If we had to acknowledge every aircraft just to get them to say what they wanted, the time lost could affect other aspects of our job. Most pilots are great about this, but I’m noticing a trend of pilots who use the time to think about what they want to say instead of just saying it. Best practice is think about what you want to say, practice it before you key up, then key up with your request.
