The incident occurred on July 2, 2021 at around 02:30 local time. The plane landed in the ocean about 3 km off Kalaeloa Airport, west of Honolulu.
The cause of the accident is not yet known. According to initial reports, the aircraft appears to be a 46-year-old Boeing 737-200F, registered N810TA, operated by Rhoades Aviation in Transair colors.
According to CNBC, the 737 cargo plane had engine trouble shortly after takeoff from Honolulu and had to turn back before performing an emergency landing procedure near the Hawaiian coast.

The American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the crash, stating that two pilots were rescued.
"The pilots had reported engine failure and were trying to return to Honolulu when they were forced to launch the plane," the FAA said in a statement. According to preliminary information, the US Coast Guard rescued both crews. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the matter.
