Sorry Bro, but in Advanced Flight Model, you ABSOLUTELY have ground effect. At about 1 meter AGL is where Ground Effect is very pronounced. You need to be flying AFM. Look it up, RT Dynamics makes the Arma AFM flight model (RotorLib) and as someone who came from X-Plane I can tell you it is highly accurate flight model. Of course nothing is perfect and it's not like DCS where everything is canon, but Arma is not meant to be an ultra realistic flight sim where you have to flip a million switches etc.

The amount of precision I get when flying with my hotas is borderline surgical compared to mouse and keyboard any day. The real challenge is setting everything up in a way to where you can still access your mouse and keyboard quickly and comfortably in the event that you have to ditch your aircraft.

I have to respectfully disagree here, keyboard + mouse is far superior to HOTAS when it comes to helis in ARMA. For realism, sure, go with a joystick setup, but not for functionality. The issue is default key binding in ARMA, trying to emulate a joystick with the keyboard. Use the mouse for that instead, and you're sorted. There are some good videos out there that demonstrates different keybinds, I use the setup recomended by CallMehTOMMEH and I've never used my HOTAS since. Headtracking though, that's number one on your purchase list, it's as much of a game changer as everyone says. I use a homemade solution here that works fine for me, but I suppose TrackIR is better (less hassle for sure).

I hope Drewski sees this. There is another TrackIR from a company called TrackHat that are based in the United Kingdom around $70 or even cheaper compared to the price of normal TrackIR around $300. They are 3D printed and much stronger and they have wired wireless and hat versions of their track IR products hence their name. They use a PS3 camera without a infrared filter in it to track the IR light so if you have a 3D printer PS3 camera lying around you make this for a few dollars if you buy the lights and are confident in your building skills. I will say the software side of things isn't as polished as TrackIR but does everything it needs to do especially for their price. I will warn that they did announce the global supply of PS3 camera's are basically gone and they still haven't announced what camera they are going to use next.

Can’t imagine any sim flying without TrackIR. Have one VIRPIL product - rudder pedals. Outstanding piece of hardware. VKB Sim joystick is a great and not-to-costly joystick. Have used this setup for several thousand hours of Helo flying in Arma, both standard and advanced flight model. Also used for MS 2020 pflight sim (with additional control panels). 30 year private pilot and AC builder (including one rotorcraft), and I find this setup to be VERY adequate and satisfying.
