I love VR I play standalone and PCVR but honestly, I’m a little surprised that they are still updating the hardware for PCVR the way they do. Other than racing Sims it’s very rare to get good PCVVR titles. Seems like the modding community are the ones keeping it alive. I wished developers were pushing software the way some companies are pushing hardware.
That's the only thing I use VR for lol Once I started sim racing in VR I could never go back to a screen, but all the updates to the hardware are so worth for me Can't wait for the day where it just looks damn near real

Really pleased i took the early order plunge / leap of faith on day 2 (couldnt get on site for day1) Awaiting shipping of my LD light (no controllers) Hopefully in next couple of weeks. Then the shuffle begins as the G1 & G2 move down the pecking order. my 7900xtx and 3090 systems may well be the limiting factorsfor full race sim enjoyment out of the box. but PC upgrade season will soon be here afterall. interesting, I've got my bigscreen beyond so I don't feel all that strongly that I should upgrade, (especially as I already had all the extras) but if I didn't have that already I'd seriously think about this. I'm hoping it does well and I'll keep an eye out for a sale in case it drops into that impulse buy territory. That and I kinda still want a psvr2.... but choices are good right?
I'll be waiting for a more in depth review, with a more comprehensive set of tests. Very pro pimax dude right here, and personally I don't trust his opinion.
didn't he make a video saying buy the bigscreen beyond over the pimax crystal though like a week ago. i just think he's super into this hobby but also scared to upset his sponsors which in this case is the manufacturer of said headset. if you do research it does seem like pimax makes the better headsets right now sadly ..these things are simply way too bulky and overpriced in my opinion.

And in my opinion, if this headset was stunngly good, this dude would of been squeeking like a parrot saying how good it was. But I got the feeling he wasn't really excited about it. Like.....yeah yeah good.....but not amazing. I get a feeling pimax has adapted the somewhat failed pimax crystal 1.0 version to boost its massive sales losses. Instead of reworking and redesigning the whole unit, they just simply stripped it bare. Amazon insider has told me they received returns like crazy in the cystals. I'm betting all those returns got bulk shipped back to china to have all the units stripped and cleaned and made into the light versions. Pimax had to claw back all these return losses, and then dish it back out as the cystal light.
Sebastian has big insights and talks Chinese with CEO directly and gave big big critics on Pimax roadmaps, promises and their hardware already! Maybe he sounds exciting but why? We are coming from a big bulky Pimax Crystal to a more light weight version. We have tons of Crystal videos. Actually this is just the version without the battery lol. So I admire him to see and describe so many details. Also: VR is subjective taste because you can't really record the 3D display experience and so on.
But when you think good triple A games will come to Steam because what we have now is just a handful and nothing came in the last year. So why buy beter headset while the games stay behind
If I’m not mistaken … Pimax still don’t have motion reprojection working … correct? If that’s the case then it’s still a deal breaker for me for MSFS as the Q3 might not have the visuals but with ASW (meta or VD) it’s buttery smooth and I can’t go back to not having this option!
geometry distortion was a big problem on the pimax crystal for me,so this is again is a no go for me..A pitty.. i hope samsung or maybe a quest 3 pro will come
Seems like it's a better headset than the original crystal tbh, only thing making me hold out hope for the OG is the wigig module for wireless. If you play flight sims then the eye tracking of the original is also a huge value add and probably worth it along but personally I don't so unless the crystal wigig module is amazing, I will probably be switching to the crystal light and a vive DAS
Great review as alway Sebastian. Mine is on pre order and should be arriving in the next few weeks. I've got a RTX 3090 in my PC so I'm hoping it's up to the job until I can upgrade my gpu. Even if I have to turn down the settings slightly it will still be better than my HP REVERB G2. Can you please do a comparison video if you have a 3090 lying around? Cheers buddy. Ordered mine eighteen days ago and counting! This "six to eight weeks" is not passing fast enough! And with the overwhelming response this headset is getting, I wouldn't be surprised if I have to wait a bit longer. 😬😬😬😬😬
What is required for Pimax's "Fast See-Through?" Does it need the Lighthouse face plate, or are there pass-through cameras in the basic model. Or is it totally impossible to get mixed/augmented reality with the Crystal Light?
You don't need the mixed reality plate, the default config and the light house plate both will allow you to use the tracking camera to do a gray scale through. Not super clear, but very useful when you just want to pick up a bottle to drink water.
Yes, yes, yes…he’s right…but… Eye Tracking delivered for DCS. One year with the Crystal and 99% I was running at 75% resolution - that’s with a 4090! Only eye tracking allowed me to run DCS on the Crystal at 100% resolution (in the tracked Center) at 72fps locked - Perfection! The Light will deliver more than every headset besides the Full Crystal and maybe the Somnium VR1 - but only at its full potential with a 5090 or better. Best to fully understand the choice. It will be right for many, but not everyone.
Interesting. So I currently run a quest 3 with a 78003xd and 4090. I run it very high in MSFS, with slider full right in occulus, and 3808 resolution supersampled. It's stunning. But I can only achieve this via a 36fps cap. The quest then runs at half refresh and it works a charm. So from what you said, am I going to get less resolution even with the pimax? If your running the pimax at 75% that's like only 2250 res? So in that case, I'll get no graphical benefit with the pimax? Is that correct?
You’ve missed a key issue with the Quest 3, which is the lack of a display port connection for PCVR. Therefore images produced in Q3 PCVR are always subject to compression and therefore compression artefacts - regardless of the stated resolution (although the higher the frame rate and resolution the more prone the Q3 is to compression compromise). The Q3 is very impressive but you will get far more image clarity with a Crystal Light even if you can only push 2160x2160
If you like PCVR on the Q3 you will love it on the Crystal Light, but be aware the full Pimax Crystal can give much higher clarity via Dynamic Foveated Rendering and Eye Tracking in the few titles (such as DCS) that integrate Quad Views (DFR) When GPU’s catch up and can provide enough power to push the Crystal Light at full resolution (2880 x 2880) then arguably the Crystal Light will be a better headset than the full Crystal. - but I’m unsure exactly when we will reach that tipping point

Thanks for the review of the PIMAX Light with dimming. I am more interested in what you think of the PIMAX Light without dimming that goes for 699 dollars. I don't play games that are very dark, and my SIM racing games just mostly do them in Daytime racing. Another issue would be for me is I have a RTX-3080TI and have no plans to upgrade to anything faster. So not sure how much the quality has to be knocked down to run these new headsets. Everyone keeps saying RTX-4090 devices in reviews, but I don't have that luxury. Take Care.
I mostly play onward or vtol VR on PC with a 3060ti with a quest 2. No problems with quest 2 except it's hot and blurry. I'm thinking about Cristal light or quest 3 for an upgrade. What do you think would work better? I'm looking for comfort, visual quality and good tracking when aiming.
With your 3060ti you probably would get a little better edge to edge clarity with a Q3. However, until you upgrade to much better PC (with at least 4070, preferably 4080/4090 gpu) I don't think you'll see all that much overall improvements. I have both Q2/3 and my good old Q2 with my i913900k/rtx4090 still works pretty darn good! I always use a desk or floor fan blowing on me to help keep things cool and fog-free.
I'd do a quest 3 for both standalone and good pcvr compatability for mid to high end P.Cs and great after maket accessories like Kiwi and Bobo. The cons of a crystal light is that you need a beefy computer to even get started on it. There's very little after market parts. Pimax as a whole constantly comes out with a new V.R and is a chaotic company with no goal with lost promises. Cons for the Quest 3 is the lower resolution and if you concentrate you can see the pixel grid. It's a huge upgrade to its quest 2 with fresnel lenses though.
Mine has shipped, and is supposed to arrive on Tuesday. The only thing I didn't know was that the DMAS headphones would work with the Crystal Lite. From this review I see that they do, so I just ordered them. But the Pimax site doesn't make it clear which accessories are supported by which products.

I'm actually pretty impressed. I ordered the better headphones for the Light this weekend, and they already arrived today. There was a delay in Louisville on the headset itself, but that will come tomorrow.
Hi Sebastian, please do a comparison video between this and the PSVR2, especially since the PSVR2 is going to have a PC adapter, the choice is now ultimately between these two (+ maybe Quest 3)
Crystal Light is far from being light enough. I'm having problems with my neck after using G2 (550g + cable weight) for prolonged time. Crystal light is about 200g heavier than G2 if my math is right and much bulkier. That's 2 no goes for me. Crystal light's specs are great and would get it in a heartbeat if only it came in smaller form factor, something like Q3 or P4, possibly with plastic lenses to keep weight under 500 grams. I'm gonna wait and see what Asus, Lenovo, Samsung and maybe someone else brings to the table later this year. I can cope with G2 until then as it's still a decent headset imho.
How did they make such a large headset with such a small FOV. It has the same FOV as the Bigscreen Beyond, one of the smallest headsets ever produced. Even the 5 year old Index still beats it out. Pimax is known for their high FOV headsets, and this one simply isn't that. What is going on over there??
they went with better visuals this go around. I have the Pimax5KSuper and Yes, the FOV is wonderful. but, the visual quality wasn't that great! I heard from Pimax Crystal owners that you won't even miss that FOV with Visuals this good! so Yeah! Better Image Quality is what they went for this time. i am excited to get mine.

Great review. I have a Quest 3 and a RTX 3080 and use virtual desktop to stream SteamVR. Would this be an upgrade over that combination? You also mentioned that one would need a 4080/90 so would my 3080 not be powerful enough to run it? 3080 is very similar to the 4070 in performance. I do plan to upgrade to a 5080 if the price isn't ridiculous.

Some users reported audio lag (up to two seconds!) when using the regular crystal, is this still an issue with the light? This too sounds like a software issue. Man, I want to order this so bad but paying 1000€ for the headset and another 100€ for the DMAS just to be confronted with easy solvable software problems just grinds my gears.

Mmmm.... hotcakes! Might pick this up to replace my reverb G2, but need a full computer upgrade first. We'll see if it's still the go to headset when winter arrives and I've got a Zen5/5080/90 system ready to go.
im in the exact same scenario as you... even my g2 cant be handled too well by my 7-8 year old pc. and i dont wana upgrade my entiiire pc just for some marginal HMD upgrade heh. i think the quest 3 would be a better fit for me for the wireless aspect at least
@@heyjeySigma Same here I have had my G2 for 3 years now and I run it on a 5600XT and I can feel the strain on it because of the huge bottleneck but I don't feel like upgrading my GPU yet so I might sit this one out and use the trusty G2 for another 2 years until Microsoft bricks it. It still holds up today in my opinion.
"Hotcakes" is a marketing term, used as a psychological trigger word. It implies an amazing product that is insanely popular. But it cannot be used here yet, because we know nothing about this new product. Just wanted to let you know this, as in the industry it is used to manipulate low concious buyers. Not saying you are a marketing team, your perhaps just repeated their phrases, but perhaps useful to know its a term used in manipulative marketing strategy.
If you're willing to put up with the weight of the headset and its price, Pimax is making a wireless adapter for the original Crystal. It should be out later this year. They claim full resolution in the area where you're looking running at 90hz with no compression artifacts. Going to have to wait and see if they can deliver.

This review tells me nothing valuable, just useful for someone that already made his mind and was going to get it regardless. I'll have to wait for better reviews and someone to tell me the actual fricking weight instead of the advertised ambiguous information (btw the advertised weight for the Pimax Crystal is misleading according to actual users, so whatever is advertised for the Crystal Light also means nothing)
I pre-ordered with local dimming , without a controller for sim racing only . I also ordered the DMAS earphones and the 15mm gasket. I still have to order the prescription inserts and wait for some updates on that . All suppliers are saying that they have to confirm that the lenses are indeed exactly the same as in the original Crystal . VR Rock is utilizing the screw that is holding the lens in place to mount the inserts . Is that still possible since the lenses are now fixed installed? From the looks of it, they may have the most compact design . I really don’t like my nose to touch the inserts. Any thoughts on correction lens inserts for the Crystal Light ?

@@rajeshkannan_s I only ordered the headset with local dimming. I only fly in dcs so no need for controllers as I have a hotas setup & the Crystal Light has inside out tracking so no need for faceplate.

I’m thinking about doing the same to replace my 5yo Vive Pro1. My main concern is that I’ll miss my VP1’s oled screens, plus the fact that like the Index, it’s native SteamVR. I’ll probably wait for some independent user reviews before ordering one.
@@tomc1380 DLSS is really nice, so is raytracing, but both can go without. Frs and what not is rapidly catching up, and with it being open source it will outlive dlss, certainly. I'd say their proprietary hardware has an edge too but.. eh. A practically top of the line, at the very least a definitely top shelf amd card should be more than "ok".
Typical pimax. Been waiting for my wide fov crystal lenses for nearly a year but nice to see they're shipping a new headset out. I am happy to say the crystal will be the last pimax I buy.
From all the reviews of them it sounds like those wide FOV lenses are probably going to be a disappointment anyway. I think I've only seen one person who's generally positive about them.

So basically over $1,000 U.S. if you buy the lighthouse version (to avoid the terrible quality controllers and, I assume, use Index controllers with base stations) plus the DMAS speakers. As someone who bought and returned the Crystal, I'll pass on this again.

What's people's opinions here on lens barrel distortion compensation? I understand that Steam and at least one VR headset manufacturer believes in running around 1.5x resolution to achieve native res visuals. My Reverb G2 which is roughly 2k by 2k res runs at 3k by 3k in SteamVR, so 6k by 3k total for both eyes. That's doable on my RTX 3090, but this Pixax headset being nearly 3k as standard would need roughly 9k by 4.5k if that compensation is applied - crazy numbers. Or do people believe native visual res is native hardware res? Curious to know others' thoughts.
Würde ich mit dem Wechsel von HpReverb G2 auf die Pimax C. Light mindestens gleich-gute Schärfe im Zentrum haben, aber mit einem Vorteil mit höherer Edge2Edge Clarity sowie etwas größerem FPV (für Simracing gut für Geschwindigkeitsgefühl) und auch noch etwas besseren Schwarzwert wegen LocalDimming? Oder ist die Pimax Hardware hungriger so dass ich die Grafik mehr reduzieren müsste und ich im Zentrum sogar ein weniger scharfes Bild hätte? Zocke hauptsächlich nur AMS2 mit ner RTX 3090 (evtl bald 4090).

I stay with my g2 and will be waiting for super version to replace the g2. And be ready to replace my old 4090 to 5090 as well. Also want to move from win10 to win11. Does g2 srill work on win11?
I have the G2 as well. Have the Ryzen 7 7800x3d cpu, with a asus rtx 4080 oc edition. I have my auto updates metered and blocked. I use windows 11. I only update with the 23H2 update. When the 24H2 update comes out, it will delete ( or remove) WMR ( windows mixed reality). I'll probably preoder the pimax crystal light here in the next few days. I fly mostly in DCS. I'm still getting between 55-60FPS in the G2.
I might have missed it from your review but how is this headset with glasses on? And what about fogging up lenses or glasses when your game is a bit more action oriented like (F1) racing? Thanks for the great review!
With previous YT vids (and also info from Pimax support) I think that you'd need the thicker 15mm facial comfort pad (currently out of stock) for either option. You'll probably only lose a couple degrees of fov. With a desktop or floor fan blowing on you, fogging shouldn't be a problem.
Would you get the same performance from the pimax crystal at full resolution as you would running a Quest 3 at 1.5x resolution (super sampled) with a 4080 ?
Good job pimax I wish they did this headset before the og crystal and I hope the crystal super is a light like this. Basic and faster to produce. The higher end models can come after or upgradable on parts sold separately.
The housing may be bulky but as an 8kx user, it's surprisingly lighter than you'd think. As far as the FOV though, yeah I agree it's a downgrade from previous pimax headsets which is why I probably won't upgrade
A large housing is fine if there is a reason for it. Everything has its trade offs. There is NO reason for it with this headset though. It has no extra internals, the fov is narrow. This only has a ridiculously bulky size because they are cutting corners and reusing the casing. So I get your point, and agree. But not in this particular case.@@adrenalinejunkie3828
@@lacedchemist1295 I used a pimax for a bit honestly among the worst headset I ever used maybe one notch above vice headsets which I consider good for the garbage can. Pimax headsets are uncomfortable and way too wide. Nice fov though.
Right? There really should be an "in-between" model that drops the stand-alone stuff, the auto-IPD motors, etc., but provides ET. With pixel density like this, not giving your users the opportunity to run everything as smoothly as possible is just shooting yourself in the foot.
@@Szabby999 Many of us want eye tracking - but don't want the stand alone VR hardware inside. There's no middle ground - you buy the Pimax Quest, or you get nothing worth having.

What headset do u recomend for the DCS, u said in the video that we should not use it with it because it doesnt have the eye tracking and DFR doesnt help it either. And that we should get the pimax crystal. Can u tell me more about it? Nice video mate. Just a little clarification, IMHO the BigScreen Beyond isn´t a valid alternative mainly because It is not OpenXR compatible so you will be constrained by SteamVR only usage. Cheers.
Ya, I'm going to wait for the Crystal Super versions to be released. By the time it actually comes out I'll probably have upgraded my rtx4090 to a rtx5090, or maybe even a rtx6090, lol!

@@tenniselbow2023 Thanks mate, so it looks like 60/72/90/120Hz for crystal Light, 72/90/120Hz for Crystal Super QLED, and 70/90Hz for Crystal Super OLED. I would still like Pimax to sneak in a 80Hz option on all these because I've found 80Hz with my Q3/QPro/rtx4090 gets me the best/smoothest performance limiting my framerate to 40fps with msfs. Also, with racing sims 80fps is still nice and smooth and gives me a little more headroom. However, because of the more efficient DP connection with Pimax, 90Hz forced to 45fps might be ok.
Before you land 1700, 700, or 7 EUR/$ think three times!!!!! Ok. Enough is enough. Purchased DMAS from Pimax. Left one came faulty. Ticket opened. Video uploaded. After more than month and a half, replacement has not been delivered. Today, they closed the ticket, without resolution! Unit returned to the reseller!!!
I get excellent msfs results with my Q3/rtx4090 using an official link cable connected to my z790 usb3.2 type-c port and 650mbps bitrate (no noticeable artifacts above 450mbps). This provides enough power to maintain my heaset battery above 80% for at least 4-5hrs. The Crystal Light might have slightly better clarity but I doubt it's going to be all that significant. We really need to wait for actual independant user reviews to know for sure imho.
You can get more performance because your computer does not need to compress/decompress the image. Also, image will just be better because no compression artefacts and color banding. Also, better colors thanks to QLED.
@@mixedrealityTV Yes, I def get a performance hit with my Q3/QPro/rtx4090 using an official Link cable compared to my native SteamVR Vive Pro1 with DisplayPort (with Etsy Gear VR lens mod, 2x2.0 base stations, and Index controllers). I've tested these both out and I estimate that the penalty, mainly caused by encoding with my Quest headsets uses up about 10% more PC resources with my rtx4090 than dedicated DP with my VP1. So. with same effective res in msfs my Q3/QPro are happiest at 40fps, while my VP1 is happiest at 45fps. While I get very few stutters with my Q3/QPro, my VP1 with DP does tend to be a little smoother, with less stutter at higher yaw turn rates. Those beautiful AMOLED VP1 screens still look fantastic with dawn to dusk night flying but because of their 1600x1400 res, even with a lot of super sampling, there is still a lot of SDE and cockpit clarity suffers a bit (still readable, but I often need to duck my head in a little). I am looking forward to trying out the Pimax Crystal Super OLED! With Link at 650mbps bitrate I don't see any noticeable compression artifacts like cloud smudges and/or sky banding. With wireless options like Air Link, Virtual Desktop, and SteamLink I do start to notice the odd bit of compression artifacts, but not really all that bad. With the right settings and a good router/wifi setup all these wireless options work surprisingly well imho. Everyones systems, settings, and usage is different so like they say, your results may vary.
@@mixedrealityTV I agree, you lose a bit of perfomance with wifi or usb3 using Quest headsets compared to dedicated ones like the Pimax using DisplayPort. Compared to my DP wired Vive Pro1 I estimate that I lose about 10% overall performance in msfs with my i913900k/rtx4090 PC running it with my Q3/QPro with a Link cable. I sort of make up for this by running my Q3/QPro at 80Hz instead of my VP1's 90Hz. As I already said, I don't get any noticeable compression artifacts using a link cable with 650mbps bitrate. I will say that the VP1 is slightly smoother and it allows me to yaw a bit faster in a heli, with fewer stutters.
I really hope pimax make the super much smaller, as small as they can. It shouldn't have to be much bigger than the G2. They should also just get a backlight with more dimming zones, in the thousands. This would almost be as good as OLED, remove the need for OLED module, and reduce blooming
Hi Sebastian, Today I received my long-awaited Pimax Cristal Light. Which Reached Poland. Unfortunately, they do not meet my expectations! The image is sharp with beautiful colors, but as soon as I move my head, even slightly, the image blurs!!!!. This distorts everything I want from a VR goggles. I have been a fan of Virtual Reality from the beginning. I had an Oculus Rift, then an HP Reverb G2. I currently have Oculus Quest 3 and I have never had such a blurred image when moving my head in any other goggles. I don't know if it's the fault of my copy or maybe it's just the nature of Pimax Cristal Light. Are you able to help?
I own both Quest 3 and the Pimax Crystal Light headset they're both very good in Sweet Spot. You can look around with your eyes without moving your head. The Image on the Crystal Light is the best I have ever seen. Yes, it's better than the Quest 3. FOV is about the same. But, because the Crystal Light is so clear even far away, you feel like you have more because you can see details in the distance. It is much better than I was expecting. Quest 3 still looks really good when you're connected to a PC. There is nothing wrong with owning a Quest 3. But, if you own. Powerful PC and want the best visuals possible without worrying about charging a battery. It is very nice having Pimax Crystal Light as an option.

I can't believe they didn't take the chance to slightly redesign it to make it a bit less ugly and janky looking, not to mention the ridiculous size. Yes I know it's not that important, but it just doesn't look like a product I WANT to buy. Pimax always takes shortcuts and it shows. I guess that's the (low) price you pay though, overall I'm glad they're making high-end PCVR affordable. Not for me though.
