I’m glad! If you pinch where i did, you will only have 2 bottom branches, not 4 like the sketch. You’ll need to leave 2 sets of leaves behind. You can still have many branches up top if you deadhead. Hopefully that makes sense!🌱

I always direct sow in the ground first or mid week of March. Every single one grow, as I'm speaking they are blooming! Zinnia are so easy to grow it literally grows every where in my garden and pots. They required lots of water though. Even drop seeds grow lol. I live in Phx Az zone 9. Zinnia does so well here. It bloom until if we get froze which we did last year. One of my favorite flowers to grow and they so beautiful!

Starting them indoors just guarantees no wildlife will eat them and earlier blooms. But they are so easy to direct sow too. I always recommend Zinnias! Hummingbirds love them too🌱💚

This is great! Like you state elsewhere it is best to leave at least 2 sets of leaves behind. Then there is a possibility o a greater number of branches. By about how much time does this clipping delay blooming? Did you notice? Thanks so much!
@crochetgardenrepeat
@crochetgardenrepeat 10 месяцев назад
Thank you! It delays about 2-3 weeks. It varies depending on your weather, the amount of sun and water they receive. So if you want flowers asap, don’t pinch them at all.

I’m still sort of a gardening newbie, can we do this with Marigolds too? I got really into planting marigolds from seed this past summer and was planning to start them up in the spring. Are there any flowers that you know of that don’t like having this done or can this be something that you can do across the board?
@crochetgardenrepeat
@crochetgardenrepeat 10 месяцев назад
Welcome to gardening! I’m still learning too, I am by no means an expert lol. I would recommend not taking it down to the first set of leaves (like the video). Leave at least 2 sets behind. Yes you can do this with marigolds! Not everything can be pinched. Most sunflowers can’t, as well as delphiniums, ranunculus, statice, foxglove and many more. You can google search all varieties just to be sure first. But A LOT can be pinched! Have fun!🌱💚

I have a question. I followed your advice and pinched my zinnia seedlings back. Half are producing two new little branches/stems, but the other half are only producing one. Is that normal? 😮
@crochetgardenrepeat
@crochetgardenrepeat 2 месяца назад
A few of mine have done that before. I do not know what causes that. Even if you leave a few sets of leaves behind, it still does that here and there. My coleus has done that too after pinching. I wish I knew the answer🌱💚
@michaeldj5
@michaeldj5 2 месяца назад
I guess once the ones that only produced one new stem have gotten two more sets of leaves, I'll pinch again. Lol. I just want to be sure to pinch before there are any flowers formed.

Guess what? After I pinched, one of my zinnias is producing two branches down next to each cotyledon. I guess that's good?

Is deadheading just removing the bloom? Also-is pinching or leaving as is better when trying to plant zinnias from seed in containers?
@crochetgardenrepeat
@crochetgardenrepeat 3 месяца назад
Yes, that is deadheading. Pinching depends on the look you want in the end. If you want super tall zinnias (like as a backdrop), then don’t pinch them. They may not be sturdy stems though. If you want more flowers and a bushier/fuller look, then pinch them. I would say to pinch them for containers. I hope that helps!🌱💚

If you use rooting hormone, it should be within a few days. It’ll take a few days longer than that if you don’t use anything. Covering them with an upside down ziploc or bag will help keep the soil moist (just like germinating seeds)🌱💚

@crochetgardenrepeat
@crochetgardenrepeat 4 месяца назад
Any “Seed Starting Soil” works. I use either Miracle Grow or Jiffy brand. If they are leggy and stretching, that is a lighting issue. It means they aren’t getting enough light. Grow lights should be on for 14-16 hours and hanging 3-4 inches above the seedlings. If you are using a window, you need to find a sunnier window🌱💚
