Remarkable achievement. I certainly admire your determination and perseverance in breathing new life into abused and neglected old floorboards.

I am dealing with a floor that looks just like this...the old pine boards and the mess all over it. I've already removed as much tar as I could with contractor's solvent and am now starting the sanding. It's good to kind of see what I am going to end up with. This is the best video I've seen that deals with my particular issues. Thank you!

You should really think about safety here. The black stuff is probably adhesive for an old linoleum floor and probably contains asbestos. Any old paint contains lead, and old varnishes often do (often 5% by weight). The bags on your sanders don't filter fine particles -- they are probably 30 to 100 micron filters. You can't see the fine dust you are breathing in. Wear respirators at a minimum, use HEPA vacs, and use good HEPA dust collection on your sanders...the floor refinishing business is way behind on these issues. HEPA negative air machines blowing out the windows should be standard practice. What I have done when the floor is painted (probably similar here) is first use a chemical stripper (Smart Strip or Peel Away in a 5 gal bucket) to safely remove the adhesive or paint first by scraping wet, wash, let dry, then start sanding. First sanding should be wet if possible to remove any coating that contains lead. Easy enough to test for lead using inexpensive kits from Amazon.

I have wide pine plank floors (170 yrs old) with just a clear coat, and not much left on it to say the least! I am wondering what to use to fill some of the deeper scratches after sanding? I think the person before me had a dog. Can i just use any wood filler? Thanks

Yes any wood filler will work. Duraseal or Sanlyn filler is made for floors. Or you can use the dust from your floor sander and combine it with polyurethane to make filler. Good luck! Thanks for watching!

What do you use to clean out gaps. Having a dilemma on what to do with gaps in my heartwood pine floors. Was gonna use wood strips in spots I can and then just filler for nail holes. With the gaps effect the finish on the flooring and Make it not “flat” thanks in advance!
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
Use a flat scraper to remove loose filler. Using wood pieces glued to fill the gaps is always the best. All latex, or oil based floor fillers will eventually break loose and come out, although oil based filler tends to remain intact longer.

@@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101 thanks for the response! floor is 110 year old tongue and groove heartwood pine.
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
@@colesoul9907 Check google images to confirm wood type, or remove a small piece and ask a supplier close to you. You can also research century homes built in your area to see which woods were used at that time. Based on the hundreds of century homes I refinished where I live, they used similar wood in their construction. Upstairs were usually red pine, or BC fir and the main floor was usually red pine, oak, less often maple, or birch.

Hey I just sanded my pine dining room floors Im not going to stain I like the natural look what do i use to water proof them?
@HardwoodFloorRefinishing101
You can use water based, or oil based floor finish. The water based finish will not alter the appearance of sanded floor. The oil based finish will amber over time. Good luck with your project!
