Part I - It delights me to be able to show you my basket weaving art. I use the basketweave for not just baskets, but I also use it in my regalia or traditional dress.
www.NativeAdvancement.com
The basketweaves that I make are made from the Longleaf pine tree. We are allowing you into our secret hidden world. Each video gives you little hints of how we live. We are members of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape. Customs and celebrations have been passed down through many generations. We will remember, each generation that passes leaves markers and teachings through the birth of the new generations.
My name is Tyrese "Bright Flower" Gould Jacinto, of Bridgeton, New Jersey. I am a member of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indian Tribe. My parents are the late Phyllis "Red Deer" and the current Chief, Mark "Quiet Hawk" Gould. My parents were among a core group that initiated the modern-day structure of our ancient tribe.
This, therefore, allowed me to be immersed in tribal life as a child. What is dear to me is my ancient Lenape arts. Mastering shell art, gourd art, and basket weaving have been a tradition close to my heart. I have five children and two grandchildren and eager to pass on my Lenape traditions to them. If we do not persevere and teach, these arts will not continue or be passed down.
It is my pleasure to be able to pave roads for future generations. It delights me to be able to show you my basket weaving art. I use the basketweave for not just baskets, but I also use it in my regalia or traditional dress. The basketweaves that I make are made from the Longleaf pine tree.
A full-grown tree has between 8 and 18-inch long needles that turn golden in color. Longleaf pine forests once encompassed more than 90 million acres of the North American landscape. Today, only three percent, or 3.4 million acres, remain and, yet, Longleaf pine forests represent some of the world's most biologically diverse ecosystems. The Longleaf pine ecosystem provides a critical habitat for 29 threatened and endangered species. Those threatened and endangered species include the gopher tortoise and indigo snake. Longleaf pine preservation is crucial, not just for the ecosystem, however, to maintain our ancient Lenni-Lenape culture.
Our tribe, the Nanticoke Lenni Lenape here in Bridgeton, New Jersey, has made a conscientious effort to protect the Longleaf pine and its habitat on our tribal property. Tribal members have access to the needles for ancient art form creation.
I am going to introduce a collection of basket weaving art that I have created.
Thank you, and I am excited to share it with you.
We have remained in our homeland and have been here for over 10,000 years, right here in New Jersey.
We have discovered how to survive, to be "our people" and/or authorities on South Jersey Indigenous. The promises we made to our elders many years ago are being honored with each generation.
Please Subscribe for more about our hidden in plain sight culture. We truly hope that you enjoy all the posts. Vic and Ty

Mrs. Jacinto, I think you are exactly who I'm looking for to help me on my craft journey. My dear friend Talis Yona always told me to watch for the smoke signals to lead me to my learning and medicine----as per usual he was right. Thanks for doing what you do. I will continue to watch your videos- Peace, Susan Pinto

I'm so glad to meet you! My grandmother made pine needle baskets. Here in Middle Georgia, we have an abundance of pine trees. I'm excited to be able to make pine needle baskets, too. Thank you!!

Oh Tyrese! Your work is beautiful! I too am a Gould but have only a small portion of native blood, and a very large portion of the love of weaving pine needle baskets. I’m on the west coast, so I must order my needles from your neck of the woods to fuel my attempts at artful basketry. Thank you for sharing your story!

I know where I can get fine leather offcuts. I am thinking how they could be used for decorating the finished item. Wooden beads and feathers too... Oh, not to mention porcupine quills...
