Not sure why this is called a Pineapple twist, just has been as long as I can remember!
Made from 5/8" square but can be any size.
This is my first video with the new HD camcorder, definitely see the difference.... #GaryHuston #Blacksmithing #Farrier #ASMR #Horseshoeing #Fabrication #Ironwork #Hoofcare #welder #repairs #horse #farriery #engineering

What fuel are you using? What is the regulator for?

@garyhuston With the cubed twist, you just cut a center line much like what is done with the pineapple twist but instead of twisting it, just take your chisel and cut a groove every 1/4" on two opposite corners. After you get done cutting all of the slits then you can go ahead and twist it however many times you want to. I usually only do a half twist or full
@Knobby_

thanks for the great vidi! i was just wondering, you dont slice all the way through like a basket? just an indentation befor the first twist? or am i miss understanding. sorry. just not sure, very happy i stumbled across your channel! extremely useful stuff. knowledge is key thanks

@SoftwareCommercials i also heard it called a spiral/step twist because they look like steps when twisted accurately and properly.but yes a bunch of litte "cubes" staggered

Beautiful. Is the chisel hand-forged or store-bought? Largest one I can find is a brick setters chisel, and the steel isn't very good on it.

It's called a pineapple twist because it looks like a pineapple. Good job, though. I always loved this twist, even more than the basket twist.

@garyhuston The best explanation I can find is this youtube video Forging a Fireplace Tool Handle.mpg so if you search that you can see.

@garyhuston its where you cut notches on the corners of the stock and twist it,then it seperates and its called a cube twist

That ahs falling down from iron while you were forgeing is that carbon? Or maybe pollution from metal?
@gilotine76

Very nice. I agree that with the end done as ball (or other shape) would make a very good looking handle.

Hi just wondering would it be better to use a soft face hammer like lead or brass when using a chisel like this?
@garyhuston
@garyhuston 9 лет назад
Onur Caglar No, you would end up ruining the hammer.

Its a better idea to use a sacrificial steel hammer when using chisels or punches. I use an oil drilling hammer.

At such high temps the surface of the iron oxidizes extremely quickly and flakes off as the metal is being worked. As Gary said, it is called scale. Btw, Gary, thank you very much for this video! I tinkered a little with blacksmithing several years ago and just got back into the smithy today for the first time in around 5 years or so. I will be attempting this for the handle of my next rail road spike knife.
