In this bite-sized episode, Jonny Smith looks at one of the stars of The Geneva Motor Show 2019, the Pininfarina Battista 1900hp electric hypercar - possibly the most powerful Italian car ever?
Normally a design house, the Battista signals their first foray into making their own supercars, and of course, they are electric.
Each car will sell for approx €2 million (roughly equivalent to £1.7 million or US$ 2.24 million).
Rapid charge at 350kw to 80% in 40 mins.
390mm front and 380mm rear diameter brakes.
Official test driver for the project is ex F1 Nick Heidfeld. Dr Peter Tutzer is the (ex Bugatti, Porsche and Pagani) chassis guru.
Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina founded the styling house in 1928 and met Enzo Ferrari in 1951 to close a deal for Pininfarina to exclusively style Ferrari road cars.
In 2015 Pininfarina was bought for £125 million by Indian industrial giant Mahindra.
We really love our Patreons and we couldn't keep making Fully Charged without their help. If you'd like to help us keep making more episodes, please take a look at:

Just a beautiful design. And pininfarina partnering up with Rimac is absolutely brilliant. The ICE in super/HyperCars is on its last legs. Also, imagine a hyper car without the stratospheric maintenance costs!

Well said👌🌏 and just showing how fun zero emission transport can be love the engineering. We drive a i3 all electric it has a carbon tube' I often think mmmm if BMW put a extra motor in the back there is loads of space and 1 up front it would make the old tin toxic ice look so yesterday! Thank you Buzz☮

It depends how far this ev Supercars can actually go. Will they be able to go 1 hours at their max in speed and acelleration/deceleration without huge problems? It seems to me today hybrid propulsion is still the apex in cars. Full electric need a lot of experience...

Yeah, the shiny hypercars is all very nice, but we want long-range vans. Really boring long-range vans with 180kWh batteries. Slightly worrying there are 75 people with far too much money so they'll drop 2 million on this. 150millions euros could get you a lot of bike lanes, bus subsidy, wind turbines, housing retrofit. i.e stuff that might actually save us all, as opposed to pointless wank hypercars which definitely won't. Those people with the conspicuous consumption are the same ones that take 50 flights a year, live in stupidly big and inefficient houses and buy way too much crap, all resulting epic climate change. We have to make them stop somehow.

Unfortunately you just cant make a practical HGV battery powered yet. If Lithium-air batteries get sorted them maybe they would work but Lithium-ion etc are too heavy for a given amount of capacity. Basically we are already at 90% of the theoretical limit. Diesel has an energy density of 40MJ per litre. The engines are 50% efficient (peak) and the drive train is about 80% efficient so 40% actually get's to the wheels (about 16MJ from each litre) That will get you approximately 2.5 miles. So on average you need 6.4MJ per mile on average (this is assuming about 10 miles per UK gallon). A single LIon cell weights 45G and will have a capacity of 2.5AH for high discharge types. That's basically 3.7V*2.5Ax3600s=33.3kJ so you would need 193 of them to get 1 mile or 19,300 for a 100 mile journey. They weigh 45g each so that's 868kg of them just to do 100 miles. On a longer run, say 500 miles you would need 4.3 tonnes just of batteries. Plus of course all the heavy duty wiring and battery holders and other mechanical gubbins. All up 6 tonnes is my best guess as a design engineer and this is assuming a 100% efficient drive train. In reality it would be 85%+ efficient so nearer 7 tonnes). For the same journey using diesel you would need about 220kg of diesel. OK the engine and gearbox would weigh more than the motors in the electric system, but not by more than about 0.5 tonnes. So as well as being more expensive it would have at best 85% of the cargo capacity and way longer turn round rimes IE a 300kWH battery takes 40 mins for 80% this would take three times that. IE two hours to add 400 miles of range. Just not practical for HGVs at the moment.

I remember when the Mclaren F1 road car came out and all the journalist went mad. Some said that car would never be “beaten.” I would never imagine to see this type of car to come out in my lifetime with the specs it has. People of my era prefer big petroleum engines and laugh at the idea of electric cars. When the Tesla P100D with Ludacris came out, my world was flipped upside down. It’s an exciting time in the automotive world, and for “petrol heads.” A new term must be created for fans of electric cars: Capacitor heads? Kilowatt heads? Charge heads?

The secret end game is this: Ferrari wanted an electric car, however, they cannot tarnish their name and they still cling to the old times status like cougars to a slippery wall. So what the hell to do? Simple, make Pininfarina design and build a cars under the Pininfarina flagship. If all goes well, super, we then make Ferrari next year even better. If all goes bad, well, fuck it, Pininfarina can go and take it. Here Ferrari demonstrates two things: 1. Does not have the balls to look into the future and move with the technology any longer because they want to not display failure 2. They don't give a single fuck about environment and still producing piece of crap noisy polutant cars.

CARPERVERT you got one? Anyone you know got one? LoL.. it exists alright.. currently in dreams. When you get one.. you let me know. No one even F’n knows what the car is gonna look like yet. You GOT to be F’n kidding me. We already know what the model Y will look like over a year away. The Porsche is a f’n joke. Just like the Etron from their sister Audi... pathetic. Yeah the Taycan will be a better effort than the etron.. but still a joke. The Porsche junkies will buy it.. great. Better than buying another ICE... but the Taycan will hold 0 place in history as any leap forward. And it will barely sell as many as Model S around the world. Just watch. Now if they had actually built the Mission E that they showed... well.. I might actually cut them some slack on some things.. but considering, what we've seen doesn't look much like the Mission E.. it's not even close to as good looking. Well, anyone who wants a Taycan can have it. I'm not trading my wheels for that thing. I'm not driving on a track.. and it doesn't have half the tech I've come to expect. The charge speed will be nice.. if it doesn't fry the battery in a few years.. and if you can find a charger to actually hit the speeds they claim.

I wonder how it sounds, must be great! EVs make the best sound, it's pure speed and no energy wasted as noise.

Definitely gonna pre order one of these... if I could save up for a thousand years hahaa. And Dear Fully Charged, I REALLY hope you have this car as one of your test ride cars at this year's live event in Silverstone, please have it. I'd queue for an hour to have a ride in this especially to feel that 0-60 time. Have a good few of professional drivers to do it, the RIMAC could be there too. This car would probably drive vertical up the side of a building if you could position it properly, that'll probably be in the next Fast and the Furious film =P Cool car, just like the RIMAC.

It's beautiful but this sort of more traditional car show - about something I could never buy - really makes me feel like I'm a million miles away and in another universe. In a certain sense it feels like it's demonstrating the hopelessness of technology - that it exists but we cannot have it. Sorry for being down.
@mgammeren

Don't be. Everything we have now in our own cars started in the most expensive cars. Camera on the back? Now you can have it on a Dacia. And so many other things. If the tech is made for those hyper cars it will be tested, getting cheaper and used for mass production after a while.
@AmosIrontree

It's a beautiful car, but the only thing it doesn't seem to share with the Tesla roadster is the price. Why can Tesla create a car for a tenth of the price with very similar specs? What is the profit margin on this thing? Why are people so willing to part with millions of dollars just to own something exclusive? 🤷‍♂️

not to mention: Tesla is already giving away over 80 Roadsters for free to people who have gotten enough credits to the referral program, while Pininfarina is only gonna make 150 in total. Think about that!

So riddle me this: How does Tesla,a start-up in car terms, build something faster and with double the range of this, and only charges 250k for it. How? Is Tesla really that far ahead?
@spooks196

Yes, they are taking over global battery production. Driving price down.

I understand that Tesla is way ahead technically, but it seems they are even beating them on engineering costs, build costs and other ancillary costs. Its bizzare.. the cost/price ratio is crazy and these older houses still do not understand what is hitting them,all seemingly, in slow-motion.

@@ade-ade they appear to be waiting for others to take all the risks in adopting a new tech. Not all businesses believe in being at the forefront seeing as R&D is expensive and the market isn't proven yet. I believe all who wait will be eliminated however, I look forward to the upheaval. Like you said, in slow motion..

Two reasons: 1) Pininfarina are only making 150 of these. They can't spread the development costs out over many thousands of cars like Tesla can. 2) Pininfarina want to make money, so they are charging as much as they can. Tesla want to build market share so they are charging as little as they can.

WOW 120kWh and your only getting 300 miles?!?! The efficiency of the motor is just slightly worse than the jaguar I pace (the current worst) ill tell you how you can reduce weight. Improve your motor by 50% and you can take out a quarter of the battery weight. Tesla uses a 75kWh battery in the model 3 long range and they get 325 miles.

Another expensive toy for the rich and famous... When will whoever release a really affordable compact class BEV? And no, the Renault Zoe isn't affordable. Affordable means below 15,000 € in base trim without such bullshit like: you have to rent the battery in addition.

Suddenly the US$250k Tesla roadster has come into sharp focus. Not only are its numbers more impressive but at 1/8 the price, remarkably it could possibly be the best bang (hum, whir) for your buck in the performance EV world.

I love all ev's. I love fully charged. I'd love if this vehicle actually gets built! BUT not starting production for nearly two years? WTF? We've all seen so many car promises turn to verbal fertilizer, I'm sorry, this car will never be built. So many things are going to change before the end of 2020 and then take three years to build 150 of them,, the tech that this car is based on will be outdated in five years. Sorry, that's the truth!

Made with hyper, hyper, hyper expensive meteorite steel? Love this so much...Yet... Some people wonder why the new videos of some all electric cars {ahhh-porsche... gesundheit} only show the car in super slow motion. This may be because if they showed them at actual speed some people would measure the distance and time and see how very very very much faster electric cars are than piston engines are or could ever be. MY design is faster, yet in the USA - big car makers have stopped making cars, trucks only, setting China up to dump "1 billion electrics at half the price of a Tesla" on US.

For the same money you could get 8 founders addition Roadsters or 10 "standard" Roadsters. With that you get double the range, similar/better performance, Autopilot and arguably a better looking car.

What a comeback and what a slap in the face for Ferrari, Pininfarina coming out with the daddy of Electric Cars and Hypercars!! after being dumped by Ferrari who now design all their cars in house... I really hope this is the start of a new chapter for Pininfarina, not just as a design house, but an all out stand alone car maker.

I'm pretty sure that many of the people seeing this don't have money to buy a Prius, much less a 2million supercar, this is the problem with this cars, they are pretty to look at but out of reach of 99.9% of the human race. At least Tesla offerings are within a larger range of wallets.

Imagine being enough of a low-life to publicly scrutinize people you have never met, generalize them all in the same self-made stereotype and insult them for no apparent reason whatsoever. You can say whatever the fuck you want about the Tesla crowd since that is a cult of its own, but the amount of ego that you need to possess to say sh like ''thinking of the stinking poor'' and ''smelly crowd''. Would neck myself if I was such a pitiful miserable dickwad, but I guess some people just stroke their ''superiority'' and feel no shame in doing that.
