I play in a Pink Floyd tribute band and so their music is very deep for me. But for the actual members, their lives were complicated, and they simply were not machines of output solely for the sake of music. The band was a business proposition. They dealt with issues of hard work, collaboration, contrasting ideas, feelings and interests. And there you have it. There is no "what it would have been if". Everything happened the way it happened. So...practice compassion and not judgment of people and enjoy the music. Pink Floyd is a masterpiece of pain, soul, work, time, art and magic. Respect to all.

I was there in 2005 and it was the best 24 minutes of my life. No doubt about it, the vocal duet of 'Wish You Were Here' and the absolutely sublime 'Comfortably Numb' cannot be beaten by anyone or anything until the day I die. It cost me eleven pounds to see that gig - the best bargain I have had in rock music. The break in the feud lasted from 2005 until 2011. How I wish for those days back. x

Waters has gotten more and more polarising as time (and money) has gone on - from his politics and his personal relationships to his pettiness and outright jealousy of Gilmour and Wright's musical contributions to Floyd. He gambled, and lost in his total takeover, and I don't fault Gilmour for saying enough was enough and standing up to him ever since.

According to David, he was not for Rick's ouster "I didn't support Roger in it. Although when Rick asked me about it I said he hadn't been pulling his weight but I also said he had been in the band since its inception, was a founding member and his position was sacrosanct (important) and if he wasn't going to quit I would support him". To back up the statement David said this to Mojo a few months before the release of Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81 in 2000 back in December, 1999 "(Sigh) I did not go along with it. I went out to dinner with Rick after Roger had said this to him and said if he wanted to stay in the band I would support him in that. I did point out to Rick that he hadn’t contributed anything of any value whatsoever to the album and that I was not over-happy with him myself - he did very very little; an awful lot of the keyboard parts are done by me, Roger, Bob Ezrin, Michael Kamen, Fred Mandel - but his position in the band to me was sacrosanct. My view, then and now is, if people didn’t like the way it was going it was their option to leave. I didn’t consider that it was their option to throw people out". James Guthrie who was engineer and co-producer said about Rick's contributions "Rick did some great playing on that album, whether or not people remember it - some fantastic Hammond parts" and also said Rick played 85% of the keyboards on the album. Only songs without Rick were "Mother", "In the Flesh (without question mark)", "Stop" and "Outside the Wall" but plays piano, synthesizers and organs on the rest of the album. Rick said "I was on The Wall but again wasn't a band" and said "On Animals, we lost the band feeling and I didn't like Animals anyway". According to Rick in Mojo Magazine in December, 1999 "I wanted to work, but Roger was making it very difficult for that to happen. I think he was already thinking of trying to get rid of me". Then said this "It would have been quite easy to say, “Oh he left because he had a cocaine problem or a drink problem.” I can honestly say that it really was not a drug problem. It was taken without a doubt by him, me, Dave, Nick, Bob Ezrin, but purely socially, it wasn’t lying around in the studio". Roger on the other hand said this "There were people who were doing a lot - some of us had big, big problems. I certainly wasn’t doing drugs at that point". As far as story of Wright's departure in his own words "When I think about, right from the beginning Roger and I were never the best of friends, but we weren’t enemies either until he went into his ego trip. Once he decided he wanted to control everything, his first step was, “I’ll get rid of Rick, I’ve never liked him anyway.” It was part of his big game plan to become the leader, the writer, the producer and have people play for him. I think the next step of his plan, though they were buddies, was to get rid of Nick, that’s what I’ve heard, and then Dave become the guitarist and use session musicians. You may think that’s all rubbish, but I suspect that’s how he was thinking. I think he would tell you that I’d lost interest in the band -there are times around Animals where I would sit down with our manager and say, “I’ve got to leave this band, I can’t stand the way Roger’s being,” but I wasn’t really serious about leaving, though sometimes I wasn’t happy. At the time I was going through a divorce, I wasn’t that keen on The Wall anyway, and I didn’t have any material. He might have seen my situation as not having contributed everything but he wouldn’t allow me to contribute anything. We had a break after we finished recording in France and I went to Greece to see my family. I get a call from Steve saying, “Come to LA immediately, Roger wants you to start recording keyboard tracks.” I said, “I haven’t seen my young kids for months and months, I’ll come on the agreed date. ” He said, “Fair enough, I understand.” Come the agreed day, Steve met me and said, “Roger wants you out of the band.” So much for Roger's F Off claims. Then Rick concludes " I fought my corner. Dave and Nick would say, “This is not right, we think it’s unfair”. When we had the meeting Roger said, “Look, either you leave or I’m not going to let you record my material for The Wall”. It was maybe a game of bluff but that’s what he said to me. Remember we were in a terrible financial situation and he said to me, “You can get your full royalties for the album but you can basically leave now and we’ll get a keyboard player to finish it.” And I spent many days and sleepless nights thinking about his whole thing. I could have called his bluff and said, “OK, go and do a solo album,” and I think Roger would have then said, “OK, I’m scrapping all this material” - it was his, so he had the right to do that. I thought about it and thought about it and I decided I can’t work with this guy any more whatever happens, I was terrified of the financial situation and I felt the whole band was falling apart anyway. I didn’t know, and I think I’ll never know ’til the day I die, what would have happened if I’d said, “No, I’m not going to go.” So, I made the decision, rightly or wrongly, to leave. But I also made the decision I’m going to finish recording this album and I want to be in the live shows and then we’ll say goodbye. The interesting thing about all that is why, if Roger thought I couldn’t perform, why he then said, “OK, that’s fine, you can finish recording and do the live shows.” It’s very weird and bizarre, and it was a time in my personal life - I would say I was confused." David and Nick brought Rick back on salary towards the end of Momentary Lapse sessions for overdubs and then Rick was fully reinstated in January 1993 for The Division Bell sessions and was in partnership with David and Nick again and Rick played keyboards on the whole album except for piano on A Great Day and High Hopes which was the ingrate backstabber Jon Carin and programming was Jon but the rest of the synthesizers and organ and piano (especially on Cluster One and Marooned) was Rick.

I love Pink Floyd. My first experience with them was when the movie "The Wall" came out. I was in 8th grade and loved it instantly. Didn't care about who did this or that, who contributed more or whatever. I loved Pink Floyd and still do. The 5 of them made, in my opinion, a Magical Band. Roger's ability to come up with such fantastic lyrics still, to this day, blows my mind. Hands down the best lyricist in the business, ever. I loved The Wall and the way the songs melded into one another and told such a great story. The music, played by Nick, David and Rick was exceptional, and out of this world. Wish I could have seen them live. As for the break-up and the reasons behind it, I wasn't there but I do know that in every argument I have had in my lifetime, we each came away from it with a different point of view on who started it, what caused it, who did more (or less) work or caring. It's human nature. Now, Rick is gone and the rest should forget the past. Move on and put it behind you. You were good friends once and changed the world, and my life, with your beautiful music. You only live once. Bury that old, rusty hatchet and come together as friends, once more for us all. For me. I love you guys.

True- and those albums are both really good. The picture of Syd in Abbey Road during WYWH is pretty haunting. Forgot to mention his LSD use and the results- but that's a well-known tale. It was interesting to read that- except for Syd- the band was surprisingly untrippy and straight in the late 60s- remarkable for a group who, at the time, were right in thick of the psychedelic scene.

A complexity that wasn't really addressed was that Gilmour and Waters seemed to be getting along for a few years (Waters appeared at Gilmour's charity function; Gilmour appeared at Water's London Wall show). They had a second falling out that seemed to be around Pink Floyd's advertising machine highlighting Gilmour solo work (as well as Gilmour's wife's work) while refusing to acknowledge Water's tours centered around Pink Flyoyd albums.

I think Waters gets a lot of flack, especially from the US, due to his overt political beliefs. Bands have ups and downs, writing credits is hardly a unique issue for Floyd either. As fans, we love the music and shouldn't get so caught up in the in-fighting which is interesting as a "fly on the wall" type thing, but shouldn't be taken so seriously. Do people dislike Dark Side because Roger brought the ideas? Of course not.

For me, the dynamics of Roger and David's relationship are not unlike my parent's relationship while growing up. While one's right, one is also wrong, and when one's wrong, one is also right. So you can't win, and it's pointless to take a side because you love them both for they have given you.

PF has always been a collaboration, when it comes to their greatest albums. the zenth is from dark side until Animals. these 3 were the zenith and it gave them the holy grail of rock music. The Wall was a great addition, but somehow a disapointment back then, I remember it clearly. It is too much Waters, nevertheless, it wouldn't be as great as it is without Dave and Nick. But you are right, even in the zenith, Pink Floyd is a lot of David. I mean really *a lot* He plays a huge role. nevertheless, Dave couldn't do the magic trick without Roger Nick and Rick. They are like the door opener for Dave's arena. That is Pink Floyd. Dave is THE MAN in the Band, (he also contributed a lot more than only his vocals, guitar and songwriting. he also is responsible for most of the freaking stuff. many people doen't even know that). but without the rest, there is no magic trick.

Waters was tied to Syd much tighter than he ever would be with the other members. It"s easy to believe that Waters sort of considered Gilmour an interloper from the very instant that he replaced the out of whack Syd. If this was the case, any suggestions or changes David tried to introduce would have had an instant abrasive effect on Roger. It seems the other Floyd members considered Waters to be a middling musician, but an excellent lyricist and arranger. If everyone had stayed in their lanes, the big feud probably wouldn't have started. After the monumental success of Darkside, Waters narcissist egomania burst out on the other members like a pox, implosion was only a matter of time. I was very glad to see Momentary Lapse top the charts, proving Pink Floyd was still very viable as a collective, without Waters. Roger has become the embodiment of "If you don't eat your meat, how can you have any pudding".
@billyz5088
@billyz5088 11 месяцев назад
~~ it's true that Waters' musicianship was fairly mediocre - and really the bass parts for practically the entire catalog are not very challenging - so Waters did not need to be a John Entwistle - and he was never in any danger of becoming one. That said his skills as a songwriter - arranger - and especially as a lyricist - are quite simply top tier in all of Rock & Roll - and while his vocal capabilities are sometimes a bit shaky - he often worked very hard - practicing - rehearsing etc. to nail vocal parts on record - for many years he seemed to regret not having gotten it right on "Have a Cigar" from WYWH - where Roy Harper was used on the record because neither Gilmour or Waters could provide a satisfactory result at the time. As for Syd's departure - pretty sure Waters was as aware as any of them that Syd was finished in the group - and that they had to replace him ASAP if the band was going to survive - so maybe it was just a personality conflict between Gilmour & Waters right from the start.

In most great bands , egos have always played major part in the disintegration of relationships. Waters clearly has an inflated view of his own abilities and although I accept he was the major creative force within the band after Sid Barrett left, much of Floyd’s sound came from Gilmores guitar playing and Wrights sound scapes on the piano and keyboard. There is no doubt Waters made a tactical error in judgment in the 80’s when he thought Floyd wouldn’t be successful without him , the rest of the band should probably have booted him and his overly inflated ego out after the Wall .

I will just say it. We would not be viewing this had Sid Barrett NOT left Pink Floyd. The Floyd would have done well enough during the time that psychedelic music was popular. But we and those younger than than those that found Pink Floyd in our youth would never have heard their music unless listening to some Oldies show that would find "lost" bands or songs to play. Nor would we know Pink Floyd without Gilmour or Waters had either left before Meddle. While at odds, and opposite in many ways, both Gilmour and Waters expected excellence in their productions. Water's lyrics would never have had the impact they did....were it not for the Gilmour Guitar and vocals. Waters is a pitiful singer. Gilmour isn't a perfect singer, but he did carry the band with what he had. Gilmour's guitar is still the best I have ever heard and I hope that will be said 100 years from now. What made Floyd magic was the input from Waters and Gilmour, their clashes included. Mason and Wright were the dampening factors to reel in some of the discontent. And damn good at that as they probably knew where things were heading without their influence.

It's a bit unfair to focus on the callousness of the decision to 'not pick up' Syd without covering why. Syd was completely dysfunctional on stage by then and even worse on televised performances. He was contributing nothing; he wasn't writing anything, he couldn't play his guitar, he missed all his cues, didn't have any of the discipline you need to play in a band on stage. He was burned out and brain damaged from too much acid and who knows, maybe there were other underlying problems too. The decision to simply 'not pick him up' one day was a very easy decision to make considering the band already felt like he was absent. Even when he was there, he wasn't. The band originally bought in Gilmour to 'cover' Syd on stage, and when it became more and more apparent that he was no longer capable of playing live, they considered keeping him on in a kind of 'Brian Wilson' role; as a songwriter and producer, but not as a performer. But then Waters started to write and assert himself and the rest is nicely covered in this clip. Remember Ummagumma's studio album, where all four members went away and came up with solo contributions? That was Roger's idea. I've always believed that even then he was testing the rest of the band's songwriting abilities and plotting to take over. David Gilmour at the time said he felt a certain amount of desperation at having to come up with something on his own. It looks to me like Waters found their limitations and exploited them in his evil plot to take over the band.
@jmdavison62
@jmdavison62 10 месяцев назад
Well put. It's unfortunate that Wright's contribution to _Ummagumma_ wasn't stronger. "It Would Be So Nice" and "Sisyphus" provided Waters with the reasons he needed to dismiss Wright's contributions from that point onward. "Paintbox" and "Remember a Day" are two of Pink Floyd's strongest songs.

And face it, Wright didn't really contribute Many (ANY ?) songs of his own To The Wall or Final Cut (that wasn't his fault since Roger was totally controlling that album recording),. But I don;t think he dismissed Wright on DSOM or WYWH. Plus Wright was the LEAST "Alpha" in the band. You can;t run a band with a "Beta" in charge. Too many ways the business can destroy and control you. Roger was better built for that.

@@Piggy-Oink-Oink No, but the signs were there at least as far back as 1968 ("It Would Be So Nice") that Waters and perhaps Mason weren't above subtle bullying of Richard Wright. Somewhere there's an interview with Richard Wright in which he said that if Syd Barrett had left Pink Floyd under different circumstances -- specifically, leaving for career heights unattainable with Pink Floyd -- and if Barrett had wanted to bring Wright with him, Wright "would have been off like a shot." We'll never know if that was just 20/20 hindsight, but it comports with the idea that Wright's position in Pink Floyd grew increasingly delicate after his main ally was no longer around, let alone functioning.

Managing success and fame was, is and always will be a difficult problem for all kinds of bands when the egos of one or more of its members flare up. Beyond the lyrics (there are very good, good and regular ones) what made Pink Floyd great was the music, and in that matter the guitar (especially the great solos) of Gilmour and the climates that Wright created with the keyboards were fundamental; at the level of instrumental skills, Waters and Mason accompanied correctly. After Barrett's departure, Waters may have written most of the lyrics, but the compositions and musical arrangements in the kind of music that Pink Floyd did, it must have been done by the band as a whole, rehearsing until they found the right point. This is how the creative process used to be in almost all progressive rock bands, they started from the lyrics and/or some individual basic ideas and worked on it together until they reached the final product (sometimes in rehearsals, sometimes already installed in the studios during the albums production process); the only case I know of who composed everything from start to finish, made the arrangements, wrote the scores and gave it to the musicians to play everything, note for note, exactly as he had written it is Frank Zappa. The lyrics and the musical ideas on Pink Floyd's first two albums are almost entirely Syd Barrett and, through LSD, straight-up psychedelia. And that ended with his debacle and his departure from the band. Giving an opinion on that, seeing things from the outside, is very easy and I don't think it contributes anything relevant. It is more than evident that the other members of Pink Floyd had a hard time digesting the matter because Barrett's spirit/ghost/shadow was very present for a long time. What came later (removing what they did as part of the artistic project of others), was a long period of experimentation and to listen to a large part of those records, the one who has to take a good dose of LSD is the listener. That was the case until the B-side of Meddle: the infinite Echoes that partly prefigures what, for me, will be the two peak moments of Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here. Then came Animals, which I quite like without going crazy because it's based on George Orwell's Animal Farm, it goes beyond the Barrett theme and is musically different. And The Wall arrived, an album that I bought as soon as it came out, which at first I liked, not at the level of the previous ones, but which (for me, it's my personal opinion) was ruined by the Alan Parker's film because it made the whole Waters' personal psychic stuff very explicit, and honestly, you'd have to be in the right mood to smoke that cigar. I saw the film once or twice and from the album I listen some songs from time to time. The Final Cut to me is more of the political farts and more of Roger Waters' personal traumas and therefore more of a Waters solo album, with the other Pink Floyd members as session musicians. I practically passed it by. The two Pink Floyd albums without Waters have some occasional more or less interesting songs, but most of it is inconsequential. P.U.L.S.E. I quite like it for nostalgia reasons (I have the double album and I have the double DVD) and because you can see Pink Floyd live with all the trappings pretty well. It has a good part of Wish You Were Here, there is The Dark Side of the Moon complete live and some other good things. And there it all ended. In general, what makes a band a great band is the whole, the whole that is more than the sum of its parts, and when you lose sight of that, sooner or later the magic ends and everything goes to hell. It makes me very sad to see Roger Waters trying to destroy Pink Floyd, for all these years and even in the present, putting out a new version of The Dark Side of the Moon to try to erase the original album and the rest of the musicians who created that masterpiece along with it. Guys, honestly, I've heard the two new versions of Money and Time and, excuse me, they're a funeral, a pale ghost of the originals. Of course, Waters can do whatever he wants, that's his right, but apparently I don't think he's going to contribute much or achieve much with the new version. Finally, although the supporters of one and the other side are somewhat right on some point, it makes me very sad to see Pink Floyd fans divided and rubbing in their faces all the miseries (real or supposed) of musicians who gave us some sublime moments.

In Floyd’s case, it was never like other bands, not merely creative differences! It was always a case of saving/continuing the band! With Syd, they simply could not survive with Syd, since he just disintegrated and could not continue! When Roger left, it could have can been amicable. It's tough taking sides on these types of arguments since they are the only ones who know all the facts. But always felt that while Roger may have been kind of a dictator from the late '70s through the early '80s, he was the main writer with all the ideas, and the other guys were barely contributing. Just as the other Beatles had problems with Paul taking charge, SOMEONE had to or the last few albums may never have been finished. After Roger left, he was wrong to fight the band over the Floyd name and band continuing on. He admits that now. But that caused a further rift that lasted decades. But the last iteration of the feud seems to be the fault of Gilmour. Banning Roger's solo work from Floyd's site is ridiculous and unfair (especially since Gilmour's wife is allowed to have her work on the site). The final straw was Gilmour's wife posting that tirade against Roger, with Gilmour basically agreeing to everything she said. Totally despicable. You'd think these two guys, each worth hundreds of millions of dollars, in the latter part of their lives, would put all this into perspective and quit wasting so much time and energy on such a useless path. And maybe try thinking about the millions of dedicated fans of PF who are frustrated and fed up with such selfish stupidity.

He even saved the music from Comfortably Numb for The Wall instead of using it on his first solo album. -The early bootleg versions of Comfortably Numb and few other Wall tunes all are 100% Gilmour - music wise. Water's lyrics, yes. But the song structure, chorus and solos of lot of songs from Meddle through The Wall were more Gilmour than Waters.

In my mind, Pink Floyd always belonged to Syd right to the end. Most of the music if not all was either about him or inspired by him, directly or indirectly. Waters and Gilmore were there because of Syd. They would have never worked together if it weren't for Syd and their successes and failures were direct consequences of Syd's music and his sad destiny. Waters and Gilmore owe everything to Syd. Their downfall started when they lost sight of that after Wish You Were Here. Syd was what Lord of the Ring became to Peter Jackson. Sometimes your strength becomes your worst weakness and that is what happened to Roger Waters. I was struck by something Waters said that epitomized it for me. He said that at one stage he knew that if he didn't hold on, he would have had a breakdown. This was after the Dark side of the Moon. Those who have met Waters describe him as a very strong character who could do anything he put his mind to it. Well, sometimes you need to break down in order to grow up. Roger Waters missed the opportunity for growth. This is why he remains a teenager, with idealistic ideas without bothering to question the reality of those ideals. His legal proceeding to stop his ex-bandmates from using the name Pink Floyds is an example of his immature idealism. He didn't need an expensive lawyer to tell him that he had no chance of winning such an absurd claim. The same thing can be said of his politics. It is typical of undergraduate politics. There is a quote that has been attributed to Winston Churchill that rings true when you consider Roger Waters: To be young and not to be a liberal is not to have a soul but to be old and not be conservative is not to have a brain. Roger Waters lyrics were really profound and soulful but now he comes across as a crazy old man. As to Gilmour, he too is still the same teenage busker following Syd around in Europe. He is a fantastic instrumentalist but his music is like chewing gum full of flavors without being nourishing or ground-breaking compared to Pink Floyd. The beauty of the music of a good band is that the whole is greater than the sum of the individuals in the band. Waters and Gilmour not only complimented each other, but they also made up for one another's unusual shortcomings. Despite what Waters says he knows that he doesn't understand musical instruments and he is definitely rubbish at playing guitar. His opera had to be changed because musically the musicians with wind instruments in the orchestras would have had to dislodge their jaws to play those chords. David Gilmore knows on the other hand is too mild-mannered and nice to have the passion to find the right words and he is no good at arrangements, something that he has repeatedly admitted that Waters was way ahead of everyone else. In a way, their break-up was poetic justice for not picking Syd up. They maintain that they did everything they could for Syd, but I find that hard to believe. Syd's fragility was noticed by many others long before his downfall. Taking him to one of the most controversial psychiatrists of the age, R. D. Lang was an immature decision on its own. R.D. Lang didn't believe in psychiatric problems. His idea of helping patients was to let them be what they wanted to be. So, of course, he was not going to tell them that Syd needed care. They should have taken him back to Cambridge and told an adult what he had been up to. But they didn’t because let’s be honest, they were more preoccupied with chicks and Top of the Pop and Syd didn’t like any of that.

@ExiledGypsy
@ExiledGypsy 11 месяцев назад
@@hh-yc2qcSyd couldn't handle fame or the which is what Mick Jagger said about Brian Jones. A lot of creative types are sensitive and fragile. The music industry is pretty tough and record studios constantly push you as if making music is like an assembly line. He was also transitioning from how Pink Floyd was known at the Top of the Pop to finding his own sound. The sound was later developed by Gilmour and Waters. Although, it was not the sound that Syd would have liked. When they came back from the Dark of the Moon tour Syd labeled it too commercial on the day he turned up to the studio where no one recognized him. To be honest, if Gilmour and Wright couldn't stand Waters's constant pushing I doubt Syd could. It is strange that while the story of deciding not to pick Syd up has been repeated by different people no one has ever said who said it. They had planned it but weren't mature enough to recognize what kind of effect that would have had on anyone, never mind on sensitive souls like Syd. If you are going to drop your sick bandmate whom you have known since your early teens, the least you should do is take him back to his family. Remember these guys were middle class from Cambridge. They didn't come out of some housing states like Oasis already toughened up by the street. They were aware that Syd was doing too much drugs. Again just see what happened to Brian Jones the very night Mick and Keith fired him from the band. It is interesting the way Waters now says, I wrote to his family, with such a righteous tone that it is clear that the madam is protesting too much. The two things are not compatible. The concern on the one hand and the callousness on the other hand.

@@MatthewLewis68 Actually, Dave's first solo album featured some great rock 'n roll guitar playing by Dave who was reunited with his old band from his pre-Pink Floyd days, Joker's Wild, and one could easily hear exactly how big of an influence he had on both previous and later Pink Floyd songs. In fact, the basic musical concept (chords, etc.) of one of the biggest songs, most well known and often played songs from THE WALL, "Comfortably Numb" was actually a song that didn't make it onto Dave's first album (mainly due to time and space issues). Dave's second solo album has some good tunes on it, a couple of which Peter Townsend (of The Who) actually collaborated on with Dave, but then, what would Townsend know about song writing? The basic litmus test to be applied here is this: After listening to an artist's music, does any of it stick in your head and you find yourself singing and humming it even when there is no actual music being played? With Dave's musics the answer is yes. With Waters, well, not so much. In fact, if you hear any Pink Floyd song that has a great melody or interesting chord progression, chances are pretty good that Dave and/or Richard Wright wrote it. If you hear any Pink Floyd vocal that is not being sung in tune, then chances are pretty good that Waters is singing it.

This is a very good history and summary of the issues involved. The only thing I somewhat disagree with is the influence of drugs. It obviously played a role with Syd Barrett, but other than Rick, there was not extensive hard drug use. I believe that Roger would have left irregardless. He felt strongly that the songwriting and creative ideas that he brought were the keys, rightly or wrongly, and to some degree, despite the fact that he has often praised David's guitar playing, he felt this was secondary and basically replaceable. I think this was one of the core roots of the feud.

Anybody who plays guitar like Gilmour is just an imitator. Barret Floyd was not top of the charts, and the one Pink Floyd album with no Gilmour in it is still the lowest selling Pink Floyd album. The Pink Floyd sound that got famous was the David Gilmour sound. Proven by the fact that when he toured as David Gilmour, not Pink Floyd, it sounded just like Pink Floyd, and Waters can't pull that off, even with Gilmour imitators in his band. Waters deliberately hires Gilmour imitators. That's an admission in itself, really, isn't it? This side of Pink Floyd has always been such a shame. They together created Dark Side and a raft of other great albums (I always pick Atom Heart Mother if someone asks me which is my favourite) and they 'peaked' at The Wall before tensions tore it all apart. Final Cut I have always termed "The Wall part 2" and Roger has since never really made anything that doesn't seem to echo back to the Wall - he found his style and musical palette I suppose. All the Floyd stuff after Roger left has also never had that 'lightning in a bottle' feel to their earlier masterpieces - and I say that despite David being probably my favourite guitarist of all time. It's not 'crap' but neither is it magical; there is a spark missing. I think we have all accepted that there will never be a 'real' Pink Floyd ever again and for Roger and David to still be daggers drawn with each other is a sad stain on the legacy of the music, especially now Rick has gone (I confess that hearing of his passing is one of the very few times I have shed tears over the death of someone I did not know).

There is a deep irony and hypocrisy of Waters writing about the dangers of authoritarian totalitarianism throughout his musical career. But, I realize the objective truth of the matter isn’t simple. Pink Floyd songs also emphasize love and forgiveness conquering pain, suffering, and pride. Hopefully we can see mercy and compassion outshine the hurtfulness again before their time is gone.

I am surprised that drug use had led to the breakup of Pink Floyd.Didn’t these guys learn something so many years ago when Syd Barrett engaged himself with LSD and other psychedelic drugs and then wound up leaving the band due to his mental health problems?Such hypocrisy!…”Pink man,Pig man…Ah-Ha!…Charade you are!!!”…Karl Schumaker 🐷🐷🐷🐷🐷

There was no reconciliation at Live 8. Look at the body language at the end, Waters drawing together the distinctly unenthusiastic Gilmour, Mason & Wright. How controlling, how Waters.

It was awfully presumptions of Waters to appoint himself the MC of that performance. Another aspect of that performance that hasn't aged well is the fact that Wright got very little camera time compared to the others.

you did a great job as making a fair video on a complicated topic here . i was hoping you would have included the part where DG went to alan parker and promised him final cut of the wall film . which was the act of betrayal that forced roger from his own band. i believe that was the last straw for roger . personally i feel bad for everyone involved . i realize roger may have become unbearable and perhaps even a bit on why they were fighting and all that but i try not to choose sides so much and i also credit Roger as he was also at the helm while they created some of the greatest albums ever if not THE best . I feel badly for how Roger has been treated , not just by DG and co , but by the fan base , Roger should not be banned from the pink floyd website- that is a tough one to swallow but its also complicated considering the divide . on the Drug issue which is very relevant considering they were considered a drug band rather than a "human condition" act as i see them , as far as i remember the situation they were divided as soon as they tasted massive sucess. it was dg and rick who were the "druggies in the band , the other two were drinkers . roger took acid two or maybe three times in his life , once on the isle of patmos , als he admits to smoking hash every day for one year which was while they were working on DSOTM but the claim is that nick and roger where boozers. if you look , you can find more info about Daves love affair with his bollivian marching powder , which is a real horrific addiction that does things to your brain / personality. if you ever knew someone who is a cocaine person , well i feel for you. that drug can turn a wicked , evil manipulating person and turn them into a demigod of evil. that drug is packed full of so many demons its unlike the others. So i do feel for DG , and his loved ones for what they have endured and i am not surpised of his failed marriage and abandoned family as he spawned 8 children from multiple marriages. i saw the dg pf tours , multiple times , i am not a fan of his version of this band - at all , people like guy pratt have disgraced the pink floyd name with his chicanery and childlike mocking of roger on world stages- dont get me started on that guy- which is a perfect example of what you will get when you let the monkeys out of the zoo. i also saw every single one of rogers tours for all the solo albums- and every other tour he produced. in my mind there is no contest for who was a sucess and who was an embaressment of this bands name and legacy. while DG and company may have neded up with their name in the guiness book , for the power consumption of the bands final tour , well that says alot about smoke and mirrors needed to prop up the rotton corpse , so bloated it had become. FIRSTLY i am a pink floyd fan , because of these complications i am also a roger waters fan . i am not a fan of dg , especially how he has acted , nor am i a fan of the music he has released in more recent times. I was able to see roger every time he came to town, but i never saw dg , which is a shame but he charges way too much money for seats . the last time he was here it was 350 dollars for a nosebleed seat . DG is a one percenter . DG represents everything this band took a stand against . this is why i choose to not support him. However being an admirer of Rogers is a no brainer choice, i have constant reminders as i pay attention to what is going on in the media, and the reason i support Roger is his message has remained singular ,and because he has demonstrated such IMMENSE integrity as an incredible human being . all that social media and comment section hate against RW is ridiculous , its all baseless . people who lash out at RW and support DG show their hand . perhaps they have an excuse, they are ignorant , unaware , because they are simply uncapable of connecting any dots or they are simple , young folk and they have not paid their dues . they are not fans of pink floyd . they are mlor fans . that was the first pink floyd they heard , on the radio . their uncle smoked a (the first) joint with them , and told them storys about the concert where they insufflated duffed blow (highly toxic powders marketed under the implication that it is in fact cocaine sold in minute quantity containing mostly industrial fibers and asbestos but no true active ingredient other than flame retardant toxins containing other stimulants such as OTC stay-woke caffeined pills , animal tranquillizers such as canine deliriants or methamphetamine and other rat poisons for effect) but in their retelling of the event its LSD . these are the types of morons who are in lord gilmours service in the comment section. they live to lash out at roger , constantly . saying things like "DG is the real musician of pf , and he sings better ". all of that hatred and negativity is exactly what this music was on about. This negative spirit directly contradicts the message of the music , which i thought that was hinting towards us TYRYING at being a better person , operating out of love rather than greed . self-lessness over selfishness. Please undestand i take no pride in the following statement and i include myself when i type these words. people are dumb, really really stupid . i will cease typing after i copy and paste this FZ quote to illustrate my point on your typical comment section pink floyd fan - Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.

Here is the truth why the Roger-David/Rick feud started up again and then snowballed! It started in 2013 when David said NO to Roger's Israel boycott when The Rolling Stones were set to play Tel Aviv. Nick joined Roger on it but David said no and Roger claimed he was OK with it but apparently wasn't as Roger went back to attacking David and Rick in 2017. Roger was advertised on the site regularly (I may add) up to the release of Is This the Life We Really Want? and up to the start of the Us and Them Tour in 2017. I think Conservative, Jewish and Christian Fans of the band (I happen to be one) who are Trump supporters walking out of shows because of Roger's hate for Orange Man Bad and so on alarmed FEd (who runs the Pink Floyd sites, NOT DAVID AND NICK). Plus Roger's attacks on David and Rick snowballed the reigniting of the feud when he said "I'm twice the musician David and Rick were".

Waters appeared to have acted like a dick during the late seventies and early eighties although he was under a great deal of pressure. However, these days he is one of those rare musicians prepared to stand up for what is right. He doesn't need to and is rich enough but he stands up for the people of Palestine and is against the American war in Ukraine. He is being smeared more now he is in the right than when he was in the wrong, all those years ago.

Rogers words, David’s music and singing. That’s Pink Floyd. Like him or hate him,(I’m not a fan) Roger is a songwriting genius. The music they made together is one of a kind and timeless. Personally I think they’re more important than the Beatles . . .I will say this, David stopped outright with music and touring.. to this day Roger is the only chance we have at a live PF show. For that I’m thankful to Roger

The attitude of Pink Floyd in recent times has made me lost interest in the band . The band started as a Quartet with Barrett as Lead Vocals and songwriter . Many references of Sid during Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish you we're here tells me many things . 14 Studio Albums produced only 4 stands out for me . All 4 albums are post Sid Barrett . 2 of those albums I have already mention and the other 2 are Monterey Laps of Reason and The Wall . Roger Waters might had been a good songwriter but you can not have songs without good musicians as in Gilmore, Mason & Richard Wright. Pink Floyd is a collective effort from all . As for Roger Waters, to me his now a stain on the group as i would put him in the same kettle of fish as Axel Rose of Guns n Roses.

Drugs, (acid in particular and in large doses), took out Sid when his mind likely fried in its own juices. But shear rock-star egomania got to Roger, and later, to David. So much of Floyd's rocky journey is predictable in hind-sight. Fame, money and self-importance has a way of turning clear thinking brains into gelatinous mush.

Unrfortunately Waters' psychological dynamics which go back to childhood and the death of his father makes him a bit unstable. It also seems to skew his poltical perspective. He rails against Trump but the very forces that oppose Trump are the same tyrants that he illustrates in such a talented way in The Wall. I know that Waters is a driving force behind the band and the Floyd would not be what they are without him but personally, I think Gilmour has a better voice. Also, I never saw what all the hype about Syd Barrett was. Floyd did their best work after him. And frankly, Barrett's stuff sounds more like Children's nursery rhimes.

“The tendency to cast Roger as the ultimate villain, though tempting, is probably misplaced.” meanwhile *Roger stands holding a gun to Nicks head as he writes* “Hmm that’s pretty good isn’t it Nick, maybe this writing thing will work out eh” This is a joke but in all seriousness Nick is right, whilst Roger was pretty out of touch with how he handled Rick it was something that needed to be addressed same as how Roger’s behaviour needed to be addressed as well. In the end I’m happy that Pink Floyd was able to produce some of the best albums ever and that all ended happy despite Dave and Roger’s shortcomings with each other.

Roger had some bite in his writing, even though I think he's badly mistaken in his socio-political opinions. I admit that I only came to realise that in the last few years. The long overdue return of populism has exposed the left/right paradigm for the scam that it is. Roger sounds like a champion virtue-signaller these days. It was probably the clash of two alphas that made the band crackle with energy. It always sesms to end the same way. Nothing good CAN last forever - when success becomes self-aware it often implodes.
