hi guys!! glad to see you are enjoying this video, maybe you will enjoy also listening to The Embryo by Floyd check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YaprUQnS3DA.html
I was lucky enough to be at the recording of this song back in September 1971 when I was a mere 17 year old. The performance took place at the BBC Paris studio for the In concert programme hosted by John Peel. This was their opening number and the concert also featured One of These Days and Echoes I regularly attended these John Peel hosted concerts which were recorded on Thursday evenings and broadcast on Radio 1 on Sunday afternoons. Amongst the other bands that I saw were Rod Stewart and the Faces, Deep Purple, Supertramp, Fairport Convention, Humble Pie, Roxy Music, T Rex, Family, Atomic Rooster......plus many many more. A fantastic time and all for free as tickets for BBC recordings were complimentary. All you had to do was keep writing in to apply, include a stamped addressed envelope and four tickets would be sent to you by return post. Amazing!
I used to listen to the Peel Sessions in Paris in the early 80s. That guy did more for music than many. I heard Tears for Fears before they were even out of England. I can't believe you were at that recording session. That is hard to top for me. Good to hear. Thanks
I couldn't take your comment for granted either. I took my Telecaster off, placed it in it's stand and had to reply. Thank you for reminding me of the gifts we have received.
@Jeremy Marple...Do you realise your comment is now just over say bout 3 years old. I agree with the other 2 replies and all they say. Jeremy, I ask you this question; Do you know where the inspiration was found to create this exstrodenary song? It's just as amazing as the original version, plus all the other versions that follow. Thank you for the very meaningful words you gave to all of us, reminding us to never forget. Take Care and Be Well. D.J.G. 🇬🇧🇺🇸
This is an incredible performance and arrangement. Just WOW! Funny how everyone on the comment section is praising Gilmour but few mentioned Wright's organ playing on this performance. The melodies, harmonies, counterpoint, timbre, patience, accompaniment etc..., just wonderful to sink my ears into it. The way he lifts Gilmour onto a floating cloud, with so much feeling. Never overplaying. Super soulful and gentle. Just listen...
David played a solo on these early BBC recordings that drove me for 20 years. I never forgot what could be done. I will never forget. I still play guitar still, and I still relish in these recordings. They remind me of when I was wondering what the hell is he doing. I know now, but it never changes the magic.
I love their interwoven instruments- Roger's bass leading the dark tunes alongside David's amazing guitar.. Richard's amazing keyboards spinning in and out... All strongly/softly by Nick's on pointe drumming... I've loved this music for 50+years..! ❤️
One of my favorite Pink Floyd performances. But I must add that this song would not be as great as it is without the exquisite Richard Wright. His contributions to PF are often overlooked. God rest his talented soul.
ive never overlooked him or anyone. without rick there couldnt be a floyd and roger was just ignorent asf back then. i love rick on every single album and he truly made some master piece work for them. endless river really shows his side of floyd expecially on side 3!!
+Asmita Verma You're S0 right! Seen them live 1987, 1988, 1994, Waters The Wall 2012, Four days David Gilmour live in Chicago! He will be playing this I think! In US set list, if so will put video into group "Into The Floyd" on Facebook! Come join the fun!
Out of all the time and places I could be living in this wonderful universe, I'm thankful I live during a time and place that I can listen to this masterpiece..
It just fills my heart with joy. The band that brings me joy, accompanies me in times of desparation, gives me hope and makes sure to let me know everything will be fine. I can't see myself without Pink Floyd
Gilmour has a heart and soul when playing Guitar. He describes a story in the solo. Others just play riffs. Its a major difference. I try to do that in my own, but who knows. Gilmour has been my inspiriation
You read what he says about his style, he wasn't the fastest player or anything like that . It's the emotion that comes from his playing, so expressive full of emotion.
When David Gilmour puts on his duck face I can just close my eyes and feel his soul ooze out through the strings. I don't know that I can say that of anyone else, and there are a lot of great artists out there. Gilmour is truly in a league of his own.
He really is. Different level than anyone. I've seen lots of great musicians, live, and he is just alien. I've seen Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Billy Gibbons, Buddy Guy, Carlos Santana, Phil Keaggy, B.B. King, Warren Haynes, Stevie Winwood, Jerry Garcia, and many many more play live. None of it ever was 1/4 as great as David Gilmour.
Yes, Imagine. I am you and you are me...😮😊😊😊 And everyone else. WE are all one...❤ Coneectet to ore with the source 😊 I am German and i am learning English....❤ And i Love the world and Pink Floyd....😂🎉😂😂🎉😊😊❤🍀
This one of the few examples, where the Pink Floyd re-invented a song especially for the live performance. It is more rock-oriented, it is more room for improvisation. Pink Floyd are the masters of dynamic rock performances. Sometimes very lyric and tender and then again explosive-ecstatic
His voice and playing was the voice of god to me. I had all this u tube stuff on bootleg when I was 13 or older in 1983 plus or maybe a bit earlier but since I was 7 I used to listen to obscured by clouds before going to 2and or 3rd grade
He just has such a gorgeous voice and style… and his guitar playing? well lol we don’t even have time to get into all that here… for me he’s the ultimate, the epitome of masterclass. Timeless and bursting with talent. 🤍 He sings like an angel
after listening to this i went outside and saw the sunset. i sat for maybe about 2 hours playing this song over and over in my head. my mother was busy cooking, dad was working, my sister was studying and all that i wanted to do was die listening to this song while staring into the hazy gaze of the sunset wondering whether mankind will ever realize whats truly important. then the fat old sun fell as i cried thinking about this.
Life is truly important and our planet, happily there is great hope for our planet despite the current situation. Our Creator has designed our planet to survive and life upon it will survive, it's wonderful to observe the genius of God's creation and appreciate his many wonders. I have always loved this song as well as Grantchester Meadows on Ummagumma as well as others.
Perhaps -technically-. Mason isn't the most "trained" drummer... (He even admits to having zero training)- But- He -feels- the music and gives the music such a perfect heartbeat, that it is just a perfect, crisp part of Pink Floyd--I find His playing amazing........
I'm a huge Gilmour fan but I will readily admit that the band worked because of the four of them. Pink Floyd officially died with the passing of Richard Wright. No one will ever fill his shoes. R I P Richard
could not have said it better. Just listen to the difference between Fat Old Sun and the work on The Wall and Final Cut where Rick's input is minimal or non-existent. You can hear Pink Floyd's dependence on Rick's input to make the band "Pink Floyd"
I'm so far up David Gilmour's ass that he could play one note and I'd be like "holy shit that was the best thing I've ever heard 10/10". So THIS is just perfection to me.
I'm absolutely obsessed with Dave too, but don't let Rick Wright go by the wayside here. He is phenomenal on this particular rendition of this fantastic song.
Bainbridge 40...That's F_cking GREAT❗ Love ur honesty through ur HUMOR❗....💯Very Funny my friend, Thank you...D.J.G.🔺™ BRAVO....!! Keep Listing I'm pleased you enjoy the music❗❗ Take Care and Be Well..🇬🇧🇺🇸🌍™
Pink Floyd are probably the only band that can consistently make live versions of a song better than the album, this and Echoes at Pompeii being the best examples of that theory.
This version it's just glorious. It takes everything that made Fat Old Sun an amazing tune and magnifies it. Stretches it. It's just pure genius. Wanna listen the song note by note? Go listen the godamn album!
Without doubt the best live version of FOS ever recorded. And one could argue the BBC 1971 recording is the best ever live recording of the band - it is all amazing.
This song was considered for Floyd's "Best of" album "Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd 2001". Gilmour confirmed it in an interview and shared he made a case for it, but no Atom Heart Mother songs are represented on ""Echoes". When Floyd's manager, Steve O'Rourke died in 2003, "Fat Old Sun" and "Great Gig In The Sky" were played by Gilmour, Richard Right and Nick Mason at his funeral. High praise indeed.
Here's the paragraph from Wikipedia. Gilmour liked the song so much. He wanted it on the Album. O'Rourke didn't want the song on the album, but I take he liked the song and it meant a lot to him and the band.
jsvkia1 From Wikipedia - This song was one of several to be considered for the band's "best of" album, Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd (2001), as remarked by James Guthrie, the producer of Echoes. Gilmour himself confirmed this story on Johnnie Walker's Radio 2 drivetime show in 2002 that he had made a case for this song to be included, but was out-voted and the album Atom Heart Mother goes unrepresented on that album. "Fat Old Sun" is perhaps best described as a pastoral, a hymn of praise to the countryside (as several early Pink Floyd songs were, such as "Grantchester Meadows" from Ummagumma and "Green Is the Colour" from More). The bell sounds heard at the beginning and the end of the song were later used again in "High Hopes" from their album The Division Bell and in "Louder than Words" from their album The Endless River. When the Floyd's manager, Steve O'Rourke, died in 2003, Gilmour, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason played "Fat Old Sun" and "The Great Gig in the Sky" at O'Rourke's funeral.
Lady BlackstarDust And it’s such a beautiful song. Last thing at night or on a Sunday morning. Classic Floyd. Davids voice on Remember that Night (I think that’s when he played it) was amazing.
Fat Old Sun & Echoes. A pair of tunes from almost 45 years ago, that are still in a league of their own, or better yet, different ballgame all together. Just beautifully crafted and perfectly composed pieces, from the only band that could ever deliver such works.
I've been listening to Floyd for damn near 40 years. I have heard a lot of their songs, but Fat Old Sun is still my favorite. What a great song. Peace!!!!
Had taped this on a cassette back in 1991. Would get home from work in the summer and as the Mrs was preparing supper would take the 4 kids on a 1/2 hour ride on the surrounding country roads west of Roseville IL. This was the 1st song played in that 1984 Dodge P/U. Windows down cassette player turned up and cruising 35-45 mph down country lanes. I'll never forget it. Kids ranged from 13 to 3 back then. 3 oldest definitely remember those evening drives, the baby not so much. But they are Good memories for me of the music and my alone time with my 4 children.
best FOS version ever...b-y f-a-r-!!!! Hope more Pink Floyd fanatics would hear this rendering from the Atom Heart Mother classic...classic and amazing!
@@briansutton3088 well, Gilmour and basically every guitar player thought Hendrix was from snotjer planet on guitar so he probably was heavily influenced by him
Had the very distinct pleasure of attending back to back David Gilmour concerts in Toronto Mar 31 and April 1st 2016 and the version of Fat Old Sun was mind blowing. The man is still so very much on top of his game. (entire concert was amazing both night)
Actually this particular version as done 9/30/71 At the Paris Theater in London. The set was........... 1. Introduction 2. Fat Old Sun 3. One Of These Days 4. Echoes 5. Blues
This song was my in my first experience a with LSD. I was in a forest connecting to a beach...it was beautiful. The solos made the whole experience feel alive. Damn Pink Floyd you are transendent.
You hear David growing increasingly frustrated and nervous with the vocals until he hits the guitar solo where he stomps the song in outrage and comes back with a victorious return, freshly charged.
Im addicted to music but i never write comments to them. Im now hearing every pink floyd albums and they are realy the best. This music just gives me the feeling of harmony with world.
used to listen to this song again and again on the brightish nights of the Nordkapp during the summers of 81-85 on breaks from the stinging work at the shrimps factories... it was and remains for me the essence of beauty and grace...
Su musica original y fina. Amo a pink floyd.Los 5 son lo maximo, cada uno en su momento como un engrenaje. Por eso llego hacer una excelente banda.Desde Mexico mi admiracion.
