What Clare Torry did for this song will go down in history as the most emotional, moving piece of lyricless vocals ever recorded. Her contribution is what you would feel and how you would react when you're told someone you dearly love is passing and there's nothing you can do about it. The epitome of hopelessness and sorrow coming from the depths of your soul. The band didn't comment after her performance because, like many of us, they were breath-taken, speechless, and probably on the verge of tears. She was absolutely irreplaceable on this track. I love Pink Floyd, but her input alone made this song what it is. My mother recently passed away, and Clare's vocals sum up how I feel exactly. The planets were perfectly aligned for this once-in-a-lifetime album.
I'm a 61 year old male, and this song still brings me to tears since the first time I heard it when it came out. Clare Torry was unarguably THE best! After her passing (R.I.P., Clare), it took THREE singers to take her place in later live concerts, and they STILL could not hold a candle to her. Here she is, live, in one of her last concerts...the crowd reaction(s) affirm her position as one of the all-time greats! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EwsINusEWVY.html Anyone wanting another truly heart-felt song about lost loved ones should listen to this one, and cry tears of joy and happiness (Great Gig in the Sky was my choice of funeral song until I heard this): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ASCZ5KHX0Rw.html
There is one female vocal that is better. Laura Martin's on Jean Michel Jarre's live version of September (Live in London). To be honest, Im a huge Floyd fan but Martin's singing on Jarre's song blows Torry's out of the water. And if you watch the video version - not recommended because it has fireworks noise in the background that is distracting (edited out of the audio version) - Martin doesnt even break a sweat, even though shes bringing something primal out, making your hair stand on end, and disembowelling you with her voice all at the same time. Best to listen to the audio version of this loud and in the dark. ps September is a tribute to Dulcie September, killed by the apartheid regime in south africa in 1988 and a tribute to all victims of terrorism around the world. pps it takes a long time in the song before Martin starts her solo vocal. But you'll feel it instantly when she starts. And if it doesnt bring tears to your eyes youre not human.
Well done a sincere and felt reaction. I could see the pain on your face, slowly progressing towards acceptance. I liked your introduction to this video, the reading of the lyrics before the song, was well thought out.
I bought it in 1981 at 14. I went straight back home, locked the door to my room, put on my new ear phones, drew the curtains, turned the light off, sat down, put it on. Oh, how I remember that first time...
Rick Wright and Clare Torry said more in this song with a piano and a scream than most people will be able to express in a lifetime. It's just miraculous.
That was a great reaction to The Great Gig in the Sky, I've known this song for over 40 years and for the first time I actually felt your moments of fear. This sad song kinda makes me happy because it's so beautiful that I want it played at my funeral❤️
When I said I felt your moments of fear, I actually meant that I got scared, I also felt your fright too! I'm an empathetic; I feel for others more than I feel for myself. I'm surprised it's not a sickness...?
Just watching your facial expression i knew it took you somewhere and it was some kind of a emotional struggle . It is amazing how some music can take you places where you least expected.
Pink Floyd was an expensive proposition at the time. When we listened to Pink Floyd in the 1970s, they smoked more weed than any other music.😍Long live the Hammond Organ and Leslie Sound 😘 Greetings from Heidelberg / Germany
This brings me to tears every time i hear it. Even after 40 years. Claire Torry did this on the first take. She takes us through all the stages of dying from denial to anger to grief and finally acceptance. My mother passed away a few months ago. I cant express with words what this masterpiece does without words.
I was on a beach in San Diego when I heard this for the first time. My friends and I were getting ready to go to a midnight movie at a nearby theater. The car was pulled up on the beach and we listened to its stereo with our backs pressed up against the car while we watch the waves come in. We were smoking and enjoying the music. With the tide came millions of small silver fish. The grunion were running. It was as close as I have ever come to a mystical experience.
This song is very powerful. It transitions from the lie we all tell ourselves about death, that is no big deal that we all have to go sometime, and then the song is taken over by the reality of death, the actual fight and terror of dying. Clare Torry just puts that lie at the beginning to rest with her reality and it's powerful.
Richard Wright requested this song for his funeral during his lifetime. He asked Durga Mc Broom, a backing singer from the Pink Floyd World Tour, to sing the song at his funeral. There is still an unconfirmed rumor that Durga was accompanied on the piano by none other than John Lord from Deep Purple.
Do you have any actual evidence that supports this, as it doesn't seem to fit the spontaneous nature of Torry's contribution. For example, a quote from any of Floyd/Parsons/Torry that they knew of these "stages" and consciously applied them to the song's structure?
@@psbarrow I've looked but I cannot find anything directly from Pink Floyd stating this so I'm going with what I was taught throughout the years...it does make sense though.
@@capetowntrikeman No, given the spontaneous circumstances as described by Torry, Parsons, and the band members themselves, it makes no sense at all. Nobody I've asked has ever produced any evidence about this - it seems to be a psychological projection from someone who's read Kubler-Ross. And the myth continues.
I love your interpretation of this song, I agree Claire Torry does a great job of vocalizing this song, and I think you are correct that it sounds like initially she is struggling with the concept of death nd eventually succumbs to the relation that it will happen eventually
Yo... Omg u got it. Like the literal meaning of the song. Processing death... Anger, grief, then acceptance. But bruh I'm impressed. If u didn't look it up and this was an honest take, dude u killed it. Great reaction and on point comprehension. Congrats
Don't be frightened, because you are greater than the some of your "physical" parts. A conscious soul cannot die in the traditional sense. Your essence will carry on in other lifetimes, if that is what you seek. What I find interesting is that I'm frightened of the complete opposite, living forever in this physical realm is not something I would want. This physical universe is very harsh, it can extract a heavy toll on our lives, and that toll extends into future lifetimes, which can keep us here reincarnating for a very long time. Perhaps the universe is so old because it takes so long for our conscious souls to make that long journey all the way through.
Best recap of this song yet from a reaction POV. Besides the incredible vocal performance, obviously in a class by itself, the singer, to me, was expressing the journey of death (i.e., the departure for that great sky gig) and was terrified as being propelled into the unknown. But, once on the other side, was calmed by the wonder of the new reality. Being born has the same story line as well but the song's title leads us to the other scenario. None of the other "reaction" commentators got that. This lady had an inkling. Well done.
When I first heard this song it induced panic in me, my life will end and there's nothing I can do. I think it's the unknown that I'm frightened of however, I sleep and at that time I don't realise I exist. That's what comforts me. It's okay to be scared just don't let it consume you or you won't live. Nice sincere reaction. Thanks
I'm 53 and have heard this song (and album) a million times in my life. Clare Torry's performance on this song STILL give me chills! Amazing that she recorded it in one take!
I was 14 years old when this Album came out i'm 62 now its still in my collection and i still listen to it, great reaction try listening to the whole Album 'Dark Side of the Moon'
I've seen lots of reactions to this deep and emotional tune and yours is the best. You get it 100%. Good on you young lady, you have emotional intelligence by the bucket load. 🙏
Words to live by... This and 'A pillow of winds' are you my personal favorite Pink Floyd songs I listen to this song whenever a loved one dies, be it animal, human, it helps me release and come to peace
Hi Peyemi, I've always known this song was about death, yet it's so beautiful I interprit it as a part of my soul in a happy way. When I saw your reaction I felt your fear. As time went by my daughter asked, "what's wrong Dad" I told her the differences in the way we percieved the song. She heard the song; she became frightened. I asked her to listen to the song for it's beautiful side. A few days later she had her headphones on and now she became Pink Floyded. Thanx!
Young Lady, if only you could have mimed along to this. Your expressions just fitted this tune so perfect. You are a Deep Careing person who only wishes for a better world in everyone i can tell. God bless you honey.
Death is something so many people are scared of. We don't know anything about what happens when you die or after, so it is very scary. It's permanent and you think "How can the world go on without me in it?" It's human nature to think that way. You just have to remember that the world existed before you were in it as well. Death happens to every single one of us. Enjoy the time you have here and now. This is the message from the song "Time". You have to be sure not to waste a moment. Leave your mark in the world so that when you do finally pass on, you will always be alive in memories.
never in the history of humanity has so much emotion been communicated thru so few words.its brilliance is mind blowing.how a group of 20s aged musicians could write such "beyond this world" music is completely beyond my comprehension.
Clare Torry did 2 &1/2 takes on this masterpiece. Stopped in the middle of the third take. And she left the recording studio. Never hearing this until the album hit the music stores... I still get chills after listening to this for 40 years !
What a beautiful way to open your reaction video, with spoken words from Floyd's song! And your interpretation is deep too. Thanx! This song was the final song on side one of the album, and was really like the second half of the previous song, Breathe, IMO.

Processing the song is the exact same process we all go through listening to this genius work, the same reason they made it, processing life, not to scare you, but like thinking about the universe; Pink Floyd make you realise how small we are in it and how when we take time to listen and think about life that we all face the same emotional awareness about our lives as we get close to the end of it. it takes a special group of people who are passionate about life and music to come up with this song, they have always been humble for the most part and aware of life's fragility and just gave us the music to it.
