This is song is the 5 stages of grief. The music and Clare's voice embodies the process of grief; denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance.
Watching your reaction made me as emotional as the song always has. You were obviously touched. Deep is the song, without lyrics. Really good work playing the song without interruption. It’s one of the reasons we were so affected by it.
One of my all time Pink Floyd favs, About death and dying. When I reunite with my forever 32 tear old son, and so many other beloveds, we will be at the great gig in the sky, for sure1
Open the Pink Floyd vault! You will love them. David Gilmour is the guitarist that you will hear him solo on several songs, and his playing will stay with you for a long long time. Enjoy.
You've started something big now! This is not a typical Pink Floyd song, if there is such a thing You can't go too far wrong with Floyd, I've been listening to this for over 40 years and it still sounds brilliant. Dark Side of The Moon is one of the best albums of the 1970's, it was released in '73. In the US, it was in the charts for 962 weeks! You really need to listen to the whole album, with headphones, in a dark room. The second half of the album is about the stages on life, this is the dying part The live show on the "Pulse" tour is something you need to get in to. You can listen to any Pink Floyd and be amazed by it.
One thing I think that probably most people appreciate online is the comment you said about being worried about reacting in case you didn't get it. Music like everything else is not for everyone so it's great to see genuine reactions. Oh and your comment about it making you feel something? That's spot on. Good music will do that and sometimes like you said you're not sure what it was. I think in this case that while you don't know consciously, there's a very primal visceral feel to the howled singing and the serenity that leads into it combine with those little snippets of people speaking. Final comment, well done for being brave enough to do it. 👍
Pink Floyd does songs about life and society that are pretty deep at times while their music transports you into the story. They did albums that really should be listened to in order.
This song is not typical of Pink Floyd. But it's not like anyone else, either. This one was an unexpected masterpiece that even the band could not have foreseen. But the fact that they put it on the album was a very Pink Floyd decision.
You must listen to the albums, “Dark Side of the Moon”, and “Wish You Were Here” then “Animals” and “The Wall”. that’s why so many people are wearing Pink Floyd shirts. I’m 64 I still listen to them, their music will go on forever
PINK FLOYD, "GREAT GIG IN THE SKY". The voice you hear is this singer Clare Torry. Since as she said, wasn't given any direction on what the band members would want. She decided to treat the musical number. She would perform as a instrument, and improvised her part including the screams. As she was experiencing her final moments of life. After she comes to the realization of reality and quiets down. After a couple stanzas. There is a softly spoken voice, saying. "If you hear this whisper, you're dying". Which is somewhat indicated as the song music starts drawing to a close. Her earthly voice turns into an echo as it leaves her body. Is complete with her final sounds, are uttered with the piano's final chord, and deafening silence.
The voice at 5:12 is that of Patricia Watts, girl friend of roadie Peter Watts. She says, "I never said I was frightened of dying." A few years later, Peter Watts was found dead of a heroine overdose. Afterwards the band provided financial support for Watts two children, one of whom is actress Naomi Watts.
For your next one, 'Comfortably Numb' from 'Pulse Remastered'. If you would like to experience the vocals from 'Gig' again, also look at Pulse Concert. Not Clare's original vocals but more moving for being visible.
Good for you dear................great reaction.just remember that this is neither a typical Floyd song nor rock song for that matter...it's pretty special and unique to say the least. Peace and love
The spoken parts are from working class roadies that worked for the band. They actually recorded some famous people, including Paul McCartney, but decided not to use those because it didn’t feel real enough. Even the singer on this, was not famous or well known. They really wanted this song to feel very raw and real, and they certainly succeeded I don’t know if you heard it, but at the very end the piano is tuned up, which always represents to me her spirit lifting up into the ether. Stages of acceptance at your own death. Pink Floyd is just different, it can make you uncomfortable if you’re not ready for it, but it is something we all need. (This is the only song that this woman sung on, every song is different, but they all touch your soul).
I liked watching your reaction and hearing your thoughts on this song. You really seemed to feel it. There’s a reason Pink Floyd T shirts are still commonly seen being worn by people 50 years later!
@@Iamssreactions not only because their music is really good and timeless. But, this specific album holds the record for total and consecutive time spent on the billboard top 100 charts. From 1973 until 1988! Fifteen straight years. That’s pretty impressive.
The entire album this song is from hits just like this one (if not harder). And the same is true for much of the music they wrote. Floyd is the whole package. They are as intellectually sophisticated as they are musically. They pushed out into the frontier of creativity, contributed to the defining of an era, and they never compromised when it came to the quality of their art.
You chose for your first song one that will not Enlighten you at all about Pink Floyd! That was a session singer named Claire Tory who's brought into vocalize over Richard Wrights one of Pink Floyd's keyboardist instrumental songs. Try from the Dark Side of the Moon the Same album this song came from either the song "Time" "Money" or " Us And Them" and you'll get three songs that all sound different from one another as well but with lyrics! Great gig in the sky is a song about the five stages of grief and you can hear it and Miss Claire Tori's voice as the song goes along!
Pink Floyd is a band. Their original founder, Syd Barrett, named the band after two blues artists he was a fan of, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. For this album, Dark Side of The Moon (1973), it was Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason. Definitely continue on your PF journey.
Oh wow 🥰 Lovely .... Got into this in 73 ....... And in all honesty, personally, I prefer to react to art without a backstory .... I like to listen to music fresh without a bio, with the idea behind the song etc ... Thats me, some here will give you a detailed construct and that may help you get into the music in a different way
As has been said, this is a unique song for Pink Floyd, and as stunning as it is, it's not a typical song for them, try Another Brivk in The Wall or Wish You Were Here. Can I recommend you listen to Mike Oldfield? Check out Sentinel from the Live at Edinburgh Castle concert, it is the first track from the concert which is the Live premiere of Tubular Bells 2 if you like it you should listen to the whole concert. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HMksPmJiMV4.html
I've been listening to this album for decades, always played at our drinking parties.Prefer the song "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd(a band) off the album by the same title.
Not a track I would pick to "introduce" Pink Floyd " Personally I would say start with" Money ".. Audio Only Album version NOT OFFICIAL VIDEO! as that's a cut down radio version 😉
Is this song about death or dying?…. No. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.
