Pink Floyd is without a doubt one of the greatest classic rock bands of all time. They began in the 60s with Roger Waters on bass, Nick Mason on drums, Richard Wright on organ and Syd Barrett on lead guitar and vocals. Syd penned their early singles like See Emily Play and most of their 1967 album Piper at the Gates of Dawn (Astronomy Domine, Interstellar Overdrive). Their live shows featured unique light shows. However due to Syd's breakdown he was replaced with David Gilmour on guitar in 1968. This would become Pink Floyd's classic lineup through A Saucerful of Secrets, More, Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother. 1971's Meddle would turn out to be an important staple for the band with the rocking opener One of these Days I'm Going to Cut You Into Little Pieces, featuring a rare spoken vocal by Nick, Roger's echoing bass line and Dave's Slide Guitar. The flip side, another 23 minute piece, Echoes, featuring Dave and Rick on vocals, is often regarded as Progressive Rock's finest moment, from the opening ping of Rick's leslie piano. They would also perform both these songs along with earlier classics Live at Pompeii. The Obscured by Clouds soundtrack appeared in 1972 with tracks like Burning Bridges and Childhood's End. However 1973's Dark Side of the Moon would become one of the most successful albums of all time, staying on the charts for nearly 13 years and still a best seller today. Roger's lyrics dealt with the evils of society driving one to madness, while the music was nearly one entire inter-connected piece (making it difficult to separate for a playlist or a best of / greatest hits compilation). Still standouts like Money, Time and Great Gig in the Sky are favorites among fans. Their 1975 followup Wish You Were Here, featuring the opening and closing piece Shine On You Crazy Diamond (a tribute to Syd Barrett who even showed up at the sessions), is thought to be equally great, if not greater, as Dark Side. But tensions between the band were beginning to rear their head. 1977 saw the release of Animals, notable for its famous cover. Roger became the band's main frontman and sole songwriter with Dave occasionally sharing the mic and writing credits. Tensions grew during the tour when Roger ended up spitting on a fan in Montreal and coming up with the idea for The Wall to separate himself from the audience. 1979 would see the release of The Wall, the album and later the tour and film. Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 became their best selling single and Comfortably Numb remains one of their most popular tunes. But it nearly broke up the band as Roger fired Rick for lack of output, creating a greater rift between him and Dave. Recycling unused tracks from The Wall sessions, 1983's The Final Cut was Roger's final album with Pink Floyd. In 1985, Roger officially left the band. Dave and Nick decided to carry on reuniting with Rick for 1987's Momentary Lapse of Reason, produced by Bob Ezrin and featuring songs like Learning to Fly, On the Turning Away, and Sorrow. Roger sued to break up the band, but failed to do so instead focusing on his solo career. A Delicate Sound of Thunder, a live recording from their tour, was released in 1988. The Gilmour led Floyd would produce 1994's The Division Bell, a return to form for many fans with lyricist Polly Samson's debut and featuring the song High Hopes. It wasn't until 2005's Live 8 concert when Dave, Nick and Rick reunited with Roger for a short set giving closure for many fans. Syd never performed with Pink Floyd again and died in 2006. Rick died in 2008. The Endless River was dedicated in his honor in 2014. In the 2010s, David Gilmour released Rattle That Lock and Live at Pompeii in 2015 & 2017 respectively. Roger Waters released Is This the Life We Really Want? and a Redux of Dark Side of the Moon in 2023. Nick Mason would join forces with Guy Pratt, Lee Harris, Gary Kemp and Dom Beken to form the touring band Saucerful of Secrets. In 2020 they released Live at the Roundhouse paying tribute to early Pink Floyd, including material from the Syd Barrett era.

Sorry? You got to meet NICK MASON??? WHAT? That is so cool! Nick Mason's drumming is so wonderful and I love him so much. As a musician who writes all our band's songs, and is unfortunately forced to play some crappy drums, I have come to respect Nick Mason's perfect feel and technique more and more!

My introduction to Gilmour was in fact RATTLE THAT LOCK! So I'm excited to know about it... his producing sensibilities, and the songwriting team is great on it. Favorites tracks are Rattle and Girl in the Yellow Dress! I also enjoyed the REDUX. Grandiose gift to the anniversary, in my opinion, higher than what the PF brand did to celebrate it. For its release I used to listen very EARLY in the morning when it was still dark around, before the sun would rise at its end. Calculating a better atmosphere to listen to it. And I love Nick Mason's band :3c I watched its concerts and saw clips with the band and the chesmistry is palpable.

Roger also released The Lockdown Sessions, a selection of songs used as encores during the tour for Is this the life we really want, and which due to the pandemic, brought about a change in the recording dynamic which influenced the style when it came to the Dark Side of the Moon redux. I really enjoyed The Lockdown Sessions, which I ordered just out of curiosity when I preordered the Redux. Not original songs but I really enjoyed some versions, especially the ones from Final Cut.

I saw Saucerful of Secrets in September last year, was genuinely one of the best shows I've been to. Just magnificent actually hearing those songs live and Nick was in truly top form, and hearing Echoes live, particularly the way they do it, was a bucket list ticker!

Rattle That Lock had so much more rhythmic energy throughout than the lethargic On An Island. Much better album to my ears. Redux was a truly dreadful listen. Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets is really excellent. Love their blu ray.

I agree that Rattle that Lock is more energetic than On an Island. I'm a huge DG fan, and all of his solo album are musically beautiful and emotional. However, I remember being disappointed by how sedate On an Island was when released. It's grown on me since but definitely think Rattle that Lock was an improvement.

I agree with you about Rattle Tgat Lock bring better than the studio version of On An Island for the same reason you mentioned. It's very sedate, but I think that was what he was trying to do. The live version of OAI is far better and more engaging though. Especially the Remember That Night DVD release. It's fantastic. I would rate the live version better than Rattle That Lock, and I'm a fan of the album.

I guess it depends what you prefer. Subjectively, I like that dreamy nature of On An Island. Objectively though, I would say On An Island is a slightly better put together album. Like it has a better defined direction, even if you might not agree with the direction itself. Rattle That Lock seems more like a pop album, with semi-random songs thrown together. Good songs, for sure, but not really tied together all that well.

Nick was supposed to play a show near me in 2021, but when the tour was postponed, that show was one of three that was cut. I really hope he does another show around here sooner or later, as I'm too young to have seen any Pink Floyd or David shows before.

I throw on the redux of dark side whenever I wanna sit back and just reflect on myself, it really helps me think clearly. I especially love the remake of 'Time', it's a standout for me. It's not something you'd listen to casually, which I believe wasn't the intention anyway. I'd say it's similar to The Endless River, how you need to be in the right mindset for it. It's not terrible at all in my opinion, but it's certainty not for a casual pink floyd listener.

Saw Rog in September of 2022 and Mason a month later. Roger's show was alright but the first set clearly had pre-recorded vocals and the entire show had bad vocal mixing- I couldn't hear any of the words to songs I hadn't listened to as much! Not to mention the neutered versions of Bravery of Being out of Range, Comfortably Numb, and the Powers That Be with its goofy video that looked like a CSGO movie. Mason's band was AMAZING! Incredible versions of AHM, Candy and a Currant Bun and See Emily Play with good vocals and strong instrumentals. Rog takes himself too seriously on his live shows.

I've seen Roger and and i don't think I'll ever get to see Gilmour though I'd love to see Nick. Rogers show really was a spectacle with an amazingly accurate sounding band. I do think the fanbase being so divided on sides is so stupid. Od say if you're a fan of floyd and want to see some live Roger or Nock are great options. I had no complaints about rogers show and i was to one of the ones with the political opinions disclaimer. Definitely the best theatrical concert ive ever seen. As far as DSOTM Redux i dont think its amazing but it isnt bad by any means. It is interesting to see an 80yo point of view looking back on his younger self and his younger selfs thoughts.

It’s kinda funny that it would be Nick that has the last laugh. I saw him twice here in Vancouver. That first time was incredible. When a show opens with Interstellar Overdrive you know something is up. Roger and Dave need each other. What’s the saying? The whole doesn’t equal the parts? The parts don’t equal the whole? The whole is equal to the parts? Something like that. 🤔

I feel so conflicted about Roger. On the one hand, his live shows have been spectacular and I'm incredibly grateful that I've been able to experience Pink Floyd's majesty thanks to him. I also think the way he's been misrepresented and vilified in the press is awfully unfair and undeserved. But on the other hand, while I don't necessarily *disagree* with (some of) his opinions, I wish he would just shut up about politics at this point. Nobody cares what an 80-year old rock star whose relevancy on the world stage ended somewhere in the '80s thinks about current-day events, and all it accomplishes is to sully his legacy, to make life difficult for himself, and to sour relations with the people who mattered most to him. Nick has got the right idea: at this point, you should simply celebrate your past accomplishments, be thankful that you're still able to perform, and just *have fun* with it all while it lasts. No need to over-complicate things.

I find Rattle That Lock to be a solid album from start to finish. On An Island is a bit too mellow for my taste, but Rattle That Lock has great variation from one song to the next, and is much more energizing. Surprised you didn't rate Rattle that Lock higher. It's a consistently emotive, and is probably my favorite solo album. Lots of lyrical guitar work but also I appreciate the variety of styles displayed on the album. As for Is This the Life We Really Want, I agree that it's difficult to listen to a whole album with Waters' weary voice, and lot of it sounded like Floyd themes recycled from the 70s. There are some good pieces on there but no enough for me to revisit it much. As for the redux of Dark Side, it sounds like Waters is not even trying to sing rather he is reciting the lyrics as if he's a beat poet and the music is merely a staid background devoid of the dynamics that made the original one of the greatest albums of all time. As someone who once defended him, politically Waters has also lost it. Someone must have taken his marbles away.

I don't think David wants to do music any more. I think everything he does these days is for his family and for himself. Yes I Have Ghosts only exists because it promotes Polly and Romany. Roger... I'm not sure exactly what Roger wants. Maybe he wants to establish himself and THE Pink Floyd. He wants to show everyone that if you want to see Pink Floyd you have to go see him, not David. Or maybe he just likes to play live. Or maybe both. But yeah, Nick is definitely coming up on top. He stayed true to what the band has always been, and it seems to me that he's doing those shows because he genuinely enjoys bringing that music to an audience.

You really have his amazing lyrics but it’s clear that he can’t make the music work without David, as David can’t make his songs work without Roger’s lyrics as well, but to me Roger is becoming some kind of Bob Dylan, with this incredibly long song with little music and a lot of talking To me it proves thar Pink Floyd was far bigger than the sum of its parts

I stand by that Amused To Death is a good album and having Jeff Beck on guitar is the next best thing to David.

@@JTCurtisMusicJeff Beck single handedly saved that album. Without his guitar work, it would have been another mediocre showing from Roger. Like the OP says, Roger needs David's guitar, and David needs Roger's lyrics.

Dark Side Redux was genuinely terrible. I’ve seen court cases with more singing than this album. It’s like if you crossed Dark Side with the worst song off final cut then take it time 10. No question one of, if not the worst thing any member of Pink Floyd has put out, solo or otherwise. Congrats Roger, you managed to top Several Species for the worst thing you’ve released.

@@johnlauracave8169I love Roger’s solo work but the redux is just kinda bad for the most part. It wouldn’t have been as bad if he’d just done one or two songs for another “lockdown sessions” type album. But the entirety of it is pretty bad IMO

Rattle That Lock is a nice album, but not as good as On An Island. I love most tracks from it, but it's not as convincing a package as On An Island. 5am, Beauty, Today, A Boat Lies Waiting are all great songs. Yes I Have Ghosts is a beautiful song. Is This The Life We Really Want is... a dumpster fire. Went through this album once, only liked Picture That, and threw it in my digital dumpster. It used to be that Roger set lyrics and a bit of activism on to music. But this album was politics all throughout, with a bit of music on top. Not to mention that he's a bit hypocritical, seeing as he claims to be anti war but also demonizing the only anti war president in over seven decades. I admit that I didn't bother with DSotM Redux. The original is still good. Don't need a new one. And while I applaud Nick Mason's show and I like how it's bringing back the classics. I admit, it's not my cuppa, but I definitely appreciate it. To be honest, this is what Pink Floyd should still be doing.

Roger's politics are on point; his recent recordings, not so much. the Gaza War is about a CANAL b.t.w. and 30+ years of Apartheid? Moses would NOT approve..

Roger's politics are backwards. Not only is he claiming to be anti war while also demonizing the only anti war US president in over 70 years, but he fails to see what on Earth is actually happening in Israel, as do a lot of people. How you can call it an apartheid is beyond me. You do know that there's Palestinians in Israel's government, right? Elected, and serving in an official capacity in the government. How is that an apartheid?

Just like other bands such as queen or the who, pink floyd could never work out the band was greater than its sum of parts. Solo output from all those band members is/was awful.
