A lot to cover in this video, including Pink Floyd's reunion with Roger Waters at Live 8 in 2005. Also discussing David Gilmour's 2006 album On an Island and the tour, which featured Richard Wright, the death of Syd Barrett which led to another partial reunion for the Madcap's Last Laugh tribute, the untimely passing of Richard Wright in 2008, and reunions between David Gilmour and Roger Waters, including a guest appearance on Roger's The Wall tour in 2011 with Nick Mason as well. So why didn't Live 8 lead to a full tour?
#pinkfloyd #reunion #rogerwaters #davidgilmour #live8 #liveaid #richardwright #nickmason #Sydbarrett #tribute
Phew! There was a lot to cover here. By 2005, Pink Floyd was known world over as one of the greatest classic rock bands in history. Their discography included: Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Saucerful of Secrets, More, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Obscured by Clouds, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall. After release of The Final Cut, Bassist / Writer / Singer Roger Waters had left the group in 1985 and sued the band to prevent them from using the name, unsuccessfully. Now under guitarist / singer David Gilmour’s leadership, he, drummer Nick Mason and later keyboardist / singer Richard Wright released the albums Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell, both supported by successful tours. Pink Floyd went on indefinite hiatus in 1994 and remained inactive for a decade. No one expected them to reunite, especially with Roger, but Bob Geldof managed to bring them together to perform at the 20th anniversary of Live Aid called Live 8 character concert (in connection to the G8 summit to “Make poverty history”.) On July 2nd, 2005, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Rick Wright AND Roger Waters appeared on the London stage to perform “Speak to Me,” “Breathe,” “Money,” “Wish You Were Here” and “Comfortably Numb.” The concert was an enormous success and this would be the last time all four classic members would share the stage together. Rumours circulated for the next few years about a tour, but instead David Gilmour and Roger Waters toured as solo artists, Dave supporting his first solo album in 20 years, On An Island. Rick joined his band, along with Floyd touring bassist Guy Pratt, keyboardist Jon Carin and saxophonist Dick Parry. Nick Mason also sat in for a show at the Royal Albert Hall, along with David Crosby, Graham Nash and David Bowie. Roger toured a full performance on Dark Side of the Moon. A major loss occurred on July 7th 2006 when Syd Barrett, the band’s original frontman and writer of early singles such as “Arnold Layne” and “See Emily Play”, passed away from pancreatic cancer. A tribute concert, Madcap’s Last Laugh, was held in his honor on May 10th, 2007. Roger Waters would perform a solo song while Dave, Rick and Nick performed “Arnold Layne” with Jon Carin and bassist Andy Bell. Sadly this would be Pink Floyd’s last performance as Richard Wright died of lung cancer on September 15th 2008. For David Gilmour, this was the end of Pink Floyd, but he did reunite with Roger twice, including a guest performance of “Comfortably Numb” on Roger’s tour of The Wall from 2010 - 2013, documented in his film.

Their coverage was shit all day. More interested in broadcasting interviews and commercials than any of the 9 concerts (there was a second semi-official UK concert at the Eden Project in Cornwall) and also showing exactly the same coverage on both MTV and VH1.

Yes! I remember a similar description for the Beatles. Still, I find it quite appropriate for Floyd as well! After The Wall, there was nothing left for them to do as a group! While I don’t really blame Roger, he just went off into a different area! I would have lost all respect for the rest of the band if they had agreed to follow him as the “supporting” band! That was the “Final Cut”, which was not a bad album, but not at all a Floyd project, it was Roger’s album, with Floyd backing him up.

Reportedly in the line up of Live 8, Pink Floyd werent even announced properly by Bob or another presenter. Paul McCartney and Wings had just finished playing, and with the audience still applauding for them, thats when Pink Floyd slipped in. Magical. Thank you for this video JT, I truly loved it.

Actually The Who performed before Floyd. Pink Floyd however were the only London act not to be announced by an onstage emcee. If I remember rightly they were showing Roxy Music playing in Berlin on the big screens only for them to fade out and Speak To Me fade in over the PA, after which the band kick in playing Breathe while the screens show footage of the Animals pig soaring over Battersea power station, the video screens not showing the band until the vocals begin.

@@UranusMcVitieFish-yd7oq Yeah, I remember people already streaming for the exits to get their trains after The Who as had already gone 11pm... their loss was my gain as I got closer to the stage. I ran like the wind to leave as Macca was playing and only just got my last train. Still one of my favorite festival type shows (only took me a few texts to "win" tickets too) - Travis, REM, Robbie Williams were good, The Who especially, I remember the audience trolling Mariah Carey when she came on with some African kids. Missed U2 and Coldplay because there were hold ups at the gates, but the crowd were good humored. Was there for the Floyd and was not disappointed. Great day!

While watching this video all the way through, I just couldn’t stop thinking about Rick. He’s such a special member to me, and in my opinion, brings the soul to the band, and encapsulating so many things I love about Pink Floyd, not to discredit the other members of course. Hell, I even love hearing his voice on songs like “Summer 68”, “Wearing The Inside Out”, “Remember A Day” and “Stay”.. I wish I could’ve heard more of his singing on Pink Floyd. I was at the Live 8 concert in 2005. I stood on my feet for sixteen hours so I could see PF. They were more than an hour late and by then my back was agony. I even told my wife I was thinking of leaving. But I'm glad I stayed. I couldn't have lived with myself if I had left. It was the greatest 24 minutes of my life. As soon as Floyd finished we started to leave, we didn't stop for Paul McCartney, although we saw some of it on the video screens. I feel privileged to have been there. x

Honestly id say David didn't want to perform with Roger he usually seems against the idea but not always... Unfortunately. I love Roger and David. The way i see it if you want to get the theatrical side of Pink Floyd including the effects go see Roger. Ive been on his most recent 2 tours and it was actually amazing musically and visually with a phenomenal band! Id love to see David live 100% but he doesn't tour as often! Pink Floyd's biggest weakness is the fans... They take the arguments between the 2 musicians and blow it up bigger than it needs to be. Go into any comment section on the Pink Floyd page and its probably one of the top 10 comments trashing Roger or David... It also sucks because it takes away from all of their talent. Say what you want about Roger, hes an amazing songwriter and bass player. David one of the best guitarists of all time with an amazing lullaby soothing voice. Nick is the most steady drummer who knows when to lay back and chill on a beat but can be a monster! Richard is one of the best keyboardists ever... Period. Syd was a visionary its too bad mental health issues, drugs and fame got to him. They all were great that's what made the band so amazing.

Gosh, thank you so much for this video. I’ve just subscribed! - (and thanks RU-vid Algorhythm for putting this in my feed.) I have been a fan since about 1968 and this is one of the best videos I’ve seen about the band. Your research is very impressive and I look forward to looking at your other videos. I was lucky to see all four of them a lot in the 70s, although at a couple of concerts I’m not quite sure what happened - but that’s the 1970s! I was also lucky enough to see the original version of The Wall at Earls Court and it was freaking awesome and also Roger Waters version at the O2 which was really impressive. I was watching Live 8 and I didn’t know they were on the list of bands. My head nearly exploded and then my daughter rang me and said ‘are you watching the TV dad? ‘ It was brilliant. If you compare solo albums, please don't forget Syd's. In addition to the two standard ones, there's one called The Radio One Sessions that, while at points is poor in sound quality, is IMO rightfully a studio album (Obviously Syd didn't perform live on radio). Given that it combines material from both his standard solo albums, you could in fact just include that one in your comparison. It's stellar. Took no "acquiring" stage for it to suit my taste. It gives it more integrity just to be a one-off performance for a specific cause, so it's probably a good thing they didn't drag their personal animosity out on the road. OK, we had a sort of get together. Roger seems to projecting an image which says "Yes, folks, its me.. I'm back". At the end poor old Rick looks doubly ill at ease. Well, its a swan song, for a good cause. We fondly remember them in their prime. 😊 😮

When Nick revs up into the second guitar break on Money that was the moment Floyd proved nothing else could touch them at their peak, I practically melted. To think we have been deprived of THIS for 30+ years because of Roger's @#*"@g ego is enough to make me weep.

When Live 8 was due, I had to go to a baseball game, with my Brother, and my Dad in Cincinnati, the Reds. I had two tv’s and two VCR in different rooms. July 2005. (My brother recorded 3/4 of Live Aid). Each vcr could do 4hrs. Got back from baseball,…and, I was really annoyed how many of the performances were talked over by some “personality” or edited by commercial. I think only 5 mins of Pink Floyd was broadcast. So, when the dvd box of Live 8 was released, in 2006, bought it. There are only a few segments that I watch over again -and, mostly P.Floyd. (Buying the dvd set, money went to charity; unlike these copies online).

I think that Gilmour said that we were offered insane amounts of money to tour again and make an album but I am personally not interested in doing this. And Waters is pretty much feeling the same. And I have huge respect for them for not selling out and for being true to what they want to do even if it means that they will miss out on making more money and be in the spotlight. And they don't really need the money now, do they?

I want to believe that Bob Geldof, Pratt and Mason would do everything to stick David and Roger together on the same room. Even doing the impossible, calling out, or making it to be inevitable. "No more excuses!"

As much as we all know it won't happen, I wouldn't have a problem with Jon Carin sitting in for Rick on a farewell tour. He was effectively a member of Pink Floyd during the Momentary Lapse/Division Bell era, co-writing Learning to Fly. He played alongside Rick both in Pink Floyd and in David's touring band and played Rick's role in Roger's touring band. He's the only person on Earth who could conceivably take Rick's place.

He was definitely the best to stand in for Rick on David and Roger's solo tours.

@@JTCurtisMusic Definitely not going to happen now, as Carin fell out with Gilmour on his last tour. It's a shame to see that musical relationship end.

Live in Gdańsk made me love the songs from on an island, my favorite solo to date, but I think I like more songs from pros and cons and radio kaos and amused to death then about face and David Gilmour album, there is no doubt their best music is made with all of them together David’s music needs that little bit of Roger’s craziness and Roger needs David’s mellowing, I also like more tracks from rattle that lock and I only liked about 2 tracks from is this the life we really want

As I read it," Roger's use of "roll over" is a euphemism for "not be the one in charge." As you rightfully point out, Roger's value was mainly behind the scenes. He was more replaceable in concert than he realized. Contrary to Roger's misguided evaluation, David was in fact the one in the power position.

Why they never toured? They stretched all their limits to do this one performance! I applaud them for that. But after all the insults, Gilmour didn’t want anything to do with Waters! There were a few collaborations, (mainly for charity), but then then the same old issues pushed them apart again!

I remember hoping for a reunion or at least solo albums and liking at least one song from RW and a couple 2 or 3 from DG. It was so long ago ii only remember Learning to fly by DG but the title Momentarily lapse of reason seems to be indicating some regret and seems to have a lot if meaning. Like an almost unspoken or unapologetic apology. So close but no cigar. Back then i would have said come on Mr. Pink Floyd have a cigar and work it out together.

I did talk about it in the extended cut - it's more an extension of David's tour with an orchestra, but a great performance nonetheless.

It's not odd that Roger sings the second verse on that one song because, as on the original recording, the whole damn song was Roger, and Dave even said it in an interview with Guitar World magazine.
