I lay on the roof of my house in the north of Scotland and looked at the stars, listening to this on my cheap record player shortly after it came out. I was 14. I'm 59. It feels just as fresh.

When my friend "Diamond Dave" passed away many years ago, his parents arranged to have this song played at the end of the funeral service. Those first five minutes blasting from the church as we gathered to move him to the cemetery is one of the most 'connected' moments of humanity that I've experienced. The music definitely helped me get through a crushing moment in time. Over time, the sadness of the day faded into memory, but the human connection felt remains to this day.

Imagine how we felt back in the 1970s when there were zero distractions like DVD players computers cell phones video game none of that stuff most of us had TVs with four or five channels at the most and a record player. Then out of the blue this kind of music comes along! I think you'll find Pink Floyd an almost bottomless rabbit hole. And the mechanical noises you heard at the end of that was the music transitioning into the next song "welcome to the machine". Just sit back and enjoy and you don't have to Bob your head to Pink Floyd because if you watch a concert with them you'll see very few people moving, most of the audience is usually mesmerised. Like I said earlier with Pink Floyd just listen and enjoy!

Pink Floyd can become overwhelming and a little terrifying. Sit back, smoke a reefer while listening to Pink Floyd and while it's kicking in, Think of eternity and how the Universe has no beginning and no end. I swear the number of times I felt as though I was leaving my body and never coming back is crazy. I refer to it as Transition music. The emotions Pink Floyd evokes is how you might feel at the end of your life's journey, as you pass from this world into the next.

Pink Floyd is a master of sparsity. Each note is given time to develop, each instrument is given room to extend to the fullest. Loud is given the silence in between, only in contrast to silence loud is REALLY loud. That is an art in itself. (note to loud: that is even physiological. When you listen to something that has constantly the same noise level, your noise perception diminishes. It will recover in a few hours or days to the original level, but if not given time, it may permanently cause hearing loss.)

For those who appreciate their music, time has no meaning when listening to Floyd. Their song "Echoes" (studio version) is nearly 24 minutes and you'll probably be wondering where the time went on that one as well. That rumbling you heard there at the end of this one was going into "Welcome to the Machine" .. next track on this Wish You Were Here album. Might want to check that out next, or the title track, "Wish You Were Here".

@@peterwright5249 It depends. I have studied classical guitar with well known teachers since I was 11 years old. All of them liked also Rock music, none of them liked Pink Floyd (Pink Floyd is my favorite rockband, by the way). My last teacher, who is one of the greatest guitar players ever, hated them. I have won many schollarships and studied in Chile, USA and Germany. I have always been around classical musicians, jazz musicians and songwriters. Only a few of them shared my love for Pink Floyd. A lot of them professional guitarists didn't like Pink Floyd because of Gilmour's playing, which I can totally understand, since some of his solos are so incredible obvious and uncreative that you could totally fall sleep. I don't think Gilmour is bad, I just think he is overrated and I think most of my collegues would agree. Pink Floyd is interesting because of Barrett and Waters songwriting and none of them could play instruments very well, only Gilmour, but he wasn't a virtuoso either. He couldn't even play Money without changing the time signature. This is me by the way, playing the Aranjuez concert with an orchestra in Germany., just so you know that I am not just making shit up.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gVq8D7mavB4.html

The album is part a critique of the music industry & a lament for their former band mate, Syd Barrett who left in 1968. Amazingly, when they were recording this in 1975, Syd turned up randomly at the studio. Wish You Were Here is just stunning. Like Floyd albums of the 70's, you need to listen to the whole album as it all flows together.
