As your first listen to this was life-changing, I recommend that you both listen to 'Echoes', on their album, 'Meddle'. I can guarantee you'll find that even more life-changing than this. 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' is wonderful, but 'Echoes' is utterly sublime, being probably Pink Floyd's greatest ever extended piece and almost certainly one of the greatest pieces of music ever made by anyone.

There is no doubt that Pink Floyd were musical geniuses. David Glimour is a master of making you feel so many emotions simply by playing his guitar. It's a real shame that they are no longer playing together anymore. The day I heard that they were breaking up the band, it broke my heart. They are truly timeless. This band started in 1965, and they are still a very popular band. They were so far ahead of their time when they started. I was fortunate enough to have gone to several of their concerts. They always put on a great show, and the music was phenomenal. My favorite concert by them was Pulse. The solo for Comfortably Numb was deemed the best guitar solo of all time. That in itself is a powerful statement, since there are so many great guitarists out there. So many of their songs are simply described as MASTERPIECES.

Pink Floyd was so far ahead of anybody doing experimental music you said you heard something at the very end well, that was the beginning of the next song they usually interlude together that's why when we usually listen to a Pink Floyd song we start from the beginning and listen through the entire album very humbling and for me religious experience. David gilmour's guitar playing is just so easy listening to like a child listening to a lullaby that's how it is to me anyway. You need to do some research on David gilmour's personal life he's an amazing human being auctioning off all this famous guitar collection and donating it to his charities he sold one of his mansions and donated that to charities. His interviews are As relaxing as listening to his guitar music always very soft-spoken and polite. You just can't run out of good things to say about him

David Gilmour's bends and vibrato are really something special. The parts of Pink Floyd are individually great and somehow the whole is much greater than the sum of those parts. Now to close my eyes and go with it.

And he's phrasing in general. It might be blessing to us that he isn't super fast player, so he chooses the great notes and plays them with feeling. He's playing has dynamics and great phrasing and he's a master of bends and vibrato. Gilmour is a good player to try to learn bending. He does lots of bends where in single bend he bends to one note then bends higher and then lower. That's kind of hard to do if you aren't used to it.

I bought Wish you were here the day I turned 17 in 1975. That very night I won my first painting prize. This album kicked off my art career which is flourishing today. This song is the anthem to that day and the 'purple chord' by Dave Gilmore [at 4:20sec.] hit me like a bolt of lightning and still today makes my hair stand on end with it's tragic beauty condensed into one note. Thank you for posting this epic song and giving me once again, a glimpse from the abyss into the light.

I was in my mid 30’s when I first place the intro part of this song for my Dad. He absolutely loved it. He could not believe it was Pink Floyd. Years later when he passed away, I was sitting in my car waiting for the funeral to start and I played this song. It didn’t ease the lose of my dad, but as long as I live it will be a song I can play and feel the memory of my dad.

You are correct again. It is a song of longing and goodbye. The lyrics, as you guessed, are about original lead singer/guitarist, Syd Barrett, who had left the band some years earlier due to a complete mental breakdown. Not only this song, but Hey You, Wish You Were Here, Brain Damage.......and, well really, half of the album The Wall. Roger Waters lyrics are his celebration of him (as well as a warning to others), just as the music is a mournful farewell.

@@BrianR. Well, you're an angry little creature. I guess Syd Barret's sister should have asked you about her brother's diagnosis and Roger Waters was "just making shit up" when he discussed The Wall on the commentary track, if only you had been there to inform me. Apparently, spewing venom and making baseless comments without even attempting to back them up, DOES make it true. You really don't need to respond to me or anyone else, an echo chamber is all you require.

The music of Pink Floyd calms you. Then Gilmour sets your emotions. Then the vocals come on and gives you a message. Nobody ever did it better. Nobody else ever will. It's to mant levels for anyone else .

Syd Barrett actually turned up out of the blue at the studio when this album was recorded in 1975, an album mainly dedicated to him. I hope you both do Echoes !.

CaptainNemo1701 when he showed up Syd looked so bad/different that they didn’t know who he was. He had shaved his eyebrows off and had gained a lot of weight and really out of it. Shine On You Crazy Diamond was inspired by Syd’s name, it’s a play on it.

Minds prone toward complexity of thought and emotion will seek out complexity, such as can be found in music and ultimately Pink Floyd. Layers, different tempos, various instruments, rock/r&B,/jazz/gospel/new wave/progressive rock fused into a unique sound. Sound effects, infused oratory, staggered and overlapping warm and edgy vocals, with each player seemingly afforded the freedom of spontaneity to shine while at the same time playing within and adding to a greater theme. Roger Waters grasps big picture and its interconnected parts. He's a teacher conveying messages,, to include societal warnings, through music. Conceiving, organizing, and simplify such chaos evidences genius.

Simply put the best band in the history of music. And i was lucky enough to see them live twice. I fell love with this album when i was 13 years old (43 years ago). And the obsession started by instrumental part played a opening tune of a television program. I knew i had heared it before but for weeks i could not figure out where. While listening to it again it suddenly clicked. This is Pink Floyd and knew exactly which album it was on. I ran to my older sister (who had the album and that was where i knew it from) and asked to lend her record to me. I played that tune 10 to 20 times in a row and at some point i just let the record play on and thought hey this part is pretty cool aswell. So i played the whole record and i was sold on them. BTW talking about an intro of 9 minutes, unbelievable.

There will never be another band like Pink floyd! They are just as relevant now as they were back then! My favorite band of all time and my favorite musician of all time in David Gilmour! That warm voice and that beautiful guitar work. When you guys get the chance you should react to "dogs" by them! Beyond epic guitar solos! By the way I dont know if you know but the higher pitched voice you hear on occasion is Roger Waters the bass player

I went to the Pink Floyd tribute concert last night, in Tulsa Ok (Brit Floyd) and they played this song with that video (basically) and full laser and light show. Absolutely amazing. Over 3 hours of perfectly performed Pink Floyd. 3 beautiful harmonious ladies and 7 musicians. Wow.

You are correct about this being about the original frontman Syd Barrett, it’s from the Wish You Were Here album. The song Wish You Were Here is also partly inspired by Syd Barrett, David Gilmour has said he can’t sing Wish You Were Here without thinking of Syd. But it is more broad and can represent anybody that you miss. But Shine On You Crazy Diamond was written specifically about Syd. There’s a story about when they were recording this song, Syd Barrett actually came to their studio session. It had been some years since the last time they saw Syd, and when he showed up to their studio session that day, they didn’t recognize him at first. He had gained a lot of weight and he had no hair and no eyebrows. So they didn’t even know it was him at first. They said David Gilmour and Roger Waters cried when they realized it was Syd. Very, very sad story what happened with him. One thing I also want to mention is that you commented in this video that this might have been the song that took the longest to record, but they have other long songs that I think may have taken longer. Their song “Echoes” is 23 minutes long and their song “Atom Heart Mother Suite” is 24 minutes. Echoes is one of their most renowned songs, and it’s considered the precursor to the Dark Side Of The Moon album. So because of that I hope to see you react to that song some day. The middle of the song is kinda spooky or eerie, but it’s still a heavy experience.

Syd Barrett - whom this song is about - was an extremely talented songwriter and musician and was the leader of this band. I urge you to check out Floyd's first album, "Piper At the Gates of Dawn" which was written almost entirely by Syd. It is a lot different sounding than Floyd's more well known later material, though there are some similarities. The great David Gilmour was not yet in the group, joining them when Syd was no longer functional as a performer or songwriter, essentially 'replacing' him - though Syd himself really was irreplaceable, being the lone songwriter in the group until then. But Gilmour brought a lot to the table himself and he and Waters grew as songwriters and gave us the Pink Floyd we all love and admire today. This song btw is probably my favorite Floyd tune - I bought this album when it was first released and still listen to it from time to time 40 plus years later and it never fails to move me.

This song is a dedicated to Syd Barret, their former bandmate and chief founder of the band who later became a casualty to psychedelics and mental illness. Secondly, this is just the half of the song. There are as many parts to this song and the full song has a lenght of around 24 mins.

Pink Floyd's tribute to their founder Syd Barrett (look at the initials: Shine on You crazy Diamond = SYD). The entire Wish You Were Here album is about him, as well as part of the Wall album, and the song Brain Damage. Syd wasn't able to cope with the pressure of the music industry, he had mental problems and ultimately had to leave the album after a drug overdose ruined his brain. The 5 parts are as follows: Part 1 (01:04) : Rick's mesmerising synth intro, followed by David's guitar Part 2 (04:45) : David's iconic 4-note theme Part 3 (07:18) : Rick's minimoog solo, followed by David's bluesy guitar solo Part 4 (09:33) : Roger's vocals + backing vocals by David & Rick Part 5 (11:59) : Dick Parry's sax solo The sound you hear at the end is the intro to the next song on the album, Welcome To The Machine. IMO parts 6-9 are even better. The song became the regular opener on their concerts. There are lots of fantastic live versions, each one of them unique. Definitely check out the Pulse version, as well as the versions on David Gilmour's tours, like Live in Gdansk 2006, Remember That Night 2006, and the Royal Festival Hall 2001.

@@Pulsar77 yes! He met that guy on the street - he was a street performer! Dave and his wife just came across him taking a walk in the town earlier that day. Dave was so enchanted by the sound that on a lark he asked him if he'd like to do that on stage tonight. I don't think the poor guy had any idea what he was getting into LOL. (The video of the meeting is on RU-vid somewhere)

Roger Waters's name gets buried beneath all the 'Gilmour" comments. And while we Waters fans certainly love Gilmour, Waters was the mastermind behind Pink Floyd from Dark Side of the Moon, until the bitter fallout around 1985. Waters wanted to call it a day, the other 3 wanted to keep making money. The rest is history.

@@mickeygoh25 I base my opinion on an article I read in Billboard Magazine (if I remember correctly), where Gilmour referred to Pink Floyd as 'his job'. Understanding art, and more importantly, the 'artists' who create it, I had no choice but to side 'Waters camp' on this, especially considering just how important Waters's leadership was at that critical phase. And to this day, the band and its fanbase are divided along lines that very much echo those of the political divide sweeping the entire globe. Now, when I say I 'sided' with Waters does not mean I do not respect the other band members and their opinions. But if you watch carefully, you'll see that there is almost a persecution of Waters, and a promotion to Sainthood of David Gilmour. This is POLITICAL and is rooted in Waters's challenges of the system, including the system that distributed Pink Floyd music and merchandise. It is a very lonely road for any person to take (because most people side with power at the end of the day). I DO believe something huge was lost when the band chose to carry on despite Waters' protests (not unlike what was lost when Syd Barrett left). And while I am grateful I got to see Pink Floyd 3 times as a result of that (and enjoyed every second of every show,)I would gladly have sacrificed those memories to have seen Pink Floyd end on a high note (in the way The Beatles did).

Finally someone who thinks like myself, after al it's easy to check Roger Waters work after PF and what the guys did without Roger, they became a great rock band, Roger retained the lyrics and all the meaning that made them great, i trully wish they never separated but Roger's body of work it shows who was the spirit of the band!

@@nunomuacho446 Great point, Nuno. The 2 most important ingredients in Floyd, went their separate ways... and neither was ever the same without the other! And I would say Waters was the 'visionary' aspect of the band; the 'Yin' (feminine even) aspect; the mysterious part that is often hard to pin down. YES... there is somebody else in here, who feels the way you do!

@@TheSimonScowl exactly, the only thing i may have against Waters, from what i've been seeing in documentaries, is the lack of acknowledgement of the utmost importance of Richard Right in all atmosphere of the PF sound, Gilmour would not sound so bright without the work of Right answering to his leads

6-9 is my favorite, but this is a masterpiece nonetheless, it fuses blues, rock, psychedelic and the lyrics are heartbreaking when you see the context of some of them.

you think that`s a synth don`t you, thats a wine glass organ, they put liquid into glasses at different levels ran their fingers over the top to create a sound, and recorded every note on a keyboard, then used the deck faders to create chords, that`s what you hear, very smart indeed lol, glad you liked it, one of the greates tracks from the greatest album ever made....

This is a masterpiece! With this song, Pink Floyd follows the beginnings of their era, when they recorded psychydelic melodies, pioneered by Syd Barrett - a founding member of the group. He was an extremely talented musician who unfortunately ended up using excessive LSD. His departure was (and I think it is) a trauma for others and they never really dealt with it. This composition was dedicated to Syd Barrett, in his honor. If you know this, the text makes more sense... After each, it impresses me again and again ...

I find the animation that comes with this video an irrelevance and an annoyance. The pictures you make in your own head are always better than those given to you by someone else. By the way, there is a very good version of this song on You Tube performed live at Knebworth, which no one seems to review.

My 2 and a half year old daughter would ask me to play this in my killer car stereo when I’d come home from work. We’d go for a ride, but during the intro she would get impatient and say , “ta ta ta ta daddy! Ta ta ta ta!”

Another great reaction and very honest and intelligent, thank you. Only my opinion but I always feel watching the film with the track is very distracting, this should always be heard with a glass of wine, headphones, darkened room, eyes closed...perfect.

"C'mon you seer of visions". I believe Syd suffered from synesthesia where people hear colors,feel sounds and taste shapes. Some cannot leave the house due to the overload and explains why their music is unlike any other and makes people emotional
