I am thankful for the support this video has brought to my channel, so I might as well say some things. Thank you to everyone who has watched or is seeing this video, I'm glad that people are enjoying my dumb little amateur passion projects. I also want to say that yes, I got some of the lyrics wrong, sorry! Most of this is me, I sometimes just wasn't bothered looking up lyrics since I felt I knew the songs well enough. However I suppose like many things, you really don't! But you know what, the lyric "color and chain" from dogs just doesn't seem as cool as "collar and chain" although I guess that's the same thing. Oh well, my bad! Also thanks to those who corrected some other research mistakes I made, to clarify, Amy Whitehouse was not a politician. She was basically just a British Karen complaining about media being too violent/profane for children. She never mattered in the grand scheme of things, and yet she is memorialized forever in Pigs which is a funny and fitting thing to define her legacy for. And also if you're wondering what happened with Syd Barrett since I never gave the aftermath of Pink Floyd and where they all went. Syd simply disappeared into private life, unfortunately he was still well known enough to be spotted a few times and have sneaky photographs taken of him, one of which I used at the end. I was a bit torn with using that picture, given its unethical nature. But given that there wasn't much of Syd to go off after he disappeared into private life, I felt it was a good way of showing that while he did crash and burn in tragic fashion, he did eventually recover and was able to have a stable life. Syd spent most of his time out of the limelight making paintings and with his family, which given how many rockstars ended up dead or forever tainted by their past, I guess personally I would say he led a fulfilling life, and I am glad he was able for the most part to enjoy it despite what he struggled with. Now there is also some confusion regarding Syd and how he became so reclusive, and much of it is attributed to apparent schizophrenia. Roger has alluded or almost outright stated Syd had schizophrenia, and the drugs worsened it. David Gilmour has also agreed with this sentiment. Unfortunately there isn't much information about his history with mental illness, the guy after all lived a very private and secluded life. But whatever the case, it is somewhat clear there was likely something that the band members did not know about before, and that when Syd started using drugs, his illness only became even worse. That's pretty much all I have to say, again, thank you for watching, and I hope you guys subscribe and stick around... although I have been quite busy, and don't really have the passion for making videos currently. But if I do return, I hope you'll be there to watch. ~ Z01nk

The Wall is an album that I have never understood as to it`s attraction to so many people. It is a long dark descent down to depressing, moping and whining hell. It just leaves the listener trapped in a morose place and mood. There is no release, no levity. Music needs tension and release or light and shade. This is why I listened to heavy metal during the 80`s and 90`s. You might be in a bad mood or have had a break-up with your girlfriend, so you pop a Megadeth, Iron Maiden , etc in the stereo and by the time a couple songs have passed you feel the mood lift and you once again feel like yourself. A happy man.

It should be the Big Five. Meddle should be the 5th album included in your video. It contains Echoes, One Of These Days and Fearless, each brilliant in its own way. Echoes (a 23 minute composition) in particular was recognized by the band members as the song which really set them on their way.

I love Meddle too, in fact I listened to it today. But culturally these four albums are what make Pink Floyd... well... Pink Floyd. They have the most influence, the most acclaim. And while I love Meddle... it isn't perfect unlike these four. However I do not doubt the fact it has incredible songs... but it helped to demonstrate their potential before they began releasing these four giants.

Thank you for making this video. I completely agree, their music-particularly the music in the big four, will live on forever as the epitome of masterful music. They consistently wrote music about the human condition, in many of its forms, making those of us who can relate feel less alone, seen and understood. And they did that with some of the most poignant, poetic and brilliant lyrics from Roger-with David-the best guitarist who ever existed and the talents of Nick and Rick. Their music makes you feel a gamut of emotions and feelings-sadness, anger, peaceful, thoughtful, insightful, motivated and so on. The Wall has many similarities to Roger's life specifically, yet so many of us can relate to various aspects of the songs with each of our own personal histories. Feeling lonely, feeling unseen, feeling abandoned, feeling afraid, feeling betrayed, reexperiencing traumatic events, feeling different and unwanted. Of course it's dark. Those are difficult and painful experiences. But The Wall also contains some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard. As painful as those feelings are, The Wall as always made me feel a sense of support as it beautifully describes things I've felt in a way that I never could. It's why The Wall is my favorite album of all time. DSOTM, WYWH, Animals and Meddle are my second favorite albums, lol. I just can't break them down any further than that. PF is the best band in the world, the best band that ever was. Thank you again for taking the time to create this video!

Good job! Not sure if you mentioned this, but all 4 start and end with the same song or sounds. When I was about 13, this freaked me out. It works best with LP’s. Start with side 2 then flip the album and its a continuous cycle. For The Wall load your record player with side 4 and then side 1. When side 1 drops you get the effect. Anyway. Best wishes!

Because it’s basically a Waters solo record performed by Pink Floyd as it says on the LP itself. I like many tracks on TFC but it doesn’t feel like Floyd working together compared to the others. Even The Wall whilst led completely by Waters still has a lot of Dave if not Rick. Rick isn’t even on TFC. Dave sings on part of only 1 track, which is also uncommon for a Floyd album.

Thanks for the great work on this video. I’m feeling a little validated reading through the comments and seeing lots of others who seem to agree the Wall was perhaps the worst PF album. I’ve been a fan for about 30 years and even got my first online username (Pinkben) from their name back in the AOL days. I tend to forget how influential this music was on my early musical sensibilities. A few years ago I went to an eclipse party and Darkside was played. It’s one of the few albums I can think of that sounds as fresh the first time I heard it 30 years later. I’d put Radiohead’s Kid A in the same category. In fact, if Pink Floyd owned the 70s, I’d say Radiohead owned the late 90s and early 00s in the same way. Music that gets deeper and deeper the more you explore - while still having commercial appeal. Anyway, thanks for bringing me back to exploring 🙏🏼

I’ve got all of Pink Floyd’s albums. I’ve got their live albums and several compilations. I’ve loved this band from way back in 1973. Personally, I’d remove The Wall from this list. It’s very over rated and it inappropriately lives off a reputation that was forged in steel, over the previous three albums. Then, having removed The Wall, I’d add in Meddle and The Division Bell. Now, it’s better. It’s a list that is more rounded and complete. This is The Big Five!

Excellent expository and analysis. Wholly agree on The Big Four. We would all prob also say that Meddle was the incubator of/for and prelude into Dark Side and might be included - though I don’t think it offers the same sort of story. It’s just one of The Epics. For me, Dark Side and Animals are just the definition of Ageless, Eternal, Galactic Epic. I honestly can’t think of any 2(ok, 4) other albums by any other artist ever that compare in any attribute. Nothing else takes you on such journeys.

It is precisely thanks to their contrasts and their different views and sensibilities that the pinnacle of Dark Side and the others was reached. If they had gotten along Waters probably would have had an easy time getting everything he wanted and the result would have been the new Redux... Redux is the example of how Waters imagined Dark Side and I would say it would never have been what it was.

A good thoughtful essay with one big mistake which caters to the Pink Floyd myth regardless of the reality. You say "Roger and David continued to support Syd with royalties..." The reality of course is that he continued to earn, regardless of any efforts on their part, royalties to which he was legally entitled! Another reality check on the Floyd myth is the question - if Syd showed up at the Whish You Were Here session, who invited him? Could that happen without them knowing? Remember that the recording studio was not open to the public.

A lot of people mentioning Meddle should have been included. I do believe it was a great album, but I believe it's still part of their experimenting and honing of their skills era. These 4 albums are absolute perfection and use every bit of their acquired skills to make a coercive album that all songs flow perfectly through. All 4 members were at the top of their game, and contributed their best abilities to make songs that would last the test of time. Even with Roger taking more control, like a conductor of an orchestra, and the others losing some interest, especially Rick, because of it, they were all able to contribute to make 4 of the best albums ever produced. These 4 albums have to be in everyone's top 100 albums of all time.

Very nice video, but a couple of points, if I may, on your Wish You Were Here section (since it is my favorite Pink Floyd album): 1) the lyrics you post for the last verse is wrong. You wrote 'Come on you butcher' (which was very jarring), when in fact the word is 'boy-child', denoting Syd's playful nature. 2) the four 'notes' that make up the theme for Shine On You Crazy Diamond were played in the studio by David one day while he was 'messing around', and Roger heard them and loved the sound, so the idea began for Syd's tribute song. 3) sadly, you did not address the final tribute to Syd on the album: the last few beautiful notes Richard Wright plays as the song fades are the melody of See Emily Play, the first song they ever recorded as The Pink Floyd, written of course, by Syd. In my book, the best tribute end, ever. 4) Lastly (I promise, although I could go on and on...), the original lineup of songs was supposed to be: side one: Raving and Drooling and Gotta Be Crazy (which became Sheep and Dogs, respectively on the Animals album) and side two was to be Shine On You Crazy Diamond - all three of which they had been playing on tour the year prior. But, when it came time to decide on the next album, Roger felt the three songs did not go together as one cohesive piece, so they discarded the two songs (at Roger's insistence, and David's ire - Mason and Wright were just willing to go along with anything at this point) and they ended up agreeing to build the album around Shine On, and Roger and David wrote three new songs that went with the theme of absence, alienation and the discontentment with the music industry. Finally, when, when it came time to complete and assemble the album, Dave and Roger fought over splitting up Shine On into two parts, but Dave was overruled by group vote, as both Nick and Rick agreed with Roger. Another 'brick in the wall', between Dave and Roger, if you will, even though, throughout the years Dave agrees that it was for the best, and has even stated it is his favorite Pink Floyd album... All information I stated can be found in Nick Mason's great Pink Floyd 'biography' Inside Out - the only first-hand account that we have. Thank you for allowing my 'rant'...

Sadly hindsight is 20/20 and Dave especially will confidently state now that when Roger got his way over certain arguments he was right. However, Roger seems to still disagree with any times Dave got his way or the vote went against Roger.

@@campbellclark2988 Agreed! No dispute there! Roger is not good at giving credit where credit's due. However, he sometimes forgets himself and will give praise for Dave and the others. Those are the interviews you come to cherish, however sparingly.

Personally I would include The Final Cut from 1983. The last Floyd album to feature Roger Waters. Also some great guitar solos from David Gilmour. It’s different, yes, more like Waters’ solo career, yes, but it’s still a unique and classic follow up to The Wall. By the way, his 1992 solo masterpiece, Amused to Death, is on a par with all of these four (or five) masterworks. I do love Meddle but there are a few weak tracks on side 1.

LMAO. "Only Roger cared about making more music.... the others were content to settle down with their money". Only Roger was obsessed with song credit and money, and thus became by far the richest of the band members. While he had lots of conceptual talent, he had very little musical talent. The other band members, especially Dave & Rich, provided the musical talent (while Nick had the amicable personlity that kept the band egos in check). Roger was the richest not because he was the most talented, but because his ego faught the most for credit. I know. I'm about to be blocked. Counter narratives are never allowed.
